An Etsy SEO tool can measure exactly what it can read: your own title, tags, photos and listing settings, checked against limits Etsy publishes. Search volume, competition and keyword scores are estimates the tool builds from other signals, because Etsy does not publish search volume figures.
That difference matters when you decide what to fix. This guide is for sellers who see a keyword score or a monthly search figure in a tool and are not sure how far to trust it. Once you know which numbers are checks and which are models, you know when to act on a tool straight away and when to test the idea in Etsy first.
What a tool can measure exactly
A listing's text and settings are data, and Etsy publishes their limits. A title can be up to 140 characters long. A listing takes up to 13 tags, each up to 20 characters, using only letters, numbers and spaces. Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and high, and wants the first photo at least 635 pixels in each direction to avoid showing up lower in searches.
Etsy's Search Visibility page runs similar checks: at least one image, a high-resolution primary photo showing one finished product, the most specific category possible and a return policy. A tool that reads your listing through the official Etsy API can check all of this with no guesswork. When it flags one of these, you can confirm it by opening the listing, and it is usually worth fixing at once.
Softer guidance can be counted too. Etsy suggests you consider using less than 15 words in a title and avoid repetition. A tool can count words and flag repeats, but whether a title sounds natural to a buyer is a judgement, and that part stays with you.
What a tool can only estimate
Search volume. Etsy does not publish how often a phrase is searched, so a monthly search figure in a tool is that tool's own model. Tools use different inputs, and most do not publish their method in detail. Inputs can include search bar suggestions, how many results a search returns, data from other search engines and activity from the tool's own users. That is why two tools can show very different numbers for the same phrase. We explain the mechanics in how Etsy keyword tools estimate search volume.
Competition. Competition scores often lean on the number of results a search returns. That count is real, but it tells you how many listings match the words, not how many of them are any good.
Keyword score. A difficulty or opportunity score is usually a formula that combines the two estimates above, so it inherits their error.
Rank position. Etsy says search results differ from shopper to shopper. A rank tracker reports one view of one search, not what every buyer sees.
What Etsy says actually ranks listings
Etsy's own statements are short. Results are ordered by how relevant the items are to the search. Listing quality is an important factor in getting found, and Etsy says sellers control the most important factors, naming tags and titles, attributes, quality and customer service. On the customer-service side, Etsy's announcement lists a shop's average review rating, message response rate, and case rate.
No tool knows how Etsy weighs these factors against each other, because Etsy does not publish that. Keep ad scores apart from organic search as well: Etsy states that ads use a different algorithm than regular search results. How much to trust a tool score
The table sorts the numbers you meet most often in SEO tools.
| Number in the tool | Measured or estimated | Where it comes from | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title length | Measured | Your title against the 140-character limit | Fix it if it runs over |
| Tag count and length | Measured | Your 13 tags against the 20-character limit | Fill any empty slots |
| Photo count and size | Measured | Your images against Etsy's photo guidance | Add or replace small photos |
| Return policy and category | Measured | Your listing settings | Set both, since Etsy checks them |
| Search volume | Estimated | The tool's own model | Compare phrases inside one tool |
| Competition | Partly measured | A count of matching results, then a model | Read it as a rough signal |
| Keyword score | Estimated | A formula built on the estimates above | Use it to shortlist, not to decide |
| Rank position | Measured for one view | One search, as one shopper sees it | Watch the trend, not one check |
| Views and visits | Measured by Etsy | Etsy Stats in your Shop Manager | Judge your changes by this |
In practice, we suggest this order:
Act on measured checks at once. A missing tag, a title over the limit or a missing return policy is not up for debate.
Use estimates to compare, and only within one tool. Putting two tools' numbers side by side tells you little.
Confirm the phrase in Etsy itself. Finding keywords from the Etsy search bar costs nothing, and Etsy's Marketplace Insights tool shows price ranges of recently bought listings for search terms, with up to 50 saved searches.
Judge results with your own data. Etsy says changes can take up to one day to reflect in search, and a new listing may take up to 48 hours to appear in search results. After that, watch views in Etsy Stats.
How Alomations scores and fixes a listing
The listing score in the Alomations listings manager runs a live listing through ten checks and attaches the fix to each one. The score is about the listing itself, like the measured rows in the table above, not a forecast of search traffic. A higher score means more checks pass. It does not promise a ranking.
When a check fails, Update SEO rewrites the title, tags and description of the live listing, and the first rewrite for each listing is free. From the same place you can swap the mockups on a live listing. The listings manager is open on every plan, Free included, and the features page shows what else it does.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the search volume numbers in tools come from?
Because Etsy does not publish search volume, each tool produces its own estimate. The inputs differ from tool to tool, and the result is a model, not a figure Etsy supplied.
Why do two Etsy SEO tools show different numbers for the same keyword?
Each one uses different inputs and a different formula. Use the numbers to rank phrases against each other inside one tool, not to compare tools.
Does a high listing score mean a good ranking?
Not on its own. Etsy says results differ by shopper and depend on factors such as relevance, quality and customer service. A score shows that your listing has no gaps on the basics that can be checked.
How long should I wait before judging an SEO change?
Etsy says changes can take up to one day to show in search. After that, look at weeks rather than hours, and track views in Etsy Stats.
