Etsy automation means handing the work you repeat on every new listing over to a tool: putting the design on mockups, writing a title that fits Etsy's limits (140 characters at most), a description and up to 13 tags, and then sending the listing to your shop. In Alomations the process has 6 steps, and only the first two are one-time: after you connect your Etsy shop and set up your template, all you do for each listing is pick the design, the mockups and the template, then start the run. Unless you turn on direct publishing, the listing waits for you on Etsy as a draft.
Below, we walk through the process step by step, with one kind of seller especially in mind: print-on-demand (POD) sellers who sell the same design on many products.
By the numbers: POD competition on Etsy
As of October 14, 2026, Etsy has about 142 million active listings, and about 3.86 million of them, or 2.7%, belong to shops located in Turkey. Print-on-demand categories are very crowded: the gender-neutral adult T-shirt category alone has 8.45 million active listings. That is about 6% of all active listings on Etsy.
| Product (Etsy category) | Active listings across Etsy | In shops located in Turkey | Those shops' share | Monthly US searches (eRank) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T-shirts (gender-neutral adult) | 8.45 million | 39,800 | 0.5% | 26,500 (“t shirt”) |
| Mugs | 1.95 million | 14,300 | 0.7% | 30,700 (“mug”) |
| Sweatshirts (gender-neutral adult) | 1.54 million | 5,880 | 0.4% | 21,900 (“sweatshirt”) |
| Totes | 668,000 | 9,440 | 1.4% | 15,000 (“tote bag”) |
| Hoodies (gender-neutral adult) | 401,000 | 3,280 | 0.8% | 17,800 (“hoodie”) |
| Baby bodysuits (gender-neutral) | 203,000 | 1,860 | 0.9% | 1,550 (“baby onesie”) |
Shops located in Turkey hold 2.7% of all listings on Etsy, yet their share in these six products stays between 0.4% and 1.4%.
Most competitors also use all the tags Etsy allows. On October 14 we looked at the most recently created or renewed listings in the T-shirt category and counted only each shop's newest listing. For 88% of the 611 shops, that listing carried all 13 tags; for the 204 shops located in Turkey, it was 89%.
Selling the same design on a T-shirt, a mug and a tote bag means three separate listings: three titles, three descriptions and 13 tags for each. That repetition is exactly the work automation takes over.
Source: Listing counts come from queries we ran through the Etsy Open API v3 on October 14, 2026; the category is the one the seller chose for the listing on Etsy. Search figures are eRank's estimates of average monthly searches in the US, taken the same day. The numbers change every day.
What does automation handle?
When a listing is being prepared, automation takes over these jobs:
Print file: The design is cleaned up and turned into print-ready PNG and SVG files at 300 DPI. A light and a dark version are made as well, so it looks good on every product color.
Mockups: The design is rendered onto every mockup you pick. The right version is chosen automatically for each product and color: light ink goes on dark fabric, and you do not have to set that product by product.
Listing copy: A title within Etsy's 140-character limit, up to 13 tags and a description are written for you. Title length and tag style follow preferences you set once.
Costs: Etsy's fees, the product cost and the shipping cost are shown next to your price before anything goes live.
Sending to Etsy: The listing goes to your shop as a draft by default; if you prefer, it can also be published directly.
Before the listing copy is sent to Etsy, our system checks it once more and brings it in line with the limits in Etsy's tag rules: at most 13 tags, each up to 20 characters. Long tags are shortened to fit in 20 characters without splitting a word, duplicate tags are removed, and the title cannot go over 140 characters.
Step by step: from design to Etsy listing
Here are the steps:
Connect your Etsy shop (once). The connection is made with OAuth through Etsy's own sign-in screen and takes under two minutes. Alomations works through Etsy's official API (Open API v3). We never see or store your Etsy password; we hold only a revocable access token. You can revoke that access whenever you want, from Settings in Alomations or, on Etsy, from the Connected apps tab under Apps in your Account settings.
Set up your template (once). A template holds the settings every listing inherits: product and category, price, the sizes and colors you sell, materials, and your shipping, return and processing profiles. The “Who made it?” field and the Default Description field are in the template too; we come back to both below.
Upload or create your design. You can upload artwork you already have, or generate a design with AI from a sentence or a reference image. Adding an uploaded file to your library costs no credits; each AI image generation costs 2 credits.
Pick the mockups and the template, and start the run. This is also where you decide whether the listing is saved as a draft or published directly. You see what the run costs before you start it.
Automation does the rest. The design is cleaned up, the print files are prepared, the mockups are rendered, the listing copy is written and the listing is sent to your Etsy shop.
Check it on Etsy and publish. Open the draft in your Shop Manager, check it, and publish it when it is ready.
Most of our users finish the two setup steps within 30 minutes; every listing after that starts at step three. You can see the steps with visuals on our How it Works page.
By hand or automated? A step-by-step comparison
The table below shows which work moves to automation at each step, and where the decision stays with you.
| Step | By hand | With Alomations | What stays with you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Print file | You clean up the design and prepare it for print yourself | 300 DPI PNG and SVG, in a light and a dark version | Making sure the design is yours |
| Mockups | You place the design on each mockup, one at a time | Rendered onto every mockup you pick; the ink is chosen to suit the fabric color | Choosing the mockups and checking the result |
| Title, tags, description | You write them yourself, counting characters | A title of up to 140 characters, up to 13 tags and a description | Reading the copy and correcting it if needed |
| Price and variations | You enter sizes, colors and prices again on every listing | Comes from the template; Etsy's fees, product cost and shipping cost appear next to the price | Checking the variation prices |
| Shipping, returns, processing | You choose the profiles on every listing | Comes from the template | Setting up the template correctly |
| Uploading to Etsy | You fill in the listing form from scratch every time | Through the Etsy API, as a draft (the default) or published directly | The decision to publish |
| AI and production partner disclosure | You add it to every listing yourself | Set once in the template; the “Who made it?” setting and the Default Description are copied to every listing | Making sure the disclosure is accurate and complete |
What automation leaves to you
Automation cuts your workload; that is the part we can promise. We do not promise sales or search rankings: how automation affects your sales depends on your product and your niche, and your listings remain your responsibility.
The design and the idea come from you
Automation does not decide what you sell, and it does not guarantee a design's originality for you. Whether you upload the design or generate it with AI, the idea, the choice of niche and making sure the design is yours are your responsibility.
Check every listing before it goes live
Listings created through the Etsy API start out as drafts; publishing a draft is a separate step, and it requires the listing to have at least one image. In Alomations, too, listings arrive as drafts by default.
If you choose to publish directly, you are making that decision when you start the run: unless you turned on a separate review step on the screen where you start it, the listing goes live without waiting for you. That is why we suggest leaving your first runs as drafts and publishing only after you have checked the title, the tags, the mockups and the price of every variation on Etsy. There is a financial reason to check, too: Etsy charges a $0.20 USD listing fee for every listing you publish, and you pay it even if the item does not sell.
Disclose your use of AI
Etsy counts designs a seller creates by prompting AI as “Designed by a seller” items, and it states the rule plainly: “Seller-prompted AI creations must disclose the use of AI.”
The standard listing automation in Alomations does not add an AI disclosure to the listing description on its own; that responsibility is yours. There is an easy way to handle it: whatever you write in the template's Default Description field is added to the description of every listing the automation creates. Write your disclosure there once and it appears on every listing that comes from that template. For example, you could use a sentence like “This design was created by the seller using AI-assisted design tools.”
If you use a per-shop description, add the disclosure there as well, because for that shop it replaces the default description. On your first run with a template that has a default description, read the whole description in the draft and check that the disclosure and the product details are where they should be.
Etsy's help page does not say where in the listing the disclosure should go. The Etsy API's requests for creating and updating listings have no field that flags AI use either, so the only place a tool can put the disclosure is the listing text. When you open the draft on Etsy, also check whether the listing editor has a separate option for it.
Disclose your production partner correctly
If you work with a production partner, Etsy requires you to disclose it on the relevant listings, and it counts POD services (companies that print and ship an item only when it is ordered) among its production partner types. Buyers can also see the production partners you work with in your shop's About section.
In Alomations, production partners are added to a listing only when the template's “Who made it?” field is set to “Another company or person” and at least one partner is checked in the Production Partners field. On a new template, “Who made it?” is set to “I did” by default. This one setting is copied as is to every listing that comes from the template; if it is set up wrong, the mistake repeats on every listing you create with that template. Read Etsy's page on production partners and decide for yourself which option fits your product.
Bulk listing and multiple shops
If you have a lot of designs, you can select them in the Design Library and press Bulk Automate: you pick the template once, and each design becomes its own listing. You can publish the listings right away, save them as drafts, or spread publishing over several days (scheduled publishing comes with paid plans).
Checking matters even more in a bulk run: a mistake in the template carries over to every listing created at the same time, and the listing fee is charged separately for every listing that gets published. We suggest leaving your first bulk run as drafts and publishing in intervals rather than all at once.
If you have more than one Etsy shop, you can send a single run to several connected shops at once and give each one its own template, mockups and shop section.
Getting started
You do not need a credit card to start: on the Free plan you can prepare your first listings as drafts and see the result in your own shop. More than 1,300 sellers from more than 10 countries have signed up for Alomations.
Frequently asked questions
Does Etsy allow automation tools?
Yes. Etsy allows third-party apps that work through its official API, and its developer documentation says plainly that the API is there for tools that automate processes for Etsy shops. It does not, however, allow apps that sidestep the API to retrieve or post Etsy data (screen scraping is not allowed either), and it requires apps that access members' private data to use OAuth. Alomations uses the Etsy API but is not endorsed or certified by Etsy, Inc., and we cannot speak for Etsy on the decisions it makes about a shop.
Do listings go live automatically?
Not by default: listings land in your Shop Manager as drafts and do not go live until you publish them. If you turn on direct publishing when you start the run, the listing goes live once it is ready. Scheduled publishing on paid plans publishes listings in intervals rather than all at once.
How long does it take to prepare a listing?
The time we quote on our site starts at 90 seconds for a listing with one mockup; it varies with the size of the design and the number of mockups, and it is not a guarantee. The one-time setup (connecting your shop and setting up your template) is not included in that time.
Is there a limit on how many listings you can create?
No. None of our plans caps the number of listings; what you spend is credits. A listing built from an AI design costs about 10 credits, and a listing that reuses a design you already have costs about 4. On the Free plan, the 40 credits you get each month while your shop is connected cover about 4 to 6 full listings, and you can generate up to 4 AI images a month on that plan.
