An Etsy reserve is a hold on part of a new shop's sales: the money sits in your Etsy Payment account for a while instead of going straight to your bank. According to Etsy's help page, reserved funds are released immediately once Etsy can confirm the order has shipped, and for most sellers the reserve is removed within 90 days.
This guide is for sellers who have just made their first sales and are wondering why the money has not reached their bank yet. It matters most in print on demand, where you pay your production partner as soon as an order arrives while part of the Etsy revenue can wait until shipping is confirmed. Once you know how the hold works, you can stop worrying about it and plan your cash around it.
Why Etsy holds funds for new shops
Etsy's reserve article is written for new sellers, and the logic is easy to follow. A new shop has no sales history yet, so there is no record of on-time shipping, smooth deliveries or orders that end without refunds. Holding some of the money in the Etsy Payment account during that early period works as a buffer.
Read it as part of being new rather than as a verdict on your shop. Etsy's article explains how the money comes back: each order's reserved funds are released once shipping is confirmed, and for most sellers the reserve is removed within 90 days. If Etsy sends you a message about your account that you do not understand, ask Etsy Support instead of guessing.
Sellers in Türkiye should know one more detail. Etsy says that no matter how a buyer pays, the funds go to your Etsy Payment account first, and you manage deposits to your bank from there. Because PayPal does not operate in Türkiye, Etsy Payments sellers located there cannot accept PayPal. Our guide to getting paid on Etsy from Türkiye covers the full setup.
How long a reserve usually lasts
Two different timelines are worth separating.
Release per order. Etsy's reserve article says reserved funds are released as soon as Etsy can confirm the order has shipped. For a single order, the wait is really the time it takes you to ship it.
The reserve itself. The same article says the reserve is removed within 90 days for most sellers. The word "most" matters: Etsy does not promise this for every shop, so leave yourself some slack when you plan.
That makes the part you control clear: ship orders within the time you promised, in a way Etsy can verify, and your money becomes usable sooner.
How tracking affects reserved funds
A valid tracking number is the clearest way for Etsy to confirm that an order has shipped. Tracking already sits at the centre of several rules: Etsy says adding tracking information is required to complete an order for US sellers, and physical orders need valid tracking to count toward Star Seller and to qualify for Etsy Purchase Protection.
The points to watch:
Enter the right number. Etsy gives you 3 days to change the tracking number or carrier, and after you send a Shipping Notification you cannot change the order's completion status.
Respect the ship-by date. The ship-by date is the date you commit to ship, and Etsy expects items to be marked as shipped by 11:59pm on that date, in your shop's time zone.
Set a realistic processing time. For a print on demand item, printing and packing days belong inside it. Our guide on what processing time to set for POD walks through the choice.
For the steps of adding a number, see tracking numbers on Etsy: when and how they are added.
The path an order's money takes
| Stage | What happens | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Order arrives | Payment lands in your Etsy Payment account | Send the order to production |
| Reserve in place | Part of the amount is held in the account | Ship within your processing time |
| Shipping confirmed | That order's reserved amount is released immediately | Add a valid tracking number on time |
| Deposit day | Your balance goes to your bank on your chosen schedule | Pick daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly |
| Bank transfer | The money appears in your bank account | Allow 1 to 5 business days |
The deposit options in the table come from Etsy's deposit schedule article: you can choose daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly deposits, and new sellers default to weekly, every Monday. The daily deposit minimum is TRY 600.00 for Turkish lira accounts and USD 25.00 for US dollar accounts, and standard bank transfers may take 1 to 5 business days to appear.
Türkiye also has a deposit fee table: deposits above the 50.00 TRY minimum but below the 600.00 TRY threshold carry a 42.00 TRY fee. Our guide to when Etsy deposits your money covers schedules in full.
Where to follow a reserve's status
Your Payment account. In Shop Manager, the Payment account is where your sales revenue collects and where you manage deposits. Watch your available balance and your next deposit there.
Etsy's reserve article. The official explanation of how reserves work is Etsy's Help Center article. If something about your own account is unclear, contact Etsy Support directly.
Your own order log. Note the order date, ship date and tracking number for each order. You will see at a glance which orders are confirmed as shipped and which are still on their way.
Planning cash flow in print on demand
The real issue for a print on demand seller is that costs come before revenue. An order arrives and you pay the production partner for the item and shipping, while the Etsy revenue may wait for shipping confirmation and then for your deposit schedule. Setting aside enough to cover production on your first few orders lets you keep shipping smoothly while the reserve is in place.
The gap can grow in busy seasons, when more orders arrive at once. If a brand-new shop is heading into a busy season, plan the production cost of the first orders with the reserve in mind. For tax or accounting questions, check Etsy's help pages or a qualified professional.
Seeing where the money goes in Alomations
Alomations does not change Etsy's reserve or deposit schedule: that money sits in your Etsy Payment account under Etsy's rules. What Alomations does is make your side of the picture clear. The finance and profit view shows the profit you kept after Etsy fees and product cost on fulfilled orders, itemises every credit, and counts plan credits and top-ups separately. Our article on the finance view shows it in detail.
The orders screen has a rule that ties straight into reserves: a production partner cannot mark an order shipped without a tracking number, and tracking is posted back to Etsy where Etsy allows it. Item cost and shipping are shown separately before you pay from your balance, so you know your outlay during the reserve period up front. Fulfillment is open on every plan, Free included, and the profit view comes with the paid plans.
Frequently asked questions
Is an Etsy reserve a penalty?
Etsy's article presents it as a step for new sellers, not as a penalty. Each order's reserved funds are released once shipping is confirmed, and Etsy says the reserve is removed within 90 days for most sellers. For anything specific to your account, ask Etsy Support.
When are reserved funds released?
As soon as Etsy can confirm the order has shipped, that order's reserved amount is released immediately. That is why adding a valid tracking number on time matters.
How do sellers in Türkiye get paid?
Through Etsy Payments. Türkiye is not on Etsy's list of countries that use a Payoneer account, and PayPal is not available there. Money reaches your Etsy Payment account first and moves to your bank on the schedule you choose.
Can Alomations remove a reserve?
No. Alomations uses the official Etsy API but has no say in Etsy's payment decisions and does not speak for Etsy. What it can do is pass tracking back to Etsy where Etsy allows it and show you the profit you kept.
