Poster mockups that show size in a real room

Buyers judge a poster's size from the room around it. How to build poster mockups that show true scale and framing, and which image goes where in an Etsy listing.

A good poster mockup shows the print at the size you sell, in its true proportions, next to something whose size everyone knows: a sofa, a bed, a desk. A room shot that exaggerates scale can look more attractive at first glance, but it sets the wrong expectation, so the frame in every image should be the size the buyer will actually receive.

This is for sellers of posters and printable wall art who would rather not read "it's smaller than I expected" in their messages again. Buyers often take the size from the photos rather than the dimensions in the text, and a well-built room shot answers the size question before anyone has to ask it. If you have not settled what to sell yet, our comparison of posters and canvas prints covers that choice first.

Why buyers read size from the mockup

A poster cannot be picked up and held before buying, and a dimension like "18 x 24 inches" stays abstract until it is shown on a wall. Etsy asks you to describe the details of your item so buyers know what they're getting, and the photos are part of that description.

Accuracy has a practical side as well. Etsy Purchase Protection covers cases where the item matches the listing description and photos but a buyer claims it does not, and it does not cover cases where the item doesn't match the listing description. Mockups that show scale honestly keep you on the right side of that line.

What makes a room shot show scale correctly

  • A reference with a known size. A sofa, a headboard, a chair or a desk already has a size in the buyer's head. Show the poster beside one of them, and make sure the frame's size relative to the furniture is believable for that print size.

  • The same aspect ratio as the print. The frame in the mockup must match the ratio of what you sell. 24 x 36 inches is 2:3, 18 x 24 inches and 30 x 40 cm are 3:4, 8 x 10 and 16 x 20 inches are 4:5, 50 x 70 cm is 5:7, and A-series paper (A4, A3 and so on) is about 1:1.41. Dropping a 2:3 design into a 4:5 frame means either cropping or empty margins, and buyers notice.

  • A straight-on first view. Show the poster face-on in the main image. Room shots can have perspective, as long as the proportions survive.

  • Honest framing and matting. A mat reduces the visible print area. If the frame is not included, say so on the image and in the description.

  • Light that belongs to the room. Light and shadow on the poster should come from the same direction as in the room, or the image looks pasted on. Our list of mockup mistakes that make listings look fake covers the other giveaways.

The size comparison image: when and where

If you sell several sizes, one image showing all of them on the same wall, beside the same piece of furniture, makes the buyer's choice easy. Do not use it as the first photo: Etsy's Search Visibility page checks for a primary photo showing one finished product, with no collages. Put the comparison second or third.

If the sizes are variations, you can attach a room shot to each size option, so the buyer sees the right scale while choosing. Etsy notes that if you have more than 20 options, you can only add photos for 20 of them, which is rarely a limit for poster sizes.

How Etsy's photo rules shape poster images

You can add up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing, and Etsy recommends photos at least 2000 pixels wide and high. The first photo should be landscape or square, which matters for a portrait poster: it needs to sit inside a square image with enough space around it. Our guide to Etsy mockup size and dimensions goes further into pixel sizes.

Thumbnails are cropped to square, portrait and landscape, and Etsy advises you to position your image so your subject is clear in all 3 views. A room shot cropped tight to the frame loses part of it in one of those crops. Transparent PNG files are not supported as listing photos, so export mockups as JPG. A video can be up to 15 seconds long and plays without sound, and a slow move toward the wall is a good way to show scale.

Here is a photo order that covers scale from every angle:

If you sell digital posters

With printable digital files, the buyer prints the poster, so what you are really selling is ratios. A digital listing can hold up to five files, each up to 20MB, and variations are not available for digital items. Your mockups should show the ratios the files support and say on the image that no print or frame is shipped.

Poster and wall art mockups in Alomations

Canvas prints are in our catalog, so a canvas listing can start from the built-in mockup library's ready product photos. Smart mockups render your design onto those photos with real shading and light, and objects in front of the design stay in front. The zoom (framing) control lets a product shot from far back fill more of the image, which is handy for a second, tighter image while the wide room shot carries the scale. You can preview each image before the run and download it. Smart mockups are free to use, and they count toward Etsy's 20 images. Our article on canvas mockups covers what those images should show.

For posters you print yourself, your own mockup library (paid plans) lets you upload your own room photos, set the print area once on the frame, and reuse it in every run. You can then print and ship those orders yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Which size should a poster mockup show?

Ideally, each size gets its own room shot. If one room shot stands in for all sizes, write the size shown on the image or in the description so the buyer knows what they are looking at.

Can I show a frame if the frame is not included?

Yes, but say clearly on the image and in the description that the frame is not included, and add one unframed image so the buyer sees exactly what arrives.

Can I use free room mockups I find online?

Every mockup comes with its own licence, and some do not allow commercial use. Read the terms before you use one. Our guide to mockup licences explains what to look for.

Will the colours in the mockup match the print?

Not exactly. Etsy converts images to the sRGB colour profile, and screens differ from one another, so a close-up photo of a real print gives the buyer the most honest view of colour and surface.
