What sells on Etsy at Christmas, and what should you charge? The pattern across the big Christmas keywords is consistent: personalized, mid-priced, fast to ship. Median prices sit between $15.50 and $27.40. On ornaments and stockings, most listings that rank offer personalization. On sweatshirts, almost none do. And the competition between keywords differs by a factor of 176.
We pulled 3,600 active listings across twelve Christmas and Q4 keywords through Etsy's public API in the first week of September 2026, took the 300 most relevant for each keyword, and counted. Here is what the shelf actually looks like before you put anything on it.
Competition is not evenly spread
The number of active listings competing for a phrase is the first thing worth knowing, and the spread is enormous.
| Keyword | Active listings |
|---|---|
| christmas decor | 5,636,000 |
| personalized christmas gift | 2,171,000 |
| christmas ornament | 1,733,000 |
| christmas shirt | 1,398,000 |
| christmas sweatshirt | 626,000 |
| christmas stocking | 515,000 |
| custom christmas ornament | 470,000 |
| christmas svg | 301,000 |
| teacher christmas gift | 294,000 |
| advent calendar | 54,000 |
| family christmas pajamas | 32,000 |
Note what happens when a phrase gets more specific. "christmas ornament" has 1.7 million competitors. "custom christmas ornament" has 470,000. Same product, a quarter of the field, and a buyer who is further along in deciding. "family christmas pajamas" has 32,000, which is 176 times less crowded than "christmas decor", and it is a phrase people type with a credit card already out.
This is the argument for specific phrases in your title and tags, made in numbers rather than in advice. Our guide to all 13 tags covers how to spend them without repeating yourself.
What things cost
Median prices of the US-priced listings in each sample, with the middle half of the range:
| Keyword | Median | Middle 50% |
|---|---|---|
| christmas sweatshirt | $27.40 | $20.00 to $40.00 |
| family christmas pajamas | $24.99 | $17.98 to $33.70 |
| christmas shirt | $23.86 | $17.00 to $29.00 |
| christmas decor | $20.00 | $10.99 to $32.00 |
| christmas stocking | $20.00 | $11.40 to $35.50 |
| custom christmas ornament | $18.00 | $14.00 to $24.95 |
| personalized christmas gift | $17.55 | $6.95 to $24.99 |
| christmas ornament | $15.50 | $10.99 to $25.00 |
Two observations for anyone pricing a product this month.
Adding "custom" moves the price up. Ornaments in general sit at a $15.50 median. Custom ornaments sit at $18.00, and their middle 50% is much tighter ($14 to $25 against $11 to $25), which is what a market looks like when buyers know what the thing should cost. You are not competing with the $3 bulk ornament any more.
The bottom of these ranges is dangerous. An $11 ornament pays Etsy roughly 11% in standard fees before product cost. If that order arrives through Offsite Ads at 15%, the fee load is 26%, and $11 does not survive it. We ran that arithmetic in full in what you actually keep from a $25 sale. Pricing at the median rather than the floor is the difference between a busy December and a profitable one.
Personalization is the Christmas differentiator, except on apparel
The share of ranking listings offering personalization is the widest gap in the whole dataset:
| Keyword | Listings offering personalization |
|---|---|
| personalized christmas gift | 96% |
| custom christmas ornament | 91% |
| christmas stocking | 80% |
| family christmas pajamas | 74% |
| christmas ornament | 60% |
| christmas shirt | 53% |
| christmas sweatshirt | 18% |
| christmas decor | 18% |
Read this as two separate markets. On ornaments and stockings, personalization is the expectation. Listing a plain ornament against a field where 91% of the competition puts a name on it is a hard sell, and it also costs you every search containing "personalized", "custom", "name" or "family".
On sweatshirts it is the opposite: only 18% offer it. Etsy lets you set personalization as optional, with your own instructions and a character limit, so on a Christmas sweatshirt it is close to free differentiation in a market of 626,000 listings.
Variations follow a similar split. Nearly every apparel listing has them (99.7% of christmas sweatshirts, 99% of pajamas), while only 40% of christmas decor listings do. Where variations are universal, missing them makes you look like a smaller shop. Where they are rare, adding a size or colour option is a reason to click you instead.

Speed is part of the product
Median maximum processing time on the Christmas listings we sampled is five days for ornaments, stockings, decor and pajamas, and three days for sweatshirts.
That number is your competitive position in December, whether you think about it or not. Etsy builds the estimated delivery date shown to buyers from your processing time plus the shipping method, and in the second week of December that date is the whole decision. Two similar ornaments at similar prices, one arriving on the 19th and one arriving on the 27th, are not really competing.
It is also the number to be honest about. Missing an estimated delivery date feeds the customer service metrics Etsy uses in ranking, so an optimistic processing time is a debt you repay in search position.
The season is starting right now
One thing was impossible to miss while pulling this data in the first week of September. Of the 300 most relevant active listings for christmas stocking, 102 had been created in the previous four days. For christmas ornament it was 90 out of 300. For christmas decor, 22.
Some of that visibility is Etsy's recency boost, which the company describes as small and lasting hours to days. But the boost only shows listings that exist. Those listings exist because a large number of sellers pushed their Christmas range live in the first days of September.
Last season, the listings that ended up ranking for ornaments and stockings peaked in October, and the apparel ones peaked in November. We broke that down event by event in the Etsy Q4 calendar. If your Christmas catalogue is not built yet, you are not behind. You are exactly at the front of the window, and the next four weeks decide whether your listings have any engagement history when demand actually arrives.
How to use these numbers this week
Pick the more specific phrase. "custom christmas ornament" over "christmas ornament", "family christmas pajamas" over "christmas pajamas". Less competition, higher intent, better prices.
Price at the median, not the floor. $18 for a custom ornament, not $11. The fee stack makes the floor unprofitable.
Add personalization wherever your category expects it, and also where it does not, because that is where it is worth the most.
Set a processing time you can hold in December, then build your last-order date backwards from it.
Publish in batches, starting now. Three listings live this week beat thirty live in November.
That last one is where most shops stall, because a thirty listing Christmas range is thirty titles, 390 tags, thirty descriptions and a few hundred mockups. Alomations exists for exactly that stretch of the year: one design in, a complete Etsy listing with SEO and mockups out, so the calendar stops being the constraint.
Key takeaways
Median Christmas prices run $15.50 to $27.40, and the bottom of the range does not survive Etsy's fees.
Competition ranges from 32,000 listings to 5.6 million. More specific phrases mean a smaller field and a readier buyer.
Personalization is offered by 91% of ranking custom ornament listings and only 18% of Christmas sweatshirts. Both numbers are opportunities, in opposite directions.
Median processing is 3 to 5 days, and that number becomes your ranking and your conversion rate in December.
The publishing wave starts in early September and the listings that rank peak in October for decor and November for apparel.
