Production partners on Etsy: the rules for print on demand

Etsy allows print on demand through production partners, as long as the design is yours and the partner is declared. Here are the rules and the exact settings.

An Etsy production partner is a company or person outside your shop who helps make your item, and a print-on-demand printer fits that definition exactly. Etsy allows it as long as what you sell is your original design (or the buyer's customization), and in return it asks you to add the partner in your shop settings and disclose it on every listing it produces.

This guide is for sellers who hand printing and shipping to someone else, which is how print on demand works. The rule is short but easy to skip: when you open a shop you are busy with payments, shipping and your first listings, and the partner declaration slides to "later". Etsy can remove listings under its Creativity Standards, so it pays to set this up correctly from the first day.

How Etsy defines a production partner

Etsy's help article describes a production partner as "a company or individual (who's not part of your Etsy shop)" who helps you make the item. Its own example of a print-on-demand service is "Companies that print and ship individual items only when ordered." If a printer turns your file into a shirt, mug or poster and ships it to your buyer, that printer is your production partner.

The definition has edges that matter:

  • Partners apply only "to items that you have designed, or that you have sourced and the buyer has customized."

  • They don't apply to items that you or your shop members physically make.

  • You can't add production partners to supplies or vintage items.

  • White-label manufacturers, OEMs, ODMs, and commercial retailers and wholesalers do not count as production partners. Etsy says sourcing products from them "violates our marketplace policies on reselling."

None of this is new. Etsy began allowing production partners in 2014 to support sellers who wanted to scale.

Where print on demand sits in Etsy's Creativity Standards

Etsy's CEO announced that every item must be "Made by", "Designed by", "Sourced by" or "Handpicked by" the shop, and that listing pages would carry a new item detail showing one of those labels, so buyers can see which one applies to your product.

Print on demand belongs to "Designed by a seller". Etsy's description of that category says "you can offer your original design as a digital download, or use a third party to produce or print your design onto a physical item." The same category "also includes seller-prompted AI creations", and those "must disclose the use of AI." Products personalized with a buyer's own text or image fall under "Sourced by a seller". What no category allows: "Reselling mass-produced items is not allowed on Etsy."

What is allowed and what is not

SituationAllowed on Etsy?Why
Your own design printed by a print-on-demand partnerYesOriginal design, partner declared
A product personalized with the buyer's text or photoYesThe buyer's customization is covered
A design you prompted with AI, printed by a partnerYes, with disclosure"Designed by", and AI use must be disclosed

Etsy draws the line in one sentence: "The key distinction is that the items must be original creations, not ready-made or commercially available products." We cover the other side of that line in Etsy dropshipping vs print on demand.

How to add a production partner, step by step

Etsy's listing guide is direct about it: "If you work with a production partner, you must disclose that production partner in your relevant listings." The setup happens in two places, your shop settings and your listings.

  1. In Shop Manager, open Settings, then Partners you work with.

  2. Choose Add a new production partner.

  3. Enter the partner's name, its location (city, state, province and so on) and a short description of how you work together.

  4. Decide what buyers see: the partner's name, or a descriptive title instead. Etsy's own example title is "Apparel printer".

  5. Click Save partner.

  6. On every listing that partner produces, disclose it as the production partner when you create or edit the listing.

According to Etsy, buyers "can see information about any production partners you work with from your shop's About section." The description you write is public, so keep it plain and true. A line such as "Our designs are printed and shipped to order by a print partner" is enough.

If you use more than one partner

Add each one separately and match every listing to the partner that actually makes it. A shop that gets its shirts from one print centre and its canvas prints from another has two partners, not one. In each partner's description, say honestly how you work together.

Common mistakes to avoid

Keep your designs original, and read our trademark basics for print on demand sellers before you list anything close to a brand. For anything that turns into a legal question, check Etsy's help pages or a qualified professional.

How Alomations handles the production side

Fulfillment in Alomations is open on every plan, Free included. When an Etsy order comes in, it arrives resolved: the design and variant are matched, and the buyer's personalization text and photos are attached. From the orders screen you send it to a production partner, and the item cost and shipping are shown separately before you pay from your balance. The order row says which print centre has the order, so you know where each item is being made when you fill in the partner details on Etsy. The partner cannot mark an order shipped without a tracking number, and tracking is posted back to Etsy where Etsy allows it. If you print some products yourself, you can ship those orders on your own instead.

Our catalog covers Gildan, Bella+Canvas and Comfort Colors apparel, plus mugs, ceramic ornaments, tumblers, tote bags, canvas prints and more. Apparel is printed with DTF, with sublimation for the products that need it, and production for US orders is in the US. Whatever you enter as the partner's location on Etsy should match where your orders are actually printed. If you are unsure what to write in the partner description, our support answers in English and Turkish. Frequently asked questions

Do I have to show my production partner's name to buyers?

No. Etsy lets you hide the partner's name and show a descriptive title such as "Apparel printer" instead. You still have to add the partner and disclose it on the relevant listings.

Do I need a production partner for items I print myself?

No. Etsy says production partners "don't apply to items that you or your shop members physically make." Add a partner only for items someone outside your shop produces.

Can I sell AI-generated designs through print on demand?

Yes. Seller-prompted AI creations sit in the "Designed by" category, but Etsy requires you to disclose the use of AI. See can you sell AI-generated art on Etsy for the details.

Is drop shipping the same as print on demand?

No. Print on demand makes your original design to order through a declared partner. Drop shipping resells ready-made products, and Etsy does not allow it.

You can take your first orders from matched design to tracked shipment on the Alomations free plan.
