The Etsy Q4 Calendar: What to Publish in September, October and November

Thanksgiving belongs in August, ornaments and decor in September and October, Christmas apparel in October and November. The windows come from when the listings that rank were actually created.

When should Q4 listings go live on Etsy? Earlier than feels natural, and not all at the same time. Thanksgiving belongs in August. Ornaments, stockings and decor belong in September and October. Christmas apparel and pajamas belong in October and November. Those windows are not a guess: they are where the listings that currently rank for each keyword were actually created.

Here is the whole quarter, one keyword group at a time, with the dates Etsy sets itself layered on top.

Table of Etsy keywords with the busiest two month publishing window and peak month for each
Busiest publishing window per keyword, from the creation dates of listings that rank.

Where the windows come from

We queried Etsy's public listing search for ten seasonal keywords and took the 300 most relevant active listings for each, then read the original creation date off every listing. For each keyword we found the busiest two consecutive months of last season and what share of that season's listings landed inside it.

For comparison, we ran the same query against four keywords with no season attached, including coffee mug and wall art. Their busiest two-month windows hold only 24% to 33% of the year. The concentration above is real and it is specific to the holiday.

Hard goods go up before apparel

The split in that table is consistent enough to plan around. Ornaments, stockings and decor peak in October. Shirts, sweatshirts and pajamas peak in November. That matches how people buy: decorations get used the moment they arrive, so they are bought through the whole season, while a Christmas sweatshirt is worn in December and gifted at the end of it.

If you sell both, publish the ornaments first. They have the longer selling window and they are the thing shoppers are already searching for in September.

The dates Etsy sets

Some of Q4 is not up to you. Etsy runs its own programme, and last year it looked like this:

  • Cyber Sales event, 24 November to 2 December. Sellers opted in by scheduling a sale of at least 25% off across that window.

  • 27 October was the deadline to be considered for Etsy's own Cyber Week marketing, which required a sale of at least 25% off plus global shipping.

  • Purchase Protection doubled to cover refunds on qualifying orders up to $500 for orders placed between 1 November and 31 December.

Etsy announces the current year's version in the autumn, so treat those as the shape of the calendar rather than confirmed dates. The planning consequence does not change: a late-October decision commits you to a late-November discount. If you want to be in Etsy's Cyber Week marketing, your pricing has to be able to survive 25% off, and that is a decision you make when you set prices in September, not when the form appears in October.

The other deadline: your own processing time

The last day someone can order from you is not 24 December. It is the day your processing time plus carrier transit stops landing before Christmas.

On the Christmas keywords we sampled, the median maximum processing time was five days for ornaments, stockings and pajamas, and three days for sweatshirts. Add typical domestic ground transit and your real cutoff sits somewhere in the middle of December, before the carriers publish theirs.

Two things follow from that.

Set the processing time you can hit in December, not the one you can hit in September. Etsy's estimated delivery dates are built from that number, and missing them damages the customer service metrics that feed your ranking. Etsy's own guidance each autumn is to review processing profiles and lengthen them if needed, because a realistic later date beats an optimistic missed one.

Decide now what happens after your cutoff. Digital downloads, gift cards and ready-to-ship stock are what you sell in the last ten days of December, when made-to-order is finished for the year. Sellers who plan that in November keep selling. Sellers who do not go quiet.

The quarter, month by month

August

Thanksgiving goes live now, and Halloween should already be up. Half of last season's ranking Thanksgiving shirt listings were created in August alone. This is also the month to fix the boring things while you have time: shop icon, return policy, message response rate, and any listing whose photos you have been meaning to redo.

September

Ornaments, stockings and decor. Publish the first batch early in the month so it has weeks of engagement data before the October peak. Etsy's Marketplace Insights tool, in Shop Manager under Stats, gives every seller 15 free keyword searches per week from real Etsy search data, and it is more useful in September than in December.

Price setting also belongs here, because your November discount has to work from these prices.

October

The busiest publishing month of the quarter. Christmas apparel goes up, the second wave of decor goes up, and the Cyber Sales decision gets made. By the end of October your holiday catalogue should be complete, because November is for selling, not building.

November

Selling and shipping. The only listings worth creating now are variations of things already working. Watch your response rate: Etsy reported that sellers replying to pre-purchase messages in under two days converted 27% better on average.

December

Ready-to-ship and digital. Push what can arrive. When the cutoff passes, switch the shop's message to what still delivers, and use the quiet week after Christmas to plan next year while the data is fresh.

The volume problem

Everything above assumes you can put listings live in the month they belong in. That is where the plan usually breaks. A holiday catalogue of thirty listings means thirty titles under 140 characters, thirty sets of 13 tags, thirty descriptions and several hundred mockups, all in the same six weeks you are also packing orders.

The sellers who hit their windows either start absurdly early or stop doing it by hand. Alomations turns one design into a finished listing with SEO and mockups, which is the difference between publishing your Christmas range in October and publishing it in November. If you are still deciding what to use for what, our honest comparison of Etsy automation tools lays out which tools do research, which do creation, and which do analytics.

Key takeaways

  • August: Thanksgiving. Half of last season's ranking Thanksgiving listings were created that month.

  • September and October: ornaments, stockings and decor. These peak in October and sell across the whole season.

  • October and November: Christmas apparel and pajamas, which peak in November.

  • Etsy's Cyber Sales opt-in decision lands in late October for a discount that runs in late November. Price for it in September.

  • Your real last-order date is set by processing time plus transit, not by the calendar. Median processing on Christmas listings runs 3 to 5 days.
