Keyword research for a niche before you design

Map the phrases buyers use inside a niche first, check which ones have buyers and room to compete, and only then design. A five-step method with a keyword map.

Etsy niche keyword research means collecting the phrases buyers type for a niche before you draw anything, sorting them into groups, and then designing only for the phrases that show buyer interest and leave you room to stand out. Done in that order, a vague niche like "beekeeping" turns into a short list of specific designs, each with its title and tags already half written.

This is for sellers who usually design first and search for keywords afterwards, then struggle to describe a design nobody was searching for. On Etsy, search results are ordered by how relevant the items are to what you search for, and Etsy names tags, titles and attributes among the factors sellers control. A design built around a real phrase is much easier to make relevant.

Why the phrases come before the design

A design without a phrase has no obvious title. You end up describing the artwork ("bee with flowers shirt") instead of the search a buyer actually makes ("beekeeper retirement gift"). Starting from the phrase flips that: the phrase decides who the design is for, what it says and which product it goes on.

It also fits Etsy's own limits. A listing has up to 13 tags of up to 20 characters each and a title of up to 140 characters, and Etsy advises you to clearly describe your item at the beginning of the title. When the design was made for a phrase, that opening almost writes itself.

Step 1: Write the niche the way buyers say it

A niche is a group of people plus the thing they care about. Before you open any tool, write down plain seed words in four groups:

  • Who: beekeeper, new beekeeper, beekeeping grandpa, honey farmer.

  • What they care about: bees, honey, hives, swarms, pollinators.

  • When they buy: birthday, retirement, Father's Day, Christmas.

  • What product: shirt, sweatshirt, mug, tote bag, apron.

Keep the words the buyer would use, not the words a designer would use. "Honey bee shirt" is a search. "Botanical apiary illustration" is a description.

Step 2: Collect phrases where buyers leave traces

  • The Etsy search bar. Type each seed word and note the suggestions Etsy offers as you type. Our guide on finding Etsy keywords from the search bar shows the method step by step.

  • Marketplace Insights. Since a June 2026 update, Etsy's Marketplace Insights tool shows price ranges of recently bought listings for search terms, and since a March 2026 update you can save up to 50 searches. That is a direct signal that a phrase has buyers, from Etsy itself.

  • Keyword tools. Third-party tools give search volume estimates. Treat them as estimates for comparing phrases, not as counts. Our article on how Etsy keyword tools estimate search volume explains why.

  • Your own Etsy Stats. If you already sell something close to the niche, the search terms in your Stats show the words real visitors used to find you.

Etsy also notes that tags suit buyer-minded search terms, for example "gift for her". Collect those gift and recipient phrases too, because they often describe a design better than the niche word alone.

Step 3: Sort the phrases into a keyword map

Put every phrase into one of a few groups. The groups show you what kind of design each phrase is asking for.

Phrase groupExample in a beekeeping nicheWhat it tells youWhat to design
Core nichebeekeeper shirtThe broad product search, usually crowdedNot a design brief yet, too broad
Recipientbeekeeper gift for dadWho receives it and who paysA design that names the role
Occasionbeekeeper retirement giftA reason and a deadline to buyRetirement wording, maybe with a name field
Stylevintage honey bee shirtThe look buyers expectA retro badge layout
Tonefunny beekeeping shirtHumour beats decoration hereOne short joke that reads in a thumbnail
Producthoney bee mugThe object they pictureThe same art adapted to a mug

The core phrase rarely becomes a design on its own. The groups around it do, and the most useful briefs combine two of them: recipient plus occasion, or tone plus product.

Step 4: Check each phrase for buyers and for room

For every candidate phrase, ask two questions.

Does it have buyers? Etsy's own signals are the strongest: the phrase shows up as a search suggestion, Marketplace Insights shows recently bought listings for it, or it already appears in your Stats. A keyword tool's estimate can support that, but it should not be the only reason.

Is there room? Search the phrase on Etsy and read the first page as a buyer would. If the results match the phrase exactly and the photos are strong, the space is tight. If the results only loosely fit (a search for a retirement gift showing general bee shirts), there is room for a listing made exactly for it. Our guide on judging Etsy competition from search results goes further, and long-tail keywords on Etsy covers how narrow is too narrow.

Drop any phrase built on a brand, a character, a celebrity or a team name, however popular it looks. Original designs are the only safe route, and Etsy warns that repeat reports of infringement may result in the loss of account privileges.

Step 5: Turn the chosen phrases into design briefs

Each surviving phrase becomes a one-line brief: the phrase, the buyer, the occasion, the product, the words on the design and the look. "Beekeeper retirement gift: a sweatshirt for a retiring hobby beekeeper, vintage badge, text 'Retired, now I just manage the bees', name optional." That brief gives you the design and the first half of the title at the same time.

Then build the rest of the listing from the same map. Use the other phrases in the group as tags, since Etsy recommends a diverse array of tags, and fill in the attributes too, because Etsy says to fill out both attributes and tags. After publishing, allow time: Etsy says a new listing may take up to 48 hours to appear in search. Later, the search terms in your Stats tell you which phrases from the map actually brought visitors.

Where Aloma fits once your map is ready

Aloma, the AI assistant in Alomations, does not replace your research on Etsy search, but it helps on both sides of it. Before you design, it can read your own connected Etsy shop (each number says when it was read) and answer questions such as what sells best and what those listings share, which tells you which phrases have already worked for you. After your map is done, describe a collection to Aloma, for example "funny sweatshirts for retiring beekeepers", and it finds ideas, shows the plan and its credit cost, can make two samples first, then lists the rest, pausing whenever a choice is yours.

Each listing comes with a buyer-intent title within Etsy's 140 characters, all 13 tags and a description, and goes to your shop live or as a draft. You can open Aloma from the top bar or with Cmd+K ("Ask Aloma"). Our article on Aloma collections shows a full example.

Frequently asked questions

How many phrases should a niche map have?

Enough to fill each group with a few options. The map is a working list you return to, not a target, and a short map you actually design from beats a long one you never use.

Can I trust search volume numbers from keyword tools?

Use them to compare phrases with each other, not as exact counts. Signals from Etsy itself, such as search suggestions, Marketplace Insights and your own Stats, should carry more weight.

What if every phrase in my niche looks crowded?

Combine groups. A recipient plus an occasion plus a style ("vintage beekeeper retirement gift") is usually far less contested than any single word, and it tells you exactly what to design.

Can I target a phrase that contains a brand or character name?

No. Leave those phrases out of the map entirely and design original work. Etsy removes listings when a rights owner files a valid report, and repeat reports can cost you account privileges.
