What can an Etsy integration automate for you?

An app connected to Etsy can take over listing creation, order handling and tracking. Your shop's settings, policies, buyer conversations and final checks stay with you.

Etsy automation, from the people building it

An app connected to Etsy through the official API can take over the repetitive work: creating and publishing listings, bulk edits, pulling in orders, passing them to a production partner and posting tracking numbers back to Etsy. Opening the shop, setting policies, talking to buyers and deciding what to sell always stay with you.

This is for sellers who are new to Etsy, have seen "Etsy integration" on a tool's website and want to know what they would actually be handing over. If you sell print on demand, the time spent per listing and the step of passing every order to production are the most repetitive parts of the job. Knowing what can be automated, and what should not be, helps you pick the right tool and keep your shop safe.

What an Etsy integration is, and how it connects

An Etsy integration is an app that connects to your shop through Etsy's official API. The connection uses OAuth: the app sends you to Etsy's own sign-in screen, you see which permissions you are granting and you approve them there. Your Etsy password is never given to the app, and you can revoke access from Etsy at any time.

Before you connect anything, check three things: whether it uses the official Etsy API, which permissions it asks for, and how you disconnect it. The permissions should match the job the app says it does: a tool that only writes listings has no reason to see your orders, while a tool that fulfills orders has to. We explain the API itself in what is the Etsy API. Keep one more point in mind: an app that uses Etsy's API is not Etsy and does not speak for Etsy.

Listing creation: where the most time goes

According to Etsy's guide to creating a listing, there are 7 tabs to fill in before you can publish, a title can be up to 140 characters, and a listing can carry up to 20 photos. For print on demand, most of those fields are identical on every listing: category, size and colour variations, prices, and the shipping, return and processing profiles. What changes is the design, the images and the words.

An integration helps here in two ways. It fills the repeated fields from a template, and it prepares the copy and the images: a title, 13 tags of up to 20 characters each, a description and mockups. The finished listing can be published straight away or saved as a draft first.

The repetitive work continues after publishing: seasonal price changes, refreshed tags, a new colour added everywhere. An integration can apply those in bulk instead of listing by listing, and you only set the rule.

Automation does not change the wait in search, though. Etsy says a newly published listing may take up to 48 hours to appear in search results and categories. For the full picture of automatic listing creation, see how Etsy listings are created automatically.

Orders, production and tracking

Once a sale comes in, the repetitive work changes: reading the order, finding the right design and variation, picking up the buyer's personalization text, sending the item to production and entering the tracking number once it ships. An integration can pull the order in automatically, match it to the design and pass it to a production partner.

Tracking looks like a small detail, but it matters on Etsy. Etsy says adding tracking information is required to complete an order for US sellers, orders for physical items need valid tracking to count towards Star Seller, and Etsy Purchase Protection also requires valid tracking. You have 3 days to change the tracking number or carrier. More in tracking numbers on Etsy: when and how they are added.

What gets automated and what stays with you

The table splits the daily work of a print on demand shop into two groups: what an integration can take over, and what remains your responsibility.

What always stays with you

Some work cannot be handed to an app, and some should not be.

What Alomations takes over

Alomations is a print on demand workbench that connects through the official Etsy API, and it is not endorsed or certified by Etsy, Inc. You connect on Etsy's own sign-in screen in under two minutes, and you can revoke access from Etsy (connecting your shop in two minutes). A listing run takes your design and produces print-ready files, mockups, the title, all 13 tags and the description, applies your template, and publishes the listing live in your Etsy shop or saves it as a draft when you prefer to look first.

On the order side, the Etsy order arrives resolved, with the design and variant matched and the buyer's personalization text and photos attached. You fulfill it through production partners from the orders screen, or print and ship it yourself. The partner cannot mark an order shipped without a tracking number, and tracking is posted back to Etsy where Etsy allows it. Fulfillment is open on every plan, Free included. The whole flow is laid out on how it works.

Frequently asked questions

Does an Etsy integration see my Etsy password?

Apps on the official API use OAuth: you sign in on Etsy's own screen and your password is never given to the app. You can remove access from Etsy at any time.

Should I automate replies to buyer messages too?

We recommend against it. Star Seller asks for replies to 95% of first messages within 24 hours, so speed matters, but reading what the buyer asked and answering personally matters more.

Do automatically created listings show up in search faster?

No. Etsy says a published listing may take up to 48 hours to appear in search and categories, whether it was made by hand or by an app.

Who discloses the production partner on Etsy?

You do. Etsy requires sellers who use a production partner to disclose it on the relevant listings, through Shop Manager > Settings > Partners you work with.

You can try an Etsy integration on your own shop with the Alomations free plan: see what each plan includes.
