Digital products or printed products for a first Etsy shop?

Digital downloads or print on demand for your first Etsy shop? We compare effort, competition, customer service and earnings per sale, using Etsy's own rules.

For a first Etsy shop, digital downloads take the least money and the least order handling, but you have to stand out among listings that are easy to copy and look alike. Print-on-demand products add product cost, shipping, a return policy and tracking to every sale, and in return give you a physical item buyers can gift, personalize and tell apart.

This comparison is for sellers about to open a first shop who have not decided what to sell. The choice decides what your days look like: preparing files, or following orders and answering delivery questions. Etsy's rules for both models are clear, so start with what those rules change.

Side by side: what Etsy's rules change

When you create a listing, Etsy asks you to choose between a physical item and digital files (Etsy Help: creating a listing). That one choice decides what the rest of the listing can do.

The table draws on Etsy's help pages on digital files, return policies for digital listings, variations, returns and exchanges, tracking and processing profiles.

Effort before and after the sale

With digital products, most of the work happens before the sale. You make the file, export it in formats the buyer can open or print, and prepare the listing images. After the sale there is no parcel, no tracking number and no misprint to sort out.

Print on demand moves the work around. Before the sale you need a print-ready file, mockups that show the product, size and colour variations, and shipping, return and processing profiles. After the sale the order goes to a production partner, tracking goes into Etsy, and you watch the delivery. Etsy allows production partners, including print-on-demand services, "as long as the items being sold are the seller's original design (or the buyer's customization)" (Etsy Help: print on demand and drop shipping), and you must disclose the partner in the relevant listings (Etsy Help: production partners). Our guide to production partners on Etsy covers the rules in detail.

Competition and copying

Digital products have a low barrier to entry: no stock, no shipping and no partner to set up. That means an idea you list can be listed by many other sellers the same week, and once a file is sold it sits on the buyer's computer. Standing out takes content that is genuinely different or a very clear niche.

With print on demand, the product, the colour choices, the fabric, the mockups and personalization all give you room to differ, and the same phrase can look completely different in two shops. In both models the rule is original work. Etsy says "Digital items listed in your store must be made and/or designed by you, the seller," and "Seller-prompted AI creations must disclose the use of AI." (Etsy Help: Creativity Standards summary) Our article on selling AI-generated art on Etsy explains that disclosure.

Customer service after the sale

Digital buyers mostly ask about files: which format to open, what size to print, why a download will not start. Because a digital listing cannot carry a return policy, the description has to say exactly what is delivered.

Printed products shift the questions to delivery and fit: where is my order, will this size fit, will the colour match my screen. Etsy's standards for all sellers ask you to reply to 80% of first messages in a thread within 24 to 48 hours and to ship at least 80% of orders on time (Etsy Help: customer service standards). On-time shipping also depends on your production partner's speed, so set a processing time you can keep.

Earnings per sale

Etsy's fees are the same for both models: "$0.20 per listing" and a transaction fee of "6.5% of the total order amount" (Etsy Help: fees). The payment processing fee depends on the country of your bank account, for example 6.5% + 14 TRY in Türkiye and 3% + 0.25 USD in the United States (Etsy Help: payment processing fees). Sellers in Türkiye also pay a 1.67% regulatory operating fee (Etsy Help: regulatory operating fee).

The difference is what comes out before the fees. A digital sale has no product cost and no shipping, so what remains after Etsy's fees is yours. A print-on-demand sale also pays for the product and the shipping, but the buyer is paying for a physical item, and options like personalization can support a higher price. Which one to start with

Digital makes sense if you want to learn Etsy, listing writing and SEO with no product cost, if you can make the content yourself (planners, printable wall art), and if you would rather not follow orders.

Print on demand makes sense if you have a niche in gifted products such as shirts, mugs or Christmas ornaments, if you want to offer personalization, and if you are ready to handle orders, shipping and buyer messages. What is print on demand covers the basics of the model.

You can run both, but in the first months one model makes it easier to see which listings sell and why. Etsy is also testing printed versions of eligible digital files, made and shipped by a third-party print provider. The test is limited to shops based in the US or Canada, and sellers can opt out (Etsy Help: printed versions of digital files). If your shop is based anywhere else, turning your digital designs into printed products means listing them through print on demand yourself.

How Alomations helps if you choose printed products

Alomations is a workbench for Etsy print on demand. Our catalog covers Gildan, Bella+Canvas and Comfort Colors apparel, ceramic mugs and ornaments, tumblers, tote bags, canvas prints, knitted Christmas stockings, an exclusive range of leather goods, and wooden and wallpaper products. Apparel is printed with DTF, sublimation is used for products that need it, and US orders are produced in the US. Each product page shows a from price, for example Gildan 5000 from $6.89 (read October 17, 2026), with shipping quoted separately.

When an order comes in, it arrives resolved: the design and variant matched, and the buyer's personalization text and photos attached. You send it to a production partner from the orders screen, with item cost and shipping shown separately before you pay, and tracking is posted back to Etsy where Etsy allows it. That screen is open on every plan, Free included. If you sell from Türkiye, what you can sell on Etsy from Türkiye is a good next read.

Frequently asked questions

Are digital products easier for a beginner?

They are easier to start: no stock, no shipping and no return policy. They can be harder to stand out with, because similar files are just as easy for other sellers to list.

Can I use variations on digital listings?

No. Etsy does not allow variations on digital items. Make separate listings for different sizes, or offer the files together in one listing (up to five files).

Do I need to hold stock for print on demand?

No. Your production partner prints and ships each item after the order. You do need to disclose that partner in the relevant listings.

Can I sell both in one shop?

Yes. Etsy asks whether each listing is a physical item or digital files. Still, focusing on one model at first makes your results easier to read.
