Etsy SEO is the work of making a listing easy for Etsy search to match with what shoppers type, and strong enough to place well among the other matches. Etsy says it orders results by relevance and weighs listing quality and customer service, and that sellers control the most important of those factors.
This explainer is for you if you have listings live and cannot tell why some get views and others do not, or if you are about to write your first title and tags. Seller groups are full of theories about the algorithm. Knowing what Etsy has actually published keeps you working on the fields that matter.
What Etsy search is trying to do
Etsy's own description is short: search results are ordered by how relevant the items are to what the shopper searched for. Its algorithm works to return the most relevant matches, and results differ from shopper to shopper, so two people typing the same phrase may not see the same page.
Etsy points to two groups of signals. The first is relevance: when it announced its Search Visibility page, Etsy named "keyword relevance and any search filters buyers may apply" among the factors for any keyword. The second is quality and service: Etsy says listing quality is an important factor in getting found, and lists tags, titles, attributes, quality and customer service as factors sellers control.
The plain reading is this. If the words a shopper types appear nowhere in your title, tags, attributes or category, Etsy has little reason to treat the listing as relevant. Once it is relevant, the quality of the listing and the way your shop serves buyers affect where it lands.
Etsy Ads are a separate system. Etsy says ads use a different algorithm than regular search, so a listing's ad results tell you little about its organic position.
The listing fields Etsy reads
Title
A title can be up to 140 characters, and Etsy suggests fewer than 15 words, with no repetition and no subjective words such as "perfect". Its advice for Google adds that you should clearly describe your item at the beginning of the title, since search engines only show the first 50 to 60 characters of a page title. Our guide to writing Etsy titles that rank turns this into a formula.
Tags
You get up to 13 tags, each up to 20 characters. Etsy recommends "a diverse array of tags" and calls tags great for buyer-minded phrases like "gift for her". Spending all 13 on different phrases gives the listing more ways to match. See how many tags you can use on Etsy for worked examples.
Attributes and category
Etsy says attributes can also help buyers find your items and tells sellers to fill out both attributes and tags. Its tags guide adds that tags are helpful when there's no matching attribute. The category determines which sections of the marketplace your item appears in. In March 2026 Etsy removed the Materials tag field, so materials now live only as an attribute, and since June 2026 Etsy suggests attributes from details such as your category and description. Our guide to Etsy listing attributes covers the useful ones.
Description
Etsy advises you to clearly describe your item in the first sentence of the description and to use the words shoppers search for, without repeating the same phrases over and over.
Quality and service signals
Etsy's Search Visibility page shows the checks it runs on a listing: at least one image, a high-resolution primary photo that shows one finished product (no collages) and is clear and well lit, the most specific category possible, and a return policy. Etsy also warns that if your shop is not complete, your listings' search visibility may be affected.
Two settings matter more than sellers expect. A listing without a return policy can rank lower, so set one even if it says no returns. And US listings with domestic shipping prices lower than $6 are prioritized in search.
Customer service counts too. Etsy's announcement names a shop's average review rating, message response rate and case rate, and the help page adds shipping on time with tracking. The table puts every signal in one place, with the spot where you control it.
| Signal | What Etsy says | Where you control it |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Up to 140 characters, describe the item first | Title field of the listing |
| Tags | Up to 13, each up to 20 characters, varied | Tags field of the listing |
| Attributes | Help buyers find items, fill them and tags | Attributes in the listing form |
| Category | Decides where on Etsy the item appears | Category picker |
| Primary photo | High resolution, one finished product, clear and well lit | First photo slot |
| Return policy | Having none can push a listing lower | Return policy on the listing |
| Shipping price | US listings under $6 domestic shipping are prioritized | Shipping profile |
| Customer service | Review rating, message response rate and case rate | How you handle orders and messages |
What Etsy has not confirmed
Plenty of advice online goes further than Etsy does. The Etsy Help Center articles we checked do not confirm that renewing a listing gives it a boost, that translations improve ranking, or how much each factor weighs against the others. Treat any percentage you read about the algorithm as a guess, and spend your time on the fields in the table.
Two timing facts are confirmed, and they matter before you judge a change. A new listing may take up to 48 hours to appear in search, and Etsy's announcement says changes can take up to one day to show. Since March 2026, listing URLs stay fixed after a listing is first published, so rewriting a title no longer changes its link. If a listing still gets nothing after that, our guide to why Etsy listings get no views helps you find which problem you have, and the ranking factors you can control lists the levers one by one.
How Alomations fills the SEO fields
A listing run in Alomations writes the fields Etsy reads. From your design and template it writes a buyer-intent title within Etsy's 140 characters, all 13 tags and a description, applies the category, materials and profiles from your template, and fills Etsy's listing attributes from the product. You set your SEO preferences (title length and tag style) once. Accuracy rules are built in: "Custom" or "Personalized" goes in the title only when the design is personalized, fabric claims match the template's materials, and a long-sleeve shirt is never called a tee. The run then publishes the listing live in your shop or saves it as an Etsy draft, whichever you chose.
For listings already live, the listings manager gives each one a score built from ten checks, each with the fix attached. Update SEO rewrites the title, tags and description of a live listing (the first rewrite per listing is free), and you can swap its mockups. None of this guarantees a ranking. What it does is make sure no field Etsy reads is left empty, repeated or wrong. The features page shows both tools.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a new listing take to show in Etsy search?
Etsy says a newly published listing may take up to 48 hours to appear in search results and categories. Changes to an existing listing can take up to one day to show.
Do Etsy Ads improve organic ranking?
Etsy says ads use a different algorithm than regular search, so you cannot read a listing's organic position from its ad results. Treat ads and organic search as two separate channels.
Should every tag be different?
Etsy recommends a diverse array of tags, and you have 13 slots of up to 20 characters each. Covering different phrases a buyer might type gives a listing more chances to be relevant.
Does editing my title change the listing URL?
No. Since March 2026 Etsy keeps a listing's URL fixed after it is first published, so you can improve a title without breaking links you have shared.
