How to choose the right Etsy category for a POD item

The category decides where your item appears on Etsy and which attributes you can fill. Here is how to pick it for shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, wall art and other POD products.

Choose the most specific Etsy category that names the physical product the buyer receives: a printed tee goes under T-shirts and a printed mug under Mugs, whatever the design shows. The category decides where on Etsy your item can appear and which attributes you can fill in, so a pick based on the design's theme costs you both visibility and filters.

This guide is for print-on-demand sellers setting up their first products, and for anyone whose listings sit in a category a buyer would never browse. Category is one of the few listing fields Etsy names directly in its search advice, and once you know the rule it takes a minute per product to get right.

What the Etsy category does

Etsy's own description is one line: "The category determines which sections of Etsy's marketplace your item appears in." In practice that means the category pages shoppers browse and the category filter they click on a search results page. A shirt filed under the wrong branch is invisible to everyone who narrows their search to clothing.

It also counts as a quality check. On its Search Visibility page, Etsy lists choosing the most specific category possible among the checks it runs on each listing, next to a clear primary photo and a return policy. For how this fits with titles, tags and the rest of ranking, see what Etsy SEO is and how Etsy search ranks listings.

Finally, the category decides which attributes the listing form offers you. Etsy describes attributes as a way to "describe your items with distinct, detailed characteristics" and says they "can also help buyers find your items more easily in search results." Pick the wrong category and you get the wrong set of attributes, or a set where nothing fits.

Category picks for common POD products

Etsy adjusts its category tree from time to time, so treat the paths below as the place to start. In the listing form, the quickest route is to type the product name into the category field and take the deepest suggestion that matches the item itself.

ProductStart here in the category treeCommon wrong pick
Unisex t-shirtClothing, gender-neutral adult clothing, Tops & Tees, T-shirtsA pet, party or hobby category chosen for the design's theme
Women's fitted teeClothing, women's clothing, Tops & Tees, T-shirtsThe gender-neutral branch when the cut is fitted

Name the product, not the theme

The most common category mistake in print on demand is filing an item by what the design shows. A tee with a cat on it is still a T-shirt, a Christmas sweatshirt is still a sweatshirt, and a mug with a nurse joke is still a mug. Someone browsing pet supplies is not shopping for clothing, and someone who filters a search to clothing will never see a shirt filed elsewhere.

The theme still matters, it just lives in other fields: the title, the tags, and attributes such as occasion or holiday where the category offers them. Etsy's tag guidance says "Tags are helpful when there's no matching attribute", which is a useful way to split the work. Use the attribute when one exists, and spend a tag when it does not.

Pick the clothing branch by the cut

Clothing splits early by who the garment is cut for, so the blank decides the branch. A unisex tee such as the Bella+Canvas 3001, which the manufacturer offers in unisex sizing from XS to 5XL, belongs in the gender-neutral adult branch. A fitted women's cut belongs in the women's branch, and kids' and baby items have branches of their own.

Getting the branch right also keeps your size options honest, because the shopper arrives expecting the fit that branch implies. If you sell both cuts of one design, two listings in two categories usually serve buyers better than one listing that mixes fits. Our guide to unisex vs women's sizing covers how to explain fit once the buyer lands.

After the category: attributes and tags

Once the category is set, the form shows its attributes. Etsy's advice is plain: "Fill out both attributes and tags for your listings." Three details are easy to miss if you learned the listing form a while ago:

  • Since March 2026 the Materials tag field is gone, and materials exist only as an attribute, per Etsy's updates page. If the shirt is cotton, say so there.

  • Since a June 2026 update, Etsy suggests attributes from details such as the category and description. A wrong category can lead to wrong suggestions, so check each one before you accept it.

  • Categories and attributes are translated automatically, so a correct attribute also reads correctly for shoppers browsing in other languages.

Fixing a wrong category on a live listing

You can change the category of a published listing in the listing editor. The attribute fields change with it, so go through them again before you save, and re-check any that Etsy suggested. When Etsy introduced its Search Visibility page, it said changes "can take up to one day to reflect in search", so give a fix a day before you judge it.

How Alomations keeps the category consistent

In Alomations the category belongs to the template. You build a template once per product: the product and its Etsy category, price, sizes and colours, materials, SKUs, and the shipping, return and processing profiles. Every listing run applies it, so your fiftieth Comfort Colors 1717 listing lands in the same category as the first, and nobody re-picks it from a menu in a hurry. Shops that sell the same product differently can each have their own template.

The run also fills Etsy listing attributes from the product and keeps the copy in line with the template: fabric claims match the template's materials, and a long-sleeve shirt is never called a tee. Our walkthrough of building your first listing template in Alomations shows each field.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Etsy category affect search ranking?

Etsy lists choosing the most specific category possible among the checks on its Search Visibility page, and the category controls where the item appears and which filters it matches. Etsy does not publish a weighting for it, so treat it as a basic to get right rather than a lever to pull.

Should a cat-themed shirt go in a pet category?

No. File it under the clothing category that matches the cut, and carry the theme in the title, the tags and any matching attribute. The same goes for a Christmas sweatshirt.

What if no category fits my product exactly?

Pick the closest specific match rather than stopping at a broad parent category, then describe what the category cannot through attributes and tags.

Do I need a different category for each colour?

No. The category describes the type of product. Colour belongs in a variation or an attribute.
