When to Publish Halloween Listings on Etsy: What 900 Ranking Listings Show

Of the Halloween listings that rank on Etsy today, 72% of last season's cohort went live in July or August. Only 7% were published in October, the month people actually buy.

When should Halloween listings go live on Etsy? July and August. We pulled 900 Halloween listings that currently rank on Etsy and checked when each one was originally created. Of the listings created during last year's season, 72% went live in July or August. Only 7% were published in October, the month people actually buy.

That gap between when sellers think Halloween starts and when the winning listings were actually created is the whole point of this post.

How we checked

We queried Etsy's public listing search for three keywords, halloween shirt, halloween sweatshirt and halloween decor, and took the 300 most relevant active listings for each. That is 900 listings. Every Etsy listing carries an original creation date, so for each one we asked a simple question: when was this first published?

Then we filtered to the listings created during last season, so seasoned listings from 2023 and 2024 would not blur the picture, and counted them by month.

The obvious objection, and the control group

Etsy gives new listings a small, temporary boost in search, so you could reasonably argue that we are just measuring the boost: recent listings rank, and recent means summer.

So we ran the identical query on four keywords with no seasonal shape at all: personalized gift, coffee mug, wall art and birthday gift for her. If the clustering were an artifact of Etsy favouring fresh listings, those would cluster in the same recent months.

They do not. One number tells the story cleanly: take each keyword's busiest two consecutive months and ask what share of the year's listings fall inside that window.

KeywordBusiest two monthsShare of the year
halloween sweatshirtJuly to August84%
halloween decorAugust to September69%
halloween shirtJuly to August62%
coffee mug (control)April to May33%
wall art (control)June to July33%
birthday gift for her (control)March to April29%
personalized gift (control)August to September24%

Non-seasonal keywords are almost flat, which is what you would expect when nothing on the calendar tells sellers when to publish. Halloween keywords are not flat at all. The clustering is sellers working to a season, not the algorithm preferring novelty.

Why early publishing works, and it is not the new listing boost

Etsy is unusually clear about the recency boost in its own documentation: it is small, it lasts "anywhere from a few hours to a few days", and the company explicitly says that creating new listings just to get it "isn't an effective search optimization strategy".

So publishing in July does not buy you a boost that lasts until October. It buys you three other things.

Time on the shelf. Etsy says a new listing can take up to 48 hours to appear in search results and categories at all. That is the floor, not the ceiling. A listing published on 20 October has about ten shopping days to exist before the season ends.

Engagement data. Etsy ranks partly on listing engagement rate: how many people view a listing and then buy. A listing needs traffic before it can have a conversion rate, and it needs a conversion rate before the algorithm can decide it is worth ranking. Summer traffic on a Halloween keyword is thin, but it is not zero, and it is what teaches Etsy what your listing is.

Room to fix things. A listing published in July can be rewritten in August after you see which of its 13 tags actually brought traffic. A listing published on 15 October gets one shot.

What Halloween looks like as a market

The keywords are big and the pricing is tight.

KeywordActive listingsMedian price (USD)Typical range
halloween decor1.69 million$15.00$8 to $30
halloween shirt1.31 million$24.99$17 to $31
halloween costume581,000
spooky season shirt484,000
halloween sweatshirt359,000$22.98$17 to $37
halloween tumbler98,000

Two things stand out in that sample.

Personalization is underused on apparel. Only 31% of the ranking halloween shirt listings offer personalization, and just 12% of the sweatshirts. On the Christmas side of the calendar that number runs past 90% for ornaments. Adding a name field to a Halloween shirt is a small change that puts you in a much smaller pool.

Processing times are short. Median maximum processing on those listings is 3 to 4 days. If your print partner needs 7, buyers comparing two similar shirts in the third week of October are seeing two different delivery dates, and only one of them arrives in time.

If it is already August

You are not late. You are at the back of the peak, which is a different problem, and the fix is ordering rather than volume.

  1. Publish the strongest three designs first, today. Not the whole collection. Getting three listings indexed and collecting engagement beats a perfect set of twenty that goes live in September.

  2. Reuse what already ranks. If a design sold last October, relist or refresh it rather than building something new. It has history the algorithm remembers.

  3. Check your title against Etsy's own rule. Etsy's listing guidance says to include holidays and occasions only when they are essential to what the item is. "Halloween costume" is essential. Stapling "halloween christmas birthday gift" onto a plain shirt is the kind of padding that reads as spam to shoppers and does not help you match anyway. Our 140-character title formula covers the structure that does work.

  4. Fill all 13 tags with real variety. Not 13 rewordings of "halloween shirt". Etsy matches queries against tags, titles, attributes and categories together, so 13 near-duplicates cover roughly one search. See the full 13 tag guide.

  5. Set the processing time you can actually hit in October, not the one you can hit in August.

The scale problem is real, though. Doing all of that by hand for twenty designs, each with its own title, 13 tags, description and mockups, is a weekend you may not have in the middle of a season. That is the part Alomations was built to take off your plate: one design in, a full listing with SEO and mockups out.

Key takeaways

  • Among ranking Halloween listings created last season, 72% went live in July or August, and only 7% in October.

  • Non-seasonal keywords show no such clustering, so this is seller behaviour, not an algorithm quirk.

  • Etsy's new listing boost lasts hours to days. Early publishing wins on engagement history, not on the boost.

  • New listings can take up to 48 hours to show up in search at all.

  • Personalization is rare on Halloween apparel (12% to 31%) and is the cheapest way to stand out in a market with over a million listings.
