Gift wrap and gift messages for POD orders

Etsy's gift options assume you pack the order yourself. Here is what works when a production partner ships it, and what to promise buyers instead.

Etsy's gift options were built for sellers who pack their own orders, so in print on demand the rule is simple: offer only what your production partner can actually deliver, and say plainly in the listing what the gift will look like when it arrives. For most POD shops that means a plain shipment straight to the recipient, a gift note only if your partner can include one, and gift wrap only on the orders you pack yourself.

This matters most in the last months of the year, when many orders are gifts sent to someone other than the buyer. Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday, December 25, according to the US federal holiday calendar, and every gift order before it carries a deadline the buyer cares about as much as the print. Gift options are also a quiet source of bad reviews: a buyer who paid for wrapping and received a plain mailer has a fair complaint.

What Etsy's gift options do, and who carries them out

Etsy lets you offer buyers gift options, such as a gift message or gift wrap you charge for. Whatever the buyer picks arrives as part of the order, and whoever packs the order has to carry it out.

When you ship your own stock, that person is you. In print on demand it is your production partner, who prints, packs and ships the item without it ever passing through your hands. So the real question is not what Etsy offers, it is what your partner can do.

If you charge for gift wrap, Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee applies to that charge as well. Where your location has a regulatory operating fee, it is charged on gift wrap too, and for sellers in Türkiye that fee is 1.67%.

What changes when a production partner ships the order

Etsy allows production partners, including print on demand services, as long as the items are your original design or the buyer's customization, and you must disclose the partner in the relevant listings. Whether a gift option ever reaches the parcel depends on what your partner does with it, so before you switch one on, ask your partner four questions:

  1. Can you include a printed note with an order, and what does it look like?

  2. What does your packing slip show, and does it include prices?

  3. Do you offer any gift packaging, and does it change the cost or the production time?

  4. Do you handle an order shipping to an address other than the buyer's own like any other order?

If an answer is no, switch that option off instead of hoping each order slips through. Our guide to fulfilling an order through a production partner covers the rest of that hand-off.

Here is how the common gift requests play out:

Put the message on the product instead

Print on demand has one gift option that works with any partner: printing the message on the item itself. A mug with a birthday line on the back, or a shirt with a name and a date, carries the message to the recipient no matter who packs the box.

Set it up as personalization. Etsy allows up to 5 personalization fields per listing, each set as required or optional, and a text box takes a character limit you choose to fit your design. Optional text fields can carry an add-on price between $0.20 and $500 USD (or the equivalent in your currency), so a printed message can be a paid extra.

Keep the limit tight enough that the longest message still fits the print area, and tell the buyer exactly where the text will appear. Our guide to writing personalization instructions buyers follow has wording you can adapt.

Set expectations in the listing and your policies

Gift buyers fill gaps with assumptions, so say in the description what arrives, for example: "Ships in the printer's standard mailer. No gift wrap. Your message is printed on the back of the mug." Then make sure that is true for every order.

Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover a case where "The item doesn't match the listing description." A promised gift note that never arrived is exactly that kind of mismatch. Repeat the gift details in your shop policies, and our guide to Etsy shop policies shows where they fit.

Timing belongs in the same promise. Set a processing time that covers production, and remember that the ship-by date is "the date that you commit to ship an order to the buyer." You can extend it once, by up to 21 days, before it passes, and Etsy advises confirming with the buyer first. A late gift is rarely rescued by an extension, so plan backwards from the occasion. For year-end dates, see Christmas shipping cutoffs for POD orders.

When to pack gift orders yourself

If wrapping is part of what you sell, handle those orders yourself: have the printed item sent to you, wrap it and ship it on. That adds a shipping leg and extra days, so build both into the price and set a longer processing time for those listings. Etsy lets you set processing times per listing or per variation, so wrapped and unwrapped items do not have to share one promise.

Keep tracking in mind on both legs. For US sellers, adding tracking is required to complete an order, and orders need valid tracking to qualify for Etsy Purchase Protection. For a gift, tracking also tells the buyer whether the parcel arrived before the party.

How Alomations handles gift orders

In Alomations, Etsy orders reach the orders screen already resolved: the design and variant are matched, and the buyer's personalization text and photos are attached. On a personalizable design, the buyer's text is placed in the design when the order arrives, so a printed message reaches production with the order instead of living in a note someone has to remember.

When you fulfill through a production partner, you see the item cost and the shipping separately before you pay from your balance. The order row shows which print centre has the order, the partner cannot mark it shipped without a tracking number, and tracking is posted back to Etsy where Etsy allows it. For orders you want to wrap by hand, you can print and ship the order yourself instead, and custom orders have a screen of their own. Fulfillment is open on every plan, Free included.

Frequently asked questions

Can my production partner include the buyer's gift message?

It depends on the partner. Ask before you switch on gift messages, and if the answer is no, offer the message as printed personalization instead.

Should I charge for gift wrap?

Only for orders you wrap yourself. Etsy's transaction fee applies to the gift wrap charge too, so set the price with that in mind.

Will the recipient see what the buyer paid?

That depends on what goes in the parcel. Ask your partner what their packing slip shows, and do not promise a price-free parcel until you have checked one.

What if a gift arrives after the occasion?

Reply quickly and share the tracking. If the parcel arrived 7 or more days after the estimated delivery window shown at checkout and the order meets Etsy's conditions, Etsy Purchase Protection may cover the refund.

You can run partner-fulfilled and self-shipped orders side by side on the Alomations free plan.
