What is a variation on Etsy?

An Etsy variation lets buyers pick a size, colour or style on one listing. Here is how combinations multiply, how variation prices work and Etsy's limits.

An Etsy variation is an option a buyer chooses on a single listing, such as size, colour or style, and each mix of options (a Medium in Black, for example) is a combination that can carry its own price, SKU and quantity. Etsy lets you add variations for up to 3 item attributes on one listing, so a shirt can offer every size and colour without a separate listing for each.

Variations matter most to print-on-demand sellers, whose products almost always come in several sizes and colours and whose costs often change by size. Set up well, one listing covers the whole range. Set up badly, buyers see the wrong price, a colour marked sold out that you can actually make, or a grid too large for Etsy to accept.

Variation types, options and combinations

Three words cover the whole idea:

  • A variation type is the attribute the buyer chooses, such as Size or Colour.

  • An option is one value of that type, such as Small or Navy.

  • A combination is one option from each type together, such as Small in Navy.

Etsy's September 2026 update made it possible to add up to three distinct variations, like size, color, and style, so guides that still say two are out of date. The total number of combinations is capped as well: listings with 1 or 2 variation types can have up to 4,900 combinations, and listings with 3 types up to 2,500.

A variation is not the same as an attribute or a personalization field. Attributes describe the item for search (Etsy says listing attributes allow you to describe your items with distinct, detailed characteristics), while personalization collects the buyer's own text or file. Variations are fixed choices you define in advance.

How sizes and colours combine

Combinations multiply. A shirt in five sizes and eight colours has 40 combinations, and a third type such as sleeve length multiplies that again. When quantity varies by variation, each combination keeps its own stock count.

That has practical uses. If one colour is temporarily unavailable from your print partner, set its quantity to 0: an option with quantity 0 shows as Sold out, though at least one option must stay visible. If you sell many colours, remember that when there are more than 20 options, you can only add photos for 20 of them. Our guide to which shirt colours to offer helps you keep the list focused, and one listing with many colours or separate listings covers when to split a range.

How variation prices work

By default, a listing has one price for every option. Price, quantity, processing profile and SKU can each vary by variation once you switch that on, and then every option or combination gets its own value. Etsy lets you set unique or country-specific prices, SKUs and quantities for up to 400 option combinations, so a very large grid can reach that ceiling well before it reaches the overall combination limit.

For POD apparel, the usual approach is to vary price by size only. Larger sizes usually cost more to produce, so 2XL and up carry a higher price while every colour within a size costs the same. That keeps the price grid short and easy to check. Work out each price from the real cost of that size, and our margin math guide shows how.

Sellers outside the US can set different prices for domestic orders, US orders and all other countries, but listings with more than 400 variation options cannot use domestic and global pricing. If you sell from Türkiye and plan to use that feature, keep large listings under that line.

Two of these catch new sellers out. Buyers cannot filter search results by custom variations, so describe what matters for search in attributes and tags too, as Etsy advises when it says to fill out both attributes and tags. And variations are not supported on digital listings, so a printable file sold in several sizes needs another approach, such as including every size in the download.

SKUs and quantities per combination

Each combination can carry its own SKU, which is how a print partner or an app knows exactly which blank, size and colour to produce. A consistent pattern (product, then colour, then size) makes orders easy to read at a glance and mistakes easy to spot. Our guide to what a SKU is on Etsy explains how to build one that lasts.

Variation profiles in Alomations

In Alomations, variations live in the template. A template holds the product, category, price, sizes, colours, materials and SKUs, and you can arrange prices across sizes so larger sizes carry their own price. Variation profiles go one step further: you save a size and colour set once and reuse it in every template, so a new product does not mean typing the same sizes and colours again. Saved variation profiles open on paid plans.

When a run publishes a listing, it applies the template, so the listing reaches Etsy with its variations, prices and SKUs already set. Later changes happen in the listings manager, which bulk edits variations and prices (by percent or to an exact amount) across listings. Our guide to building your first listing template shows the setup step by step.

Frequently asked questions

How many variations can an Etsy listing have?

Up to three variation types, such as size, colour and style, since Etsy's September 2026 update. Combinations are capped at 4,900 for one or two types and 2,500 for three.

Can each size have its own price?

Yes. Switch on prices that vary for that variation and set a price per option. Unique prices are supported for up to 400 combinations.

Do variations help a listing show up in search?

Buyers cannot filter search results by custom variations, so put the details that matter for search into your attributes and tags as well.

Can digital listings have variations?

No. Etsy does not currently support variations on digital item listings.

You can set up a template with sizes, colours and prices on the Alomations free plan and publish your first listing with variations.
