Using a canvas mockup generator for wall art

A canvas mockup only sells the art when the ratio matches, the room fits the buyer and nothing gets cropped. A step-by-step workflow for Etsy wall art.

A canvas mockup generator places your artwork onto a photo of a stretched canvas in a room, so buyers can judge the piece at scale before they order. It works only when the canvas in the mockup has the same aspect ratio as your art, the room suits the person you are selling to, and nothing in the process crops the edges you meant to keep.

This is for sellers listing wall art as canvas prints, from digital designs to prints of their own original paintings. With wall art the image does most of the selling: buyers cannot touch the canvas, so the mockup has to show how big it is, how it sits on a wall and what happens at the edges. If you are still choosing a format, our comparison of posters and canvas prints is a good place to start.

Step 1: match the aspect ratio before anything else

Aspect ratio is the shape of a rectangle, its width compared with its height. A 16 x 20 inch canvas and an 8 x 10 inch canvas share the same 4:5 shape, so the same artwork fits both. A 12 x 18 inch canvas is a longer 2:3 shape, and 4:5 art placed on it has to be cropped, stretched or padded.

Most mockup problems start here. A generator that receives art in the wrong shape fills the frame by cutting off edges or squeezing the image. Never accept a stretched result, because buyers notice distorted faces and lettering at once. Decide which sizes you will sell, check which ones your print provider offers, and prepare a file for each shape.

Aspect ratioExample canvas sizes (inches)Shape
1:112 x 12, 16 x 16, 20 x 20Square
4:58 x 10, 16 x 20Slightly tall rectangle
11:1411 x 14Between 4:5 and 3:4
3:412 x 16, 18 x 24Medium rectangle
2:312 x 18, 16 x 24, 24 x 36Long rectangle

The print file follows the same rule. One provider's guide recommends 300 DPI for JPEG and PNG files, with 120 to 150 DPI for large-format products (print file guide), and another says to "Make sure the file is sized to match the actual print dimensions to ensure DPI is calculated correctly" (file guidelines). A file in the right ratio and size gives you a clean mockup and a clean print from the same source.

Step 2: keep the art uncropped

On a gallery-wrapped canvas the image often continues around the wooden frame, so a strip of the artwork ends up on the sides rather than the front. Keep signatures, lettering and faces well inside the edges, in a safe area, so neither the wrap nor the mockup cuts them. Our explainers on bleed and safe area and how canvas prints are made show where that cut falls.

Inside the generator, check three things on every render:

  • All four corners of the art are visible on the front of the canvas.

  • Nothing in the scene (a lamp, a plant, a chair back) covers part of the artwork.

  • The art has not been scaled past the edge of the canvas to fill a mismatched frame.

Step 3: choose rooms that suit the buyer

The room tells the shopper who the art is for. Nursery prints belong in a nursery, abstract pieces in a living room, botanical prints in a kitchen or hallway, motivational pieces in a home office. Pick the room your buyer pictures, not the most stylish photo you can find.

Scale is the second job. Furniture gives the eye a reference: a canvas above a sofa, beside a bed or over a desk reads as a real size. Make that size honest. A small canvas should not fill the wall above a sofa in the photo, because a buyer who expects that will be disappointed when the parcel arrives. Our guide to poster mockups that show size in a real room applies to canvas as well.

Keep the room quiet. Busy wallpaper, strong colours and clutter compete with the art. A pale wall and soft light let the canvas be the strongest thing in the frame. If you list a series, use the same rooms across it so your shop looks consistent.

Step 4: build the full image set for Etsy

The first image does the heavy lifting in search. Etsy asks for a horizontal (landscape) or square first photo of at least 635 pixels in width and height, and recommends 2,000 pixels or more (Etsy Help: photo guidelines). Keep the canvas centred with space around it, because Etsy recommends you "Position your image so your subject is clear in all 3 views used across Etsy" (Etsy Help: thumbnails). Etsy's Search Visibility page also checks for a primary photo that shows one finished product, with no collages (Etsy Help: search visibility).

After that, a strong set usually includes:

  • a closer room shot where the art fills more of the frame

  • a straight-on view of the artwork alone

  • an angled shot that shows the wrapped edge and the depth of the canvas

  • a size comparison across the sizes you offer

  • the same art in a second room for a different buyer

You can add up to 20 photos per listing, per Etsy's listing guide, plus up to 2 videos of up to 15 seconds each, which play without sound (Etsy Help: videos). Export flat JPG or PNG files, since "transparent .png files are not supported", and expect Etsy to convert images to sRGB (Etsy Help). Etsy also suggests "descriptive alt text, or alternative text, for each image" (Etsy Help: SEO for your shop), so describe the art and the room in a few plain words.

How Alomations renders canvas mockups

Smart mockups in Alomations render your design onto product photos with real shading and light, so the art looks printed on the surface rather than pasted on top. Canvas prints are part of the catalog, and the built-in mockup library has ready product photos for the catalog products, so you can list a canvas without photographing one. The zoom (framing) control lets a product shot from far back fill more of the image, which helps when a room scene makes the canvas look small, and objects in front of the design stay in front. You can preview every side before the run and download the renders. Smart mockups are free to use.

On paid plans you can also upload your own room photos to your own mockup library, set the print area once and reuse it in every run, which suits sellers who want a signature set of rooms across a collection. Our guide to canvas mockups covers what a good set should show.

Frequently asked questions

What resolution should a canvas mockup be for Etsy?

Etsy recommends listing photos of at least 2,000 pixels in width and height, and asks for at least 635 pixels on the first photo to avoid showing lower in search (Etsy Help).

Can I use one mockup for every canvas size?

Only for sizes that share the same aspect ratio. An 8 x 10 and a 16 x 20 canvas can share a mockup. A 12 x 18 canvas needs its own, or the art will be cropped or stretched.

Should the first image be a room scene or the canvas alone?

Use whichever shows the art largest and clearest at thumbnail size. A close room shot often does both: it shows the art and hints at its scale.

Is a video worth adding for wall art?

It can help show depth and edges. Etsy allows up to 2 videos per listing of up to 15 seconds each, without sound (Etsy Help).
