Etsy attributes are the structured fields in the listing form, such as colour, material, occasion or sleeve length, where you describe your item with Etsy's own options instead of your own words. Etsy says they help buyers find your items in search, and on a print on demand listing the ones to fill every time are the category, primary and secondary colour, material, the garment details, and any occasion or holiday the design is genuinely made for.
This guide is for print on demand sellers who work hard on titles and tags and then skip the attributes because the section looks optional. It is the part of the listing that answers a buyer's filter, and Etsy counts it among the search factors that sellers control.
What Etsy attributes are
Etsy describes them as fields that "allow you to describe your items with distinct, detailed characteristics" (Etsy listing attributes). Tags are free text you type. Attributes are picked from Etsy's lists, which makes them comparable across every shop: black in the colour attribute means the same thing in every listing that uses it.
The fields you see depend on the category you choose. A t-shirt category asks about things like colour, sleeve length and neckline, while a mug or a canvas print asks different questions. That is one reason the category comes first. Etsy says "The category determines which sections of Etsy's marketplace your item appears in" (Etsy listing guide), and it also decides which attribute fields you are offered.
Attributes changed twice in 2026. In March Etsy removed the Materials tag field, so materials now exist only as an attribute. Since a June 2026 update, Etsy suggests attributes from listing details such as the category and description (Etsy updates). Suggestions save time, but they are inferred from your text, so read each one before you accept it.
How attributes help shoppers find you
Etsy states it directly: "Attributes can also help buyers find your items more easily in search results" (Etsy listing attributes). When Etsy lists the factors sellers control in search placement, attributes sit next to tags and titles, listing quality and customer service (Etsy search). Our overview of the ranking factors sellers can control puts them in context.
Filters are where attributes matter most. When Etsy announced its Search Visibility page, it named "any search filters buyers may apply" among the things that affect placement for a keyword (Etsy announcement). A buyer who searches for a shirt and then narrows the results to one colour is asking a structured question, and a listing with a blank colour attribute has nothing to answer it with. Etsy's variations guide makes a related point: buyers cannot filter search results by custom variations (Etsy variations). So wherever Etsy offers its own option for a detail, use it rather than describing that detail only in text.
Attributes also travel across languages. Categories and attributes are translated automatically (Etsy translations), so a buyer browsing in German sees your colour and material in German without you writing a word.
Attributes and tags do different jobs
Etsy's advice is to "Fill out both attributes and tags for your listings" (Etsy listing attributes). Its tags guide adds the other half: "Tags are helpful when there's no matching attribute" (Etsy tags).
In practice, attributes free up tag slots. You have up to 13 tags of up to 20 characters each (Etsy tags), and a plain colour that an attribute already states is a weak use of one. Spend the tags on buyer phrases no attribute covers: the recipient, the joke, the niche, the style, the "gift for her" kind of search. Our guide to all 13 Etsy tags shows how to fill them.
Which attributes a print on demand listing should always fill
The exact fields vary by category, but these come up on nearly every POD listing.
| Attribute | What to enter for a POD item | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Category | The most specific category that fits, such as t-shirts rather than general clothing | Stopping at a broad parent category |
| Primary colour | The product colour shown in your first photo | Leaving it blank on multi-colour listings |
| Secondary colour | The main ink colour of the design | Repeating the primary colour |
| Material | The blank's real fibre content from its spec sheet | Writing 100% cotton for a heather blend |
| Sleeve length, neckline, fit | What the blank actually is | Calling a long-sleeve shirt a tee |
| Occasion and holiday | Only what the design is made for | Ticking holidays that have nothing to do with it |
The category deserves the most care. Etsy's Search Visibility page checks whether a listing uses "the most specific category possible" (Etsy search visibility), and a more specific category usually offers more precise attribute fields too.
For listings with several colours, add colour as a variation using Etsy's own colour options rather than a custom variation, for the filter reason above. Etsy now allows variations for up to three attributes per listing, such as size, colour and style (Etsy updates). Our explainer on what a variation is on Etsy covers the setup.
Keep attributes true to the product
An attribute is a claim about the item, so it has to match what the buyer receives. Material is where POD listings slip most often, because colours of the same blank can differ in fibre. Gildan's spec sheet for the 5000 reads "5.3-ounce, 100% US cotton", but lists 50/50 cotton/polyester for heathers such as Dark Heather and Graphite Heather (Gildan 5000 spec sheet). If one listing holds both, enter the materials the listing really contains and say in the description which colours are blends.
Occasion and holiday follow the same logic. Etsy's title advice is to name holidays or occasions only when they are essential to the item (Etsy listing guide), and that is a sound rule for these attributes as well. A design made for Halloween deserves the Halloween attribute. A general skull design does not need every holiday ticked.
Accuracy protects you after the sale too. Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover a case where "The item doesn't match the listing description" (Etsy Purchase Protection).
How Alomations fills attributes for you
In Alomations, the facts attributes depend on live in the template you build once: product and category, price, sizes and colours, materials, SKUs, and the shipping, return and processing profiles. Sizes and colours can be saved as a variation profile and reused in every template. Our walkthrough of building your first listing template covers the setup.
When a listing run publishes, Etsy listing attributes are filled from the product, and the copy follows the same data. Fabric claims in the description match the template's materials, a long-sleeve shirt is never called a "tee", and titles say Custom or Personalized when the design is personalized. The run then publishes to Etsy live or as a draft, whichever you set. The full list is on our features page.
Frequently asked questions
Do Etsy attributes affect search ranking?
Etsy says attributes help buyers find items in search results and lists them among the factors sellers control. It does not publish how much weight any single attribute carries, so treat every claim of an exact weighting with caution.
Should I accept the attributes Etsy suggests?
Read them first. Etsy suggests attributes from details such as your category and description, so a suggestion can be wrong when the description is vague. Check each one against the product's spec.
Where did the materials field go?
Etsy removed the Materials tag field in March 2026. Materials are now entered only as an attribute.
How long does an attribute change take to show in search?
Etsy says changes "can take up to one day to reflect in search" (Etsy announcement).
