How Etsy keyword tools estimate search volume

Only Etsy knows how often a phrase is searched. Here is how keyword tools model search volume and competition, where those numbers mislead, and how to check them in Etsy.

Only Etsy knows how many times a phrase is typed into its search bar, so the search volume an Etsy keyword tool shows is a modelled estimate, not a count. Tools usually build it from sampled browsing data, web search data, Etsy's autocomplete and the number of listings a search returns, which makes the figure good for comparing phrases inside one tool and weak as a verdict you take without checking in Etsy itself.

This matters because keyword space is small. Etsy gives you 13 tags of up to 20 characters each and a title of up to 140 characters, and a phrase your buyers never type wastes a slot however well it scores.

Why a tool can only estimate Etsy search volume

Etsy says results are ordered by how relevant items are to what the shopper searched for, and that results differ from shopper to shopper. The raw record of what people type, how often and from where sits inside Etsy.

A third-party tool has to rebuild that picture from the outside. The figure it labels "searches per month" is the output of a model: a guess built from the signals the tool can collect, scaled up to look like a market total. That is not a flaw in any one tool. It is simply how the job works from outside Etsy. Our piece on what an Etsy SEO tool measures and what it only estimates covers the other metrics these tools report.

The signals tools usually combine

Tools rarely publish their full method, but the inputs tend to come from the same few places.

Sampled browsing data

Some tools work from a panel: anonymised browsing data from a group of users, collected through browser extensions or bought from data providers. The tool counts the Etsy searches in that sample and scales them up to the whole market. A panel that leans toward one country or one kind of shopper misjudges everyone else, and a browser panel cannot see searches made in the Etsy app at all.

Web search data

Another approach starts from search engine data, such as how often people search Google for a phrase or for the phrase plus "etsy", and converts it into an Etsy figure with a ratio. People word things differently on Google than inside a marketplace, so this suits broad product terms better than the specific phrases buyers type once they are already on Etsy.

Autocomplete suggestions

Some tools collect Etsy's search suggestions in bulk and treat a phrase's presence and position as a demand signal. That is a useful yes or no, but it says little about size, and suggestions shift with the shopper and the season.

Result counts

Competition scores are usually based on how many listings Etsy returns for a phrase. That number is real, but it counts everything that loosely matches. Because Etsy orders results by relevance, the listings that matter for you are the ones on the first pages, not the total.

Where the estimates break down

Each metric inherits the weak spots of the signals behind it:

Tool metricUsually built fromWhere it misleadsHow to check it in Etsy
Search volumePanel data, web search data, autocompleteSmall samples, unseen app searches, monthly averages that hide seasonal spikesType the phrase into Etsy search and read the suggestions
CompetitionNumber of listings Etsy returnsCounts loose matches and says nothing about how relevant the top results areRead the first page: are those products like yours?
Keyword scoreA blend of volume and competitionCarries the weaknesses of both inputs at onceJudge the phrase on fit first, score second
Trend lineChanges in the sampled data over timeThin data turns random noise into a "trend"Compare it with the season or date the phrase belongs to

A few patterns come up again and again:

  • Long-tail phrases. The more specific the phrase, the fewer searches land in a sample, so tools show zero or swing between very different values. Our guide to long-tail keywords on Etsy covers how specific to go.

  • Seasonal phrases. A monthly average flattens a phrase that is huge for a few weeks and quiet the rest of the year.

  • Translated and personalised search. Etsy translates listings automatically and shows different shoppers different results, so one volume figure can hide several markets.

  • Ads data. Etsy says ads use a different algorithm than regular Etsy search, so how an ad performs is no stand-in for organic demand.

How to sanity-check a keyword inside Etsy

Before a phrase earns a tag slot, run it through Etsy itself:

  1. Type it into Etsy search. If Etsy suggests the phrase as you type, that is a good sign shoppers use it. Our guide to finding Etsy keywords from the search bar shows the method.

  2. Read the first page of results. If the results are a different product from yours, that volume belongs to someone else's buyers. If they match, you have found a phrase your buyers use.

  3. Use Marketplace Insights. Etsy's Marketplace Insights tool shows price ranges of recently bought listings for search terms, and you can save up to 50 searches to come back to.

  4. Check your own Etsy Stats. Once listings have been live for a while, Stats shows the search terms that brought shoppers to your shop. That is Etsy's own data, and it beats any estimate. See Etsy Stats explained.

  5. Allow for the delay. Etsy says a new listing may take up to 48 hours to appear in search, and its search visibility announcement notes that changes can take up to one day to reflect in search. Judge a keyword change over weeks, not hours.

Using the numbers without being misled

Treat a tool's volume as a way to sort a shortlist, not as the decision. Start from words that describe your product exactly, use the tool to see which wordings are bigger or smaller relative to each other, then decide on fit.

For tags, Etsy's advice is to use a diverse array of tags, and it points to tags as the place for buyer-minded terms such as "gift for her". Spread your 13 across different angles (product, style, recipient, occasion) instead of 13 variations of one high-volume phrase. For the title, Etsy asks you to clearly describe your item at the beginning, so the most accurate phrase goes first, even when a tool rates another one higher.

Where Alomations fits

Alomations does not try to replace your keyword research. Our part of the job comes after it, when the phrases have to become a listing. In a listing run, Alomations writes a buyer-intent title within Etsy's 140 characters, all 13 tags and a description, and you set your SEO preferences (title length and tag style) once so every run follows them. More on that in how Alomations writes titles, 13 tags and descriptions.

For listings that are already live, the listings manager scores each one with ten checks, with the fix attached to every check, and Update SEO rewrites the title, tags and description of a live listing (the first one per listing is free). The full list is on our features page.

Frequently asked questions

Are Etsy keyword tool search volumes accurate?

They are estimates, not counts. They are most useful for comparing phrases against each other inside the same tool, and least reliable for very specific or seasonal phrases.

Why do two keyword tools show different numbers for the same phrase?

Each tool builds its estimate from different inputs, such as its own browsing panel, web search data or autocomplete, and scales the result differently. Pick one tool for comparisons and confirm your shortlist in Etsy search.

Does a search volume of zero mean nobody searches for it?

Usually it means the phrase is too specific for the tool's sample to register. Check whether Etsy suggests the phrase as you type, and whether the first page of results shows products like yours.

Should I only use high-volume keywords in my tags?

No. Etsy orders results by relevance and recommends a diverse set of tags, so mix a few broader phrases with specific ones that describe your item exactly.

When your keywords are ready, you can try the Alomations free plan and let a listing run turn them into a title, 13 tags and a description.
