How to organise a new Etsy shop with sections

Shop sections are the shelves buyers browse once they reach your Etsy shop. Here is how to plan them for a young shop and keep them tidy as your listings grow.

Etsy shop sections are the shelves buyers browse once they land in your shop, and Etsy lets you create up to 20 custom sections on top of the default All items section, according to its shop sections help page. For a new shop, the best setup is a small number of full sections that follow the way buyers look for things, which you then split, merge and rename as your listings grow.

This guide is for print on demand sellers who have published their first listings or are about to. With a handful of listings, sections feel unimportant. Once tees, mugs and canvas prints sit side by side, a buyer who arrives on your shop page cannot find what they came for and leaves. Getting the structure right early saves you from moving listings one by one later.

What a shop section is, and what it is not

A shop section is a shelf inside your own shop. A buyer on your shop page sees the section names, clicks one and browses only those listings. An Etsy category is a different thing: Etsy's listing guide says the category determines which parts of Etsy's marketplace your item appears in. In short, the category brings buyers to you from across Etsy, and sections help buyers who are already in your shop find their way. Our guide to choosing the right Etsy category for a POD item covers the first half of that.

Etsy sets three rules for sections, and your plan has to fit them:

  • You can create up to 20 custom sections, not counting All items.

  • A section name can be up to 24 characters.

  • A listing can sit in only one section.

The last rule shapes your plan the most. The same shirt cannot live in both "Teacher Shirts" and "Christmas Gifts", so every listing needs one right home.

Plan sections around how buyers shop

Your section plan should come from how buyers search, not from how you produce. Three logics work well for print on demand shops:

  • By product type: T-Shirts, Sweatshirts, Mugs, Canvas Prints. The clearest structure for shops that sell several product types.

  • By recipient: Teachers, Nurses, Dog Moms. Suits shops that sell one product type to a few focused niches.

  • By occasion: Birthday, Anniversary, Christmas. In gift-led shops, the occasion is the first thing on the buyer's mind.

Do not mix all three. When "Mugs", "Gifts for Nurses" and "Halloween" sit next to each other, you have to decide again for every Halloween nurse mug which shelf it belongs on, and the buyer has to check three sections to find it. Pick one main logic and, if you need it, add a single seasonal section as the exception.

How to name your sections

A section name is the first signpost a buyer reads in your shop. The 24-character limit pushes you toward short, plain names: "Teacher Appreciation" fits, "Funny Teacher Appreciation Shirts" does not.

  • Write in your shop language. If your shop is in English and most buyers are in the US, section names should be in English too. Etsy's guide to opening a shop notes that you won't be able to change the shop language later, so name sections for that language.

  • Use buyers' words. Choose the plain product names people type into search. Internal labels such as "Collection 3" or "New Drop" tell a buyer nothing.

  • Make each name stand on its own. A section called "Misc" or "Other" makes a shop look unsorted.

  • Keep one pattern. All plural product names, or all "Gifts for ..." names, not a mix of both.

A starting plan for a young shop

The table shows a sensible section structure for each stage of a young shop. Every example name fits within the 24-character limit.

Avoid sections that look empty. A section with a single listing makes the shop look unfinished, so open a new section when the listings to fill it are ready. To finish the rest of your shop's first impression, see our guide to setting up your shop banner, logo and About section.

Keeping sections tidy as listings grow

Sections drift as a shop grows. A few habits keep them in order:

  1. Choose the section before you publish. A listing without a section only shows under All items, and moving it to the right shelf later takes time.

  2. Rotate one seasonal section. When a season ends, move its listings back to their main sections and rename the section for the next season. That way old seasonal sections do not eat into the 20-section limit.

  3. Split crowded sections. When a section is long enough that buyers tire of scrolling, divide it into sub-themes.

  4. Review on a schedule. Merge or rename sections that have emptied, dropped to one listing, or no longer describe what is inside.

Etsy Plus subscribers get more shop customization, and Etsy's Etsy Plus page lists featured listings or sections among the options. It is not required: a tidy section structure does its job without Etsy Plus.

How Alomations supports this structure

In Alomations, every listing comes from a template: product and category, price, sizes and colours, materials, SKUs, and shipping, return and processing profiles are saved once and reused in every run. If your sections follow product types, keeping one template per product type follows the same logic and keeps the listings on each shelf consistent. Our guide to building your first listing template walks through it.

If you run more than one Etsy shop, multi-shop publishing, available on paid plans, sends one design to several connected shops in a single run. Each shop gets its own template, its own mockups and its own shop section, so a listing lands on the right shelf even when one shop calls it "Teacher Shirts" and another "Gifts for Teachers". The full list is on our features page.

Frequently asked questions

Do shop sections affect Etsy search ranking?

Etsy's search help page names the factors sellers control in search placement: tags and titles, attributes, listing quality and customer service. Sections are not on that list. Treat them as a browsing tool for buyers already in your shop, not as a search tool.

Can a listing be in two sections?

No. On Etsy a listing can be in only one section. If a product fits two, put it where a buyer would look for it first.

How many sections should a new shop start with?

Etsy allows 20 custom sections, but filling the limit is not the goal. Give each section enough listings to be worth browsing, and add sections as your listings grow. Our article on how many listings a new Etsy shop should start with looks at the same balance.

What language should section names be in?

Your shop language. If your shop is in English and you sell mainly to US buyers, write section names in the plain English words those buyers use.
