Why new Etsy shops get suspended and how to avoid it

New Etsy shops get paused over identity, payment and policy checks. How to tell a review from a reserve or a removed listing, and the habits that keep a shop in good standing.

The requirements in Etsy's Help Center show where a new shop can get paused or limited: the identity and bank details given at sign-up, the way the shop gets paid, and listings that break one of Etsy's policies. Most of that is in your hands, if you set the shop up carefully and list only original work that you describe honestly.

This guide is for sellers in their first months, including those opening a shop from Türkiye, and for anyone who just got an email from Etsy about their account. We cannot see inside Etsy's reviews and do not speak for Etsy: every Etsy rule below comes from Etsy's Help Center, and only Etsy Support can answer for your case.

Suspension, review, reserve or removed listing: which is it?

Sellers say "suspended" for four different things, each with its own fix. Work out which one you have first.

What you seeWhat it most likely isWhat to do
Etsy asks for a photo ID and a selfieIdentity verification, a normal step in opening a shopUse an unexpired ID in the same name as your bank account
Part of your earnings is on holdA payment reserve on a new seller accountShip on time with tracking, so Etsy can confirm the shipment
One listing disappears with a policy emailA listing removal under a named policyRead the policy, appeal if Etsy offers it, do not relist the same content
The shop or account is limitedAn account-level actionRead Etsy's email closely and answer through the channel it names

Etsy covers identity checks in its guide to opening a shop, reserves in its article on payment reserves, and the policies it removes listings under (Creativity Standards, Prohibited Items, Sanctions and Intellectual Property) in its article on listing removals. Some removals can be appealed from the Policy violations page (Etsy Help: what's new).

Identity and bank details at sign-up

Etsy's rule is plain: "You need to verify your identity before setting up your storefront", using "a photo of your government ID and a clear selfie". The ID "must not be expired and needs to match the name on the bank account you added to get paid" (Etsy Help: opening a shop). An expired ID, or a bank account in someone else's name, does not meet that rule.

The same guide also requires:

  • Two-factor authentication.

  • A debit or credit card for Etsy bills (mandatory for new sellers in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands).

  • A one-time, non-refundable set-up fee, which varies by location.

  • A shop name of 4 to 20 characters, with no spaces or special characters, that does not infringe a trademark.

The shop also needs a way to get paid: where Etsy Payments is not available, new shops generally cannot open (Etsy Help). Türkiye is on the Etsy Payments list, but "As PayPal does not operate in Türkiye", sellers located there cannot accept PayPal (Etsy Help: Etsy Payments countries). Our step-by-step guide to opening an Etsy shop from Türkiye covers each screen.

Payment reserves are not suspensions

A held balance worries many new sellers, but a reserve is about funds, not a pause on the shop. Etsy's help page says "The reserved funds will be immediately released if Etsy can confirm the order has shipped" and "For most sellers, the reserve will be removed within 90 days" (Etsy Help: reserves).

So ship on time with tracking. For US sellers, tracking "is required to complete an order", and valid tracking also counts an order toward Star Seller and Etsy Purchase Protection (Etsy Help: tracking).

Listings that break Etsy's policies

For a print on demand shop, the key rule is clear. Etsy allows production partners, including print-on-demand services, "as long as the items being sold are the seller's original design (or the buyer's customization)", and says "Drop shipping is not allowed on Etsy" (Etsy Help: POD and drop shipping). Our explainer on Etsy dropshipping vs print on demand goes through the difference.

Three more rules catch new shops out:

  • Production partners must be disclosed. "If you work with a production partner, you must disclose that production partner in your relevant listings" (Etsy Help). You add one in Shop Manager under Settings, then Partners you work with. Our guide to production partners on Etsy has the details.

  • AI use must be disclosed. Etsy places "seller-prompted AI creations" in its Designed by category and says they "must disclose the use of AI" (Etsy Help: Creativity Standards).

  • Other people's intellectual property. When a rights owner reports a listing and the report complies with Etsy's policies, Etsy removes it. "Repeat reports of infringement may result in the loss of account privileges", and Etsy asks you not to create new listings for the same content until the issue is resolved (Etsy Help: IP reports). Keep brand names, characters, celebrities and sports teams out of designs and tags, as our trademark basics for print on demand sellers explain. If you are unsure about a design, Etsy points you to the rights owner or an attorney.

Habits that keep a shop in good standing

Etsy's customer service standards apply to all sellers (Etsy Help: customer service standards):

  • Reply to 80% of first messages in a thread within 24 to 48 hours.

  • Ship at least 80% of orders on time.

  • With fewer than 40 reviews, no more than 4 reviews rated 3 stars or lower. With 40 or more, under 10%.

  • With fewer than 300 completed orders, no more than 3 orders with cases refunded from the Payment account. With 300 or more, under 1%.

Good standing matters: Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover shops that are not in good standing (Etsy Help: Purchase Protection).

Habits that keep you well inside those lines:

  1. Check messages every day, weekends included at busy times.

  2. Set a processing time your production partner can actually meet.

  3. Describe each item exactly as it arrives: fabric, size, colour, personalization.

  4. Keep conversations and payments on Etsy. Etsy scans messages, and attempts to move buyers off Etsy are among the reasons it reviews them (Etsy Help: messages).

  5. Grow at a pace you can serve, so messages and shipping keep up with your listing count.

Where Alomations fits

Alomations connects to your shop through the official Etsy API. You sign in on Etsy's own screen (OAuth), the connection takes under two minutes, and you can revoke it from Etsy at any time. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by Etsy, and the standards above apply whichever tools you use. See connecting your Etsy shop to Alomations for each step.

Some habits are built in. Titles say Custom or Personalized when the design is personalized, fabric claims match the template's materials, and a long-sleeve shirt is never called a "tee", so listings match what arrives. When our production partners fulfill an order, the partner cannot mark it shipped without a tracking number, and tracking is posted back to Etsy where Etsy allows it. Two things stay with you: adding the production partner in Shop Manager, and disclosing AI use where you used AI design generation.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if Etsy removes one of my listings?

Check which policy the email names, and appeal from the Policy violations page if Etsy offers it. After an intellectual property report, do not relist the same content until the issue is resolved with the other party.

Do I have to tell Etsy that a print partner makes my products?

Yes. Etsy requires production partners to be disclosed on the relevant listings. Add the partner in Shop Manager under Settings, Partners you work with. You can show a descriptive title such as "Apparel printer" instead of the partner's name.

Who decides whether my shop is reinstated?

Only Etsy. Answer its email through the channel it names, send what it asks for, and contact Etsy Support about your case. For legal questions about a design, Etsy suggests the rights owner or an attorney.

Once your shop is open and in good standing, you can connect it and make a first listing on the free plan.
