Canvas mockups: what a good wall art image shows

What buyers need to see in a canvas mockup, from scale and edges to room style and light, plus a shot list for a wall art listing and the mistakes that make one look fake.

A canvas mockup is a product image that shows your design on a real stretched canvas, usually hanging on the wall of a real room. A good one answers four questions at a glance: how big the piece looks on a wall, how its edges are finished, which kind of room it suits, and how its colours look in real light.

A buyer cannot touch a canvas, so they judge its size and edges from the photos alone. Those are also the two places where wall art most easily disappoints: a piece that looks smaller than expected, or edges that finish differently from what the buyer pictured. This guide is for print on demand sellers who list wall art, and covers which images prevent those surprises and how to build the photo set for a listing.

The four things buyers look for in a canvas mockup

Every image in a canvas listing should answer at least one of these four questions.

Scale

Dimensions alone are hard to picture on a wall. Show the canvas above a sofa, a bed or a console table: the buyer knows how big the furniture is and judges the piece against it. If you sell several sizes, add a comparison image that shows them side by side on the same wall. We explain the thinking behind room-scale images in poster mockups that show size in a real room.

Edges and depth

What sets a canvas apart from a poster is that it is stretched over a frame and stands off the wall. An angled shot shows that depth and how the edges finish: does the image wrap around the sides, are the sides a solid colour, or are they a mirrored continuation of the image? Show whichever one you actually sell. Sizes and framing are covered in canvas prints on Etsy: sizes, framing and pricing basics.

Room style

The room tells the buyer who the design is for. A nursery design makes most sense in a soft-toned child's room, an abstract piece in a modern living room, a motivational quote above a desk. Pick the room that matches your likely buyer instead of reusing one room everywhere.

Light

Texture and colour on a canvas only show in good light. Soft daylight, without glare or hard shadows, shows the design's colours most faithfully. The light in the room and the light on the canvas should come from the same direction, or the piece looks pasted onto the wall afterwards. Etsy also converts uploaded images to the sRGB colour profile, so exporting your mockups in sRGB avoids colour surprises.

The first photo: what it has to do in search

Buyers first meet your listing as a thumbnail in search results. Etsy's photo guide says the first listing photo should be horizontal or square, should have a width and height of at least 635 pixels to avoid showing up lower in searches, and recommends photos of at least 2,000 pixels in general. Thumbnails are cropped to square, portrait and landscape, so leave space around the subject. Etsy asks you to position your image so your subject is clear in all 3 views, and since June 2026 you can preview listing thumbnails before publishing.

For a canvas, that means the first image should be a room shot with one clearly visible piece, not a collage of sizes. Etsy's Search Visibility page also checks that the primary photo shows one finished product, is not a collage, and is clear and well lit. Frame the room tightly enough that the canvas does not shrink to nothing in the thumbnail. More on this in what your first Etsy photo has to do in search results.

A shot list for a canvas listing

Etsy lets you add up to 20 photos and 2 videos to each listing. You do not have to fill every slot, but every image should answer one of the buyer's questions. This order works for most canvas listings:

OrderImageWhat it tells the buyer
1One canvas in a room, design clearly visibleWhat the product is and how it looks on a wall
2Straight-on view, no roomThe design itself, its colours and detail
3Angled shot showing the edge and depthHow the edges finish and how thick the piece is
4Close-up of the textureThe canvas surface and the print quality
5Scale image next to furnitureThe real size
6Comparison of the size optionsWhich size to choose
7A second room in a different styleHow it fits another kind of decor
8Short videoDepth and light, in motion

Listing videos can be up to 15 seconds long and play without sound. A slow pan from the front of the canvas to its side is enough to show the edge and the texture. If you sell sizes as variations, label the comparison image with the same names as the variation options.

Mistakes that make a canvas mockup look fake

A mockup usually looks fake because of one detail. These are the ones to check for:

  • Perspective and scale that do not match. If a canvas that should be half the width of the sofa fills the wall, buyers stop trusting the size.

  • No shadow, no texture. A canvas stands off the wall and casts a soft shadow. Without one, the design looks stuck onto the screen.

  • Mismatched light. A room in warm evening light with a cool, bright canvas on the wall.

  • Showing something you do not sell. If your product has no frame, hanging hardware or a particular edge style, neither should the image. Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover an item that doesn't match the listing description.

  • Uploading a transparent PNG. Etsy says transparent .png files are not supported, so export mockups on a solid background.

Canvas mockups in Alomations

Smart mockups in Alomations render your design onto product photos with real shading and light (and real folds on fabric products), and they are free to use. Objects in front of the design stay in front. A zoom (framing) control lets a product shot from far back fill more of the image, which helps with room shots where the canvas would otherwise be small in the thumbnail. There is a background picker for flat-lay shots, you can preview every colour and every side before the run, and the mockups are downloadable.

If you have no product photos, the built-in mockup library has ready product photos for the catalog products, and the catalog includes canvas prints, so you can list without taking a single photo. If you want to use photos of your own rooms, your own mockup library on paid plans does that: upload the photo, set the print area once, and reuse it in every run. Smart mockups count toward Etsy's 20 images per listing. See also using a canvas mockup generator for wall art.

Frequently asked questions

How many images should a canvas listing have?

Etsy allows up to 20 photos per listing. Aim for coverage rather than a number: a room shot, a straight-on view, the edge, the texture and a scale image answer the main questions, and the rest can go to other room styles and a short video.

Should the first photo be a room shot or a flat image?

A room shot with one clearly visible canvas is a good starting point, because it shows the product and its scale together. Use Etsy's thumbnail preview to make sure the piece still reads at small size.

Can I use a photo of my own wall as a mockup?

Yes. Make sure the photo is well lit and the wall is seen from a straight angle. In Alomations, on a paid plan, you upload your own photo, set the print area once and reuse it in every run.

What size should a canvas mockup image be?

Etsy recommends listing photos with a width and height of at least 2,000 pixels. The first photo should be horizontal or square.
