Wall art buyers on Etsy search with a handful of word types: what the picture shows, the room it will hang in, its style, and how big it is. Good Etsy SEO for canvas prints puts the most important of those words at the start of the title, spreads the rest across your 13 tags and the listing attributes, and backs them up with photos that show the print on a real wall.
This guide is for print-on-demand sellers listing canvas prints and other wall art, where one design often comes in several sizes. If Etsy search is new to you, start with what Etsy SEO is and how Etsy search ranks listings.
The words wall art buyers actually use
Buyers shopping for a bare wall rarely type a single word. They type a subject ("botanical print", "abstract art"), a room ("living room wall art", "nursery decor"), a style ("boho", "mid century modern", "minimalist") and often a size or format ("large canvas", "16x20 canvas print", "framed").
Etsy's search "works to return the most relevant matches" (Etsy Help Center), and relevance starts with your words matching theirs. Etsy also says tags suit "aspirational or buyer-minded search terms (for example, "gift for her")" (Etsy Help Center). For wall art, that adds occasion words such as "housewarming gift" or "gift for new home".
This is where each word type usually earns its place:
| Word type | Examples | Best place for it |
|---|---|---|
| Subject | botanical print, abstract art, mountain landscape | Start of the title, tags |
| Format | canvas print, framed canvas, wall art | Title, category, attributes |
| Room | living room wall art, bedroom decor, nursery decor | Tags, description |
| Style | boho, minimalist, mid century modern | Title if it defines the piece, tags, attributes where offered |
| Colour | sage green, neutral, black and white | Tags, attributes where offered |
| Size | 16x20 canvas, large wall art | Variations, description, one tag for your main size |
| Occasion | housewarming gift, gift for new home | Tags |
Writing the title
Etsy allows titles "up to 140 characters long" but suggests you "Consider using less than 15 words" (Etsy Help Center). It also asks you to "Clearly describe your item at the beginning of the item title", and notes that "Search engines only show the first 50 to 60 characters for a page title" (Etsy Help Center).
For wall art, a dependable order is subject, then format, then one style or room phrase: "Sage Green Botanical Canvas Print, Boho Living Room Wall Art". Leave out subjective words like "perfect", and keep price and shipping details out of the title, as Etsy advises (Etsy Help Center). Our 140-character title formula covers the structure in more depth.
Choosing 13 tags that fit in 20 characters
You get "up to 13 tags per listing", and "Each tag can contain up to 20 characters" (Etsy Help Center). Wall art phrases run long, so count before you type. "boho living room art" fits at exactly 20 characters. "large canvas wall art" has 21 and will be rejected, so "large canvas art" or "oversized wall art" has to do that job.
Etsy recommends "a diverse array of tags" (same source), so give each tag its own angle instead of thirteen versions of "wall art". A balanced set for a sage green botanical canvas might be: botanical print, sage green wall art, boho living room art, bedroom wall decor, kitchen wall art, minimalist plant art, neutral home decor, canvas wall art, large canvas art, plant lover gift, housewarming gift, gift for new home, mid century modern.
No two tags in that set chase the same search. To go narrower, read long-tail keywords on Etsy: how specific is too specific.
Category and attributes for prints
Choose the most specific category you can. Etsy's Search Visibility page lists "the most specific category possible" among its listing checks (Etsy Help Center).
Then fill in the attributes. Etsy says "Attributes can also help buyers find your items more easily in search results" and tells sellers to "Fill out both attributes and tags for your listings" (Etsy Help Center). The list depends on the category, so fill in every field that is true for your print, such as room, subject, colour, orientation or framing, wherever Etsy offers them. Since June 2026 Etsy also suggests attributes based on details like your category and description (Etsy Help Center). Check each suggestion before you accept it.
Materials now live only in the attributes, because in March 2026 Etsy "removed the Materials tag field" (Etsy Help Center). Etsy also notes that "Tags are helpful when there's no matching attribute" (Etsy Help Center), so a detail with no attribute of its own, such as a niche style, goes into a tag. There is more in Etsy listing attributes: which ones help shoppers find you.
Sizes, variations and the description
Most canvas listings sell one design in several sizes, so size becomes a variation. Etsy notes that buyers cannot filter search results by custom variations (Etsy Help Center), so also name your main size in the description, and give it a tag if buyers search for it.
Etsy's advice for the description is to "Clearly describe your item in the first sentence of your description" (Etsy Help Center). For wall art, the next lines answer the questions that lead to returns: the exact dimensions of each size, whether it arrives framed or ready to hang, and what it is printed on. A digital download belongs in a listing of its own, because you "can't offer variations for digital items" (Etsy Help Center).
Photos that show scale
Etsy's Search Visibility checks include a high-resolution primary photo that shows one finished product, with no collages (Etsy Help Center). For wall art, that rules out a grid of every colourway as the first image. Show one print, on one wall, in a room that matches your room keyword.
Etsy recommends photos at least 2000 pixels in width and height, and says "The first photo in a listing should be horizontal (landscape) or square" (Etsy Help Center). You can add up to 20 photos per listing, per Etsy's listing guide (Etsy Help Center), which leaves room for a close-up of the canvas edge, a size comparison and the print in a second room. Add "descriptive alt text" to each image as well (Etsy Help Center). For shot ideas, see canvas mockups: what a good wall art image shows.
How Alomations handles wall art listings
In Alomations, a listing run takes your design and a template and writes a buyer-intent title within Etsy's 140 characters, all 13 tags and a description, then applies the template and publishes to Etsy live or as a draft. You set your SEO preferences once (title length and tag style), and Etsy listing attributes are filled from the product. Canvas prints are in the catalog, so one template holds the product, sizes and prices for every canvas listing.
Smart mockups render your design onto product photos with shading and light, and the built-in mockup library has ready photos for catalog products, so you can list a canvas without owning one. A zoom control lets a wide room shot fill more of the image, so the print does not look small, and you preview the mockups before the run starts.
Frequently asked questions
Should the size go in the title?
Only if buyers search for it and it does not push the subject out of the opening words. Usually the size belongs in the variations, the description and one tag.
How long until a new wall art listing shows in search?
Etsy says that once a listing is published, "it may take up to 48 hours for your listing to appear in Etsy search results and categories" (Etsy Help Center).
Do translations help wall art rank in other countries?
Etsy translates listings automatically and lets your own translations override the automatic ones (Etsy Help Center). It does not say translations change ranking, so treat them as a way to be understood, not as a ranking lever.
