What to do when Etsy flags or removes a listing

A removed listing points to one Etsy policy. Learn how to tell which one, what to fix across your shop, and when an appeal makes sense.

If you find an Etsy listing removed or flagged, Etsy is usually acting under one of four policies it names: its Creativity Standards, the Prohibited Items Policy, the Sanctions Policy or the Intellectual Property Policy. Read the notice to see which one it names, fix the cause in that listing and in every listing like it, and appeal only when you are sure the listing followed the rule.

This matters most in a print-on-demand shop, where one design, one phrase or one tag set often sits in many listings at once. A single removal is a clue about the others, and relisting the same thing can make it grow: Etsy says that repeat reports of infringement may result in the loss of account privileges.

The four policies behind a removal

Etsy's help page on removed listings names the policies it acts under: the Creativity Standards, Prohibited Items Policy, Sanctions Policy and Intellectual Property Policy. For a POD seller, the first and the last matter most, because they touch every design you list.

Intellectual property reports

An IP removal starts with a rights owner, not with Etsy. Only the rights owner, or someone authorized by them, can file a report through Etsy's Reporting Portal, and when a report complies with Etsy's policies, Etsy removes the reported content and notifies the members affected (Etsy Help). Etsy also says it "is unable to make legal determinations on infringement allegations or take sides in these matters."

In a shirt or mug shop, the typical triggers are things the seller did not create: a brand name, a sports team, a film or game character, a celebrity's name or face, song lyrics, or a phrase someone owns as a trademark. Our trademark basics for POD sellers and the guide to fan art and parody on Etsy go further into both. The safe path is always the same: original designs, written by you.

Creativity Standards

Every item on Etsy has to be made, designed, sourced or handpicked by the shop. Print on demand sits under "Designed by a seller", which Etsy describes as using "a third party to produce or print your design onto a physical item" (Etsy Help). The same page says "Reselling mass-produced items is not allowed on Etsy" and "Seller-prompted AI creations must disclose the use of AI."

Production partners are allowed "as long as the items being sold are the seller's original design (or the buyer's customization)" (Etsy Help). Etsy's listing guide adds: "If you work with a production partner, you must disclose that production partner in your relevant listings" (Etsy's listing guide). Our guide to production partners on Etsy walks through the setup.

Prohibited items and sanctions

Etsy's prohibited categories include "Hate items", "Violent items" and "Pornography and mature content", among others (Etsy Help). For a POD shop, the usual risk is an edgy joke shirt that crosses one of those lines.

A notice that cites the Sanctions Policy is a different kind of problem from a design issue. Read Etsy's Sanctions Policy and contact Etsy Support before you change anything.

How to read Etsy's notice

Read the notice slowly and write down four things:

  1. The listing, with its design and wording, so you can find others built from the same material.

  2. The policy it names. That decides the fix.

  3. Who filed it, if it was an intellectual property report. Etsy says a seller whose listing is removed gets an email with the contact details of the party who filed the report (Etsy Help).

  4. Whether an appeal is offered. Some removals can be appealed from the Policy violations page, and Etsy says it is expanding appeals "across more policy areas and to more sellers" (Etsy's 2026 updates).

Do not edit or relist anything until the first two are clear. A quick fix to the wrong thing leaves the real cause in place.

What the notice points toWhat it often looks like in a POD shopFirst step

Fixing the listing and the ones like it

The removed listing is only the one that was reported. If the same design, phrase or name sits in other listings, other colours or other shops you run, it carries the same risk. For an intellectual property removal, Etsy is direct: "Do not create additional listings for this content unless the issue is resolved with the other party" (Etsy Help).

Check titles, tags and descriptions as well as the artwork. A name can sit in the text of a listing whose design is entirely your own.

For a Creativity Standards issue, the fix is often paperwork. Add your production partner under Shop Manager > Settings > Partners you work with > Add a new production partner, with the partner's name, location and a description of how you work together (Etsy Help). Etsy lets you hide the partner's name from buyers and show a descriptive title such as "Apparel printer" instead. If a design was made with AI from your prompt, say so in the listing.

When to appeal, and how

Appeal only when the listing followed the policy and you can show it. Keep the message short and factual: what the item is, which rule the notice cited, and why the listing meets it, for example an original design with the production partner disclosed. Keep your original design files as proof the work is yours.

An intellectual property removal is different, because Etsy does not decide who is right. The dispute is between you and the rights owner whose contact details you received, and Etsy says it "isn't in a position to offer legal advice" (Etsy Help). If you believe a report is wrong, speak to a qualified professional before you reply.

While an appeal is open, do not publish a second copy of the listing.

How Alomations helps with the cleanup

The listings manager in Alomations puts every connected shop's active and draft listings in one list, with filters and sort across the whole shop. After a removal, we would start there: go through every listing that might share the design or wording, deactivate the risky ones in bulk, and bulk edit tags (up to 13 per listing) to remove a name that should not be there. The listings manager is open on every plan, Free included.

Alomations connects through the official Etsy API and is not part of Etsy, so it cannot appeal or reverse a removal. And while the listings manager can copy a listing to another connected shop as a draft, never use that on reported content.

Frequently asked questions

Can I relist a design after Etsy removed it?

Not after an intellectual property removal, unless the issue is resolved with the party who filed the report (Etsy Help). Repeat reports can also cost account privileges.

Will Etsy tell me who reported my listing?

For intellectual property reports, yes: the removal email includes the contact details of the party who filed it (Etsy Help).

Can every removal be appealed?

No. Some can be appealed from the Policy violations page, and Etsy is adding appeals in more policy areas (Etsy Help), so check that page for the listing.

Should I deactivate similar listings while I sort it out?

If they share the content that was reported, yes. A deactivated listing can be fixed and reactivated later, while a similar listing left live can draw another report. Our guide to deactivating or deleting Etsy listings explains the difference.

You can try the listings manager and the rest of Alomations on the free plan, with no card needed.
