The Etsy API is Etsy's official, documented way for software to work with an Etsy shop: an approved app asks for your permission on Etsy's own sign-in screen, then reads or updates only what you allowed, such as listings or orders. Unlike unofficial tools, it never needs your password, and you can remove an app's access from your Etsy account at any time.
You do not need to write code for this to matter. Almost every tool that creates listings, syncs orders or posts tracking for Etsy sellers depends on how it connects to your shop, and that connection decides how safe, stable and reversible the tool is. This explainer is for sellers deciding which apps to let into their shop.
What an API is, in plain words
API stands for application programming interface: a set of agreed requests one program can send another, with agreed answers. Instead of a person clicking through Shop Manager, an app sends a request such as "create a listing with this title, these tags and these photos", and Etsy replies with the result.
The important word is agreed. Etsy decides which requests exist, what data each one returns and which apps may use them. An app working through the API receives the same structured data every time, instead of reading pages built for human eyes.
How an app connects: permission, not passwords
Apps connect to the Etsy API with OAuth, a standard way of granting access without sharing a password. The flow is the same for every approved app:
You click connect in the app.
You land on Etsy's own sign-in screen, on Etsy's website.
Etsy shows which permissions the app is asking for, such as reading your listings or managing your orders.
You approve, and Etsy gives the app a token that works only for those permissions.
The app never sees your password, and Etsy's own security stays in place. Etsy requires sellers to set up two-factor authentication (Etsy Help Center), and an OAuth connection works alongside it rather than around it. If you stop using an app, you remove its access from your Etsy account and the token stops working.
What approved apps can do through the API
Within the permissions Etsy allows and you approve, an app can handle much of the everyday shop work:
Listings: create listings as drafts or publish them, update titles, tags, descriptions, prices and variations, and upload photos and videos.
Shop settings that listings use: read your shipping profiles, return policies and shop sections so new listings use them.
Orders: read new orders, including the variant and any personalization text the buyer entered.
Shipping updates: add tracking numbers to orders.
This is the plumbing behind automatic listing creation. Whatever the app does, Etsy's listing rules still apply: a title can be up to 140 characters, a listing can have up to 20 photos and 2 videos (Etsy Help Center), and you can use up to 13 tags of up to 20 characters each (Etsy Help Center). The API does not lift any of these limits.
Orders are where the API saves the most clicks. For US sellers, adding tracking information is required to complete an order (Etsy Help Center), which is why tracking sync is one of the most useful things an order app does. See tracking numbers on Etsy for the details.
Official API apps and unofficial tools
| Question | App using the Etsy API | Unofficial tool |
|---|---|---|
| How it connects | You approve it on Etsy's own sign-in screen | Asks for your Etsy password, or acts through your logged-in browser |
| What it can reach | Only the permissions you approved | Whatever your account can reach |
| How you stop it | Remove its access from your Etsy account | Change your password and remove the tool |
| When Etsy redesigns a page | Not affected, since it does not read pages | Can break when the page layout changes |
Browser extensions that only help you read or type in your own browser are a different case. The question to ask of any tool is whether it wants your password, and whether it acts on your account in ways you did not approve.
How to tell whether a tool uses the official API
The connect button sends you to a sign-in or permission screen on etsy.com, not to a form on the tool's own site asking for your Etsy password.
The permission screen lists what the app wants to do.
The tool says plainly that it uses the Etsy API.
After connecting, you can remove its access from your Etsy account.
How Alomations connects to Etsy
Alomations connects through the official Etsy API. You approve the connection on Etsy's own sign-in screen, it takes under two minutes, and you can revoke it from Etsy whenever you want. Alomations is not affiliated with Etsy and is not endorsed or certified by Etsy, Inc.
Through that connection, Alomations:
publishes listings in your shop with the title, 13 tags, description, variations and prices in place, live or as an Etsy draft depending on one setting on the run
reads your shipping, return and processing profiles for templates, with Refresh from Etsy when you change them
pulls in orders with the design and variant matched and the buyer's personalization attached
posts tracking back to Etsy where Etsy allows it
The listings manager then shows every connected shop's active and draft listings in one list. The step-by-step guide to connecting your shop in two minutes shows the screens, and what an Etsy integration can automate looks at the wider picture.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to code to use the Etsy API?
No. Apps built on the API send the requests themselves. Your part is to approve the connection on Etsy's screen.
Can an app connected through the API see my Etsy password?
No. You sign in on Etsy's own screen, and the app receives a token for the permissions you approved, not your password.
How do I disconnect an app from my Etsy shop?
Remove its access from your Etsy account, and disconnect inside the app as well. Once access is removed, the app can no longer act on your shop.
Does using the Etsy API mean Etsy endorses a tool?
No. Using the API does not mean Etsy backs the tool. Alomations, for example, uses the official API and is not endorsed or certified by Etsy, Inc.
