What is a SKU on Etsy?

A SKU is your own code for one exact product. Here is where it appears on Etsy listings and orders, and why each colour and size should carry its own.

A SKU (stock keeping unit) is a code you create to identify one exact product you sell, such as one design on one shirt in one colour and one size. On Etsy it is a field you fill in yourself in the listing form, and when variations are on, each option combination can carry its own SKU, so you always know which item to make.

Etsy's own wording is short: "Create a custom SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) number for the item to help keep track of your inventory" (Etsy listing guide). For a print-on-demand seller the SKU matters even more than for a seller with shelves of stock, because it is often the only thing that tells you, or a connected tool, which blank, which design and which variant an order needs.

What a SKU is, and what it is not

A SKU is your code, not Etsy's. You choose it, you can change it, and two sellers can use completely different systems. That sets it apart from the other identifiers you will meet:

  • The listing ID is the number Etsy gives each listing, and it shows in the listing's URL. It identifies the whole listing, with all its colours and sizes.

  • A variation option is what the buyer picks, such as "Black" or "L". It is a label, not a code.

  • A barcode (UPC or EAN) is a registered retail code. Print-on-demand products on Etsy rarely need one.

The SKU sits underneath all of these. One listing can hold many SKUs, one for each thing you actually produce.

Where SKUs appear on Etsy

In the listing form, the SKU field sits with the price and quantity details. A listing with no variations has a single SKU.

When you add variations, price, quantity, processing profile and SKU can each vary by variation when you switch that option on (Etsy variations help). With SKU set to vary, the variation table gives each combination, such as Black in L or White in S, its own SKU field.

On the order side, the SKU travels with what was sold. When an order comes in, the SKU of the chosen option is what you, a spreadsheet or a connected tool can use to see exactly which item to make. That is why a print-on-demand shop with clean SKUs can fulfil orders without opening each listing to work out what "Heather Navy, M" was supposed to mean.

Why each variation needs its own SKU

A t-shirt listing with 6 colours and 5 sizes is one listing to the buyer and 30 different products to your printer. A black large and a white small use different blanks, and sometimes different artwork, such as a light and a dark version of the same design. If they share one SKU, the code can no longer tell them apart.

Per-variation SKUs help in three practical ways:

  1. Fulfillment: each order points to one exact blank, colour, size and design file.

  2. Stock: quantity can vary per option as well, and Etsy shows an option with quantity "0" as Sold out (Etsy variations help). If your partner runs out of one colour, you can close just that option.

  3. Records: when you look back at sales, SKUs group the same product across listings, even when the titles differ.

Since the September 2026 update, a listing can have variations for up to 3 item attributes (Etsy updates). There is one limit to keep in mind: "You can set unique or country-specific prices, SKUs, and quantities for up to 400 option combinations" (Etsy variations help). A listing can have more combinations than that (up to 2,500 with 3 variation types), but past 400 you cannot give each one its own SKU. For variations in general, see what a variation is on Etsy.

How to build a SKU system that lasts

A good SKU reads left to right from general to specific, uses the same order every time and has no spaces. Here is one structure for apparel:

Part of the SKUExampleWhat it tells you
Product or blankG5000Which blank to print on (here a Gildan 5000 tee)
DesignDOGMOM014Which artwork file to use
ColourBLKThe garment colour
SizeLThe garment size
Full SKUG5000-DOGMOM014-BLK-LOne exact item

A few habits keep the system useful:

  • Pick short codes for colours and stick to them. "BLK" in one listing and "BLACK" in another breaks every search and spreadsheet.

  • Give each design a number that never changes, even if you rename the listing.

  • Use the same SKU for the same product across listings and shops, so its sales add up correctly.

  • Write the scheme down once, so a teammate or a tool can read it the same way you do.

Keep buyer details, prices and dates out of the SKU. Those change, and a SKU should not. If you are filling in a listing for the first time, our first Etsy listing, field by field guide shows where the SKU sits among the other fields.

How Alomations templates handle SKUs

In Alomations, SKUs live in the template, next to the product, category, price, sizes, colours, materials and Etsy profiles. You set the SKUs for a product once in its template, and every listing a run creates from that template reaches Etsy with them in place. On paid plans, saved variation profiles keep your size and colour sets identical across templates, which keeps the colour and size parts of your SKUs consistent as well.

When orders come in, they arrive resolved: the Etsy order pulls in with the design and variant matched, along with any personalization. For listings you made by hand before using Alomations, you can adopt the listing by connecting it to a design and a fulfillment product, so its orders arrive resolved too. Our guide to building your first listing template shows where SKUs go, and print on demand fulfillment explained covers what happens after the order.

Frequently asked questions

What is SKU short for, and do I have to use one on Etsy?

It stands for stock keeping unit. Etsy's listing guide presents the SKU as your own code for keeping track of inventory, so the system is yours to define. For print on demand it is worth filling in for every variation, because it is the simplest way to know which product an order needs.

Can two listings share the same SKU?

Yes, and when they sell the same product, they should. A matching SKU across listings or shops lets you count the sales of one product wherever it is listed.

What if my listing has more than 400 combinations?

Etsy lets you set unique SKUs for up to 400 option combinations. Above that, split the listing, for example by product type or colour family, so each listing stays within the limit.

Should the SKU use the design name or a number?

A number is safer. Names change when you rewrite a title, while a design number can stay fixed for the life of the design.
