Yes, you can sell AI-generated art on Etsy: Etsy files seller-prompted AI creations under its "Designed by" category, next to every other design a seller creates. The condition is that you disclose the use of AI, and that the design is really yours rather than someone else's character, brand or artwork.
This guide is for print-on-demand sellers who use AI image tools for shirts, mugs, wall art or printables and want to stay inside Etsy's rules without making their listings sound apologetic. Getting the disclosure and the originality question right from the first listing means fewer removed listings, fewer disappointed buyers and a shop you can keep building on.
What Etsy says about AI-generated designs
Etsy sorts every item into one of four groups. In a message to sellers, Etsy's CEO wrote that all items must be "Made by", "Designed by", "Sourced by" or "Handpicked by" the shop, and that listing pages would show a new item detail with one of those labels (Etsy CEO announcement). Modern Retail reported the announcement on July 10, 2024 (Modern Retail).
AI art belongs in the second group. Etsy's Help Center summary of its Creativity Standards says the "Designed by" category "also includes seller-prompted AI creations", and then sets one condition: "Seller-prompted AI creations must disclose the use of AI" (Etsy Help Center). The same page says that digital items in your shop "must be made and/or designed by you, the seller", which covers AI printables and downloads too.
Two words do the work in that rule. "Seller-prompted" means you directed the creation, so the design starts with your idea. "Disclose" means the buyer is told. Nothing in it bans AI art, and nothing in it lets you hide it.
Where AI art fits with print on demand
Most AI art on Etsy reaches buyers printed on a product, and that part has its own rule. Etsy allows production partners, including print-on-demand services, "as long as the items being sold are the seller's original design (or the buyer's customization)" (Etsy on print on demand). An AI design you prompted, checked and finished is your design for that purpose. A generated image bought from someone else, or a ready-made product with a print already on it, is not.
When a partner prints and ships for you, Etsy also requires you to disclose that production partner in the relevant listings (Etsy production partners). An AI-designed shirt printed by a partner therefore carries two disclosures: how the design was made and who produces it. Our guide to production partners on Etsy shows where the partner setting lives.
How to describe an AI-assisted design honestly
Etsy requires the disclosure. Use any AI setting Etsy's listing form offers, and say it plainly in the description too, near the part where you describe the artwork. One factual sentence is enough:
"This design was created with AI image tools from my own prompt, then edited and prepared for print by me."
"Artwork generated with AI and finished in my design software. Printed to order by our production partner."
"AI-assisted illustration. Lettering, layout and colours designed by me."
What matters more than the exact phrase is that nothing else in the listing contradicts it. Do not call an AI image "hand-painted", "an original watercolor" or "illustrated by hand" when it was not. Keep the photos faithful as well: Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover a case where "The item doesn't match the listing description" (Etsy Purchase Protection), so a listing that oversells the art loses that cover if a buyer complains.
The disclosure does not need to read like a warning label. People shopping for a funny shirt or a nursery print care mostly about the design, the product and when it arrives. A short, matter-of-fact line respects them and lets the listing get on with selling.
What is fine and what is risky
| Situation | What Etsy's help pages say | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| AI design you prompted and finished | Fits "Designed by", AI use must be disclosed | Add a clear disclosure line to the description |
| AI design printed by a POD partner | Partners are allowed for original designs and must be disclosed | Disclose the AI use and add the production partner |
| AI printables and digital downloads | Digital items must be made or designed by you | Sell only files you generated and prepared yourself |
| Prompting a brand, character or celebrity | Rights owners can report infringement | Leave them out and create original subjects |
| Buying AI images from others to resell | Items must be original creations, not ready-made | Sell only work you directed and finished |
Keep the design your own
AI tools can reproduce things you have no right to sell. A prompt that names a cartoon character, a sports team, a brand or a living artist can produce an image a rights owner will report. Etsy says it "is unable to make legal determinations on infringement allegations" and removes reported content when the report complies with its policy (Etsy IP policy). It also warns that "Repeat reports of infringement may result in the loss of account privileges" (Etsy infringement reports).
The safe habit is to describe what you want in your own words: the subject, the mood, the layout and the colours. Leave the names of characters, brands, celebrities and artists out of the prompt entirely. Whether AI output can be protected by copyright is a legal question that differs by country, so ask a qualified professional if it matters for your business. Our article on trademark basics for print on demand sellers covers the brand-name side.
Check the file before it becomes a listing
An AI image is a draft until you have checked it. Read every letter of any text, because generators still misspell words. Look at hands, faces and edges at full size, and clean up stray marks and halos around the subject. Then make sure the file is large enough to print: one print provider recommends 300 DPI for PNG and JPEG print files (print file requirements). We keep the full list in AI designs for Etsy: what to check before listing.
How the Alomations style library fits in
In Alomations, AI design starts from a style library of 90 looks, grouped by family with sample images. You pick a look and fill in the blanks, so there is no prompt to write, and the design starts from your own idea rather than a borrowed character or brand. New looks are added regularly. Some looks return the artwork and the lettering as separate layers, so you can change a headline without touching the picture, and image to image lets you redraw a reference of your own in a chosen look.
Every design comes back print-ready at 12 inches and 300 DPI, as a transparent PNG with an SVG alongside, and you can finish it in the Design Editor (paid plans) with layers, text, eraser and background removal. Before a listing goes out, check that its description carries your AI disclosure, as Etsy asks. The style library article and the features page show the rest of the design tools.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI-generated art allowed on Etsy?
Yes. Etsy places seller-prompted AI creations in its "Designed by" category. The condition is that the listing discloses the use of AI.
Where should I disclose that a design was made with AI?
Use any AI setting Etsy's listing form offers, and add a clear sentence to the description, close to where you describe the artwork, where buyers will find it.
Can I sell AI-generated digital downloads?
Yes, when you made or designed them yourself. Etsy says digital items in your shop must be made and/or designed by you, and seller-prompted AI creations count as designed by you, with the AI use disclosed.
Will disclosing AI hurt my sales?
Nobody can honestly promise either way. An accurate listing does protect you: buyers get what they expected, and Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover an item that does not match its description.
