Using the recipient and occasion attributes on Etsy

Recipient and occasion tell Etsy who an item is for and what it is bought for. Here is how to choose values for a POD design, and what your tags still need to cover.

The recipient and occasion attributes tell Etsy who an item is for and what it is bought for, such as a dad or a birthday, without spending title words on it. For a print on demand item, pick values that describe the design honestly, and use tags for the gift phrases the attributes cannot hold.

This matters because many POD shirts, mugs and ornaments are bought as gifts, and gift shoppers search by person and by event. The fields sit in the listing form's attribute section, they are easy to skip when you are rushing a listing out, and a blank field tells Etsy nothing about who the item is for or what it is bought for.

What the recipient and occasion attributes are

Etsy describes attributes as a way to describe your items with distinct, detailed characteristics, and says they can also help buyers find your items in search results. Recipient answers "who is this for". Occasion answers "what is it for". Both take values from lists Etsy provides, so you choose rather than type.

Which attributes you see depends on the category you pick, so not every listing will offer both fields, and a holiday such as Christmas may sit in a field of its own rather than under occasion. Since a June 2026 update, Etsy also suggests attributes based on listing details such as category and description. Treat those suggestions as a starting point and check each one against the design.

How they connect a listing to gift searches

Three pieces of Etsy guidance fit together here:

Etsy also says that placement for any keyword depends on factors including keyword relevance and any search filters buyers may apply. Our guide to Etsy search filters and how your listing qualifies for them goes further into that side.

Choosing values for a POD item

Describe the design, not your hopes for it. A shirt that says "Best Dad Ever" is clearly for a father, and Father's Day is a fair occasion if the list offers it. A general funny cat shirt has no single occasion, and forcing one in puts the listing in front of shoppers looking for something else.

Let the wording on the design decide the recipient. If the design says Grandma, Teacher or Bride, that is your recipient, where a matching value exists. If the design names nobody, choose the broadest value that is true, or leave the field empty.

Personalized items take the buyer's occasion. A name and wedding date ornament is a wedding or anniversary item, whatever month you list it. Our guide to using 'gift for' keywords well on Etsy shows how to back this up with tags.

Keep the title, tags and attributes in agreement. If the attribute says birthday and the title says Christmas, one of them is wrong for the shopper reading it.

Each tag in the table stays within Etsy's 20 characters per tag.

Common mistakes with these two fields

  • Choosing an occasion the design does not show. It may bring views from the wrong shoppers, and those views rarely turn into orders.

  • Leaving both blank on a clear gift item. A "World's Okayest Uncle" shirt with no recipient set gives search less to work with than it could.

  • Stuffing the occasion into the title as well. Once the attribute carries it, the title can describe the item itself.

  • Using a category that is too broad. If the fields you expect are missing, check the category first. Etsy's own checks ask for the most specific category possible, and our guide to choosing the right Etsy category for a POD item explains how to find it.

How Alomations fills attributes on a listing run

In Alomations, the product, category, price, sizes and colours, materials and profiles live in a template you build once, and every listing run applies it. The run fills Etsy listing attributes from the product, writes a title within Etsy's 140 characters, all 13 tags and a description, and publishes live or as a draft, whichever you set on the run. Gift phrases like the ones in the table above are what the tags are for.

Recipient and occasion depend on the design rather than the product, so they deserve a look on designs made for one event or one person. If you like to review those values in Etsy before a listing goes live, choose draft for that run. Our walkthrough of building your first listing template in Alomations shows what a template holds.

Frequently asked questions

Do the recipient and occasion attributes affect Etsy search?

Etsy says attributes can help buyers find your items in search results, and that search filters buyers apply affect placement. Etsy does not publish how much weight any single factor carries, so treat these fields as one part of a complete listing.

Should the occasion also appear in my title?

Only when it is essential to the item. Etsy's listing guidance advises naming holidays or occasions in titles only when they are essential, so a Christmas ornament can say Christmas, while a shirt that suits many occasions does not need one.

Do attributes use up any of my 13 tags?

No. Attributes and tags are separate fields, and Etsy recommends filling out both. Use the tags for buyer phrases the attribute lists do not cover.

What if my category does not show these attributes?

Check whether a more specific category fits the item. If the fields still do not appear, put the gift and occasion phrases in your tags, which Etsy says are helpful when there is no matching attribute.
