What your first Etsy photo has to do in search results

Your first photo is the thumbnail shoppers judge in search. Here are Etsy's rules for it and the framing choices that help a small image earn the click.

Your first photo is the thumbnail shoppers see in Etsy search, so its job is to make the right buyer stop scrolling and click. To do that it has to show one finished product clearly at a small size, survive the different crops Etsy applies, and tell a shopper what the item is before they read a word of your title.

This matters most in two situations: your listings show up in search but few shoppers open them, or you sell print on demand and every listing image is a mockup. Titles, tags and attributes help get your listing into the results. The thumbnail decides whether anyone opens it.

What the thumbnail is up against

In search, your listing is one small image in a grid, surrounded by other listings for the same keyword. Shoppers usually take in the picture before the words, and Etsy says results differ from shopper to shopper (Etsy Help: how search works), so you cannot design for one fixed position. You design for a small square that has to work anywhere it lands.

Two things follow. First, detail that looks good full screen disappears at thumbnail size: thin lettering, small motifs, a print on a shirt photographed from across the room. Second, the image competes on clarity, not decoration. The thumbnail that reads in a glance tends to win the glance.

Etsy treats the main photo as part of listing quality. Its Search Visibility page checks for at least one image, a high-resolution primary photo, a primary photo showing one finished product with no collages, and a clear, well-lit primary photo (Etsy Help: search visibility). For ads, Etsy says its quality score "reflects how likely shoppers are to click on your listing" (Etsy Help: how Etsy Ads rank), which shows how much weight the click carries there.

Etsy's technical rules for the first photo

Etsy's photo guide sets the floor. "Your first listing photo should have a width and height of at least 635 pixels to avoid showing up lower in searches," and Etsy recommends listing photos with "a width and height of at least 2000 pixels or more." The first photo "should be horizontal (landscape) or square", and thumbnails need enough border to be cropped to square, portrait and landscape (Etsy Help: photo guidelines).

That last point is the one sellers miss. Etsy shows the same image in three views, and its advice is to "Position your image so your subject is clear in all 3 views used across Etsy." (Etsy Help: thumbnails) Keep the product in the centre with breathing room on every side. Since June 2026 you can preview listing thumbnails before publishing (Etsy updates), so use that preview every time.

File rules matter too. Etsy accepts .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg or .heic, but "Animated .gif files & transparent .png files are not supported", and Etsy converts images to the sRGB colour profile (Etsy Help). Export a flat image with a real background. For pixel sizes in more depth, see our guide to Etsy mockup size and dimensions.

What makes a shopper click

Once the rules are met, the click comes from how quickly the image answers three things: what the item is, what the design looks like, and whether it is meant for this shopper.

  • The product fills the frame. A shirt that takes up a small corner of a wide room shot becomes a dot in the grid. Frame closer so the product and the design are the subject.

  • The design is readable small. If the main words of a text design cannot be read at thumbnail size, the shopper sees a shirt with marks on it.

  • One product, one colour. Lead with the colour your design reads best on. Save colour swatches and size charts for later images.

  • Contrast with the background. A white mug on a white table blends in. Pick a background that separates the product's edges.

  • Believable light and texture. An image with folds, shadows and natural light earns more trust than a flat paste-on. Our list of mockup mistakes that make listings look fake covers the usual suspects.

  • A style that matches the buyer. A model shot suits fashion-led niches. A clean flat-lay suits gifts and graphic tees. See flat-lay vs model mockups.

Test it before you publish

Do a shrink test. Zoom your image out until it is about the size of a search result on your phone, then ask someone who has not seen the design what the product is. If they hesitate, frame closer or change the background.

Next, search your main keyword on Etsy and look at the grid as a shopper would. You are not there to copy anyone. You are checking whether your image would stand apart: if most results are white shirts on grey backgrounds, a warmer or darker setting may be what separates yours. After you publish, watch your shop stats. If a listing appears in search but few people open it, the thumbnail is the first thing to test, and our guide to Etsy Stats explains the numbers. Etsy's announcement of its Search Visibility page says changes "can take up to one day to reflect in search" (Etsy community announcement), so give a new image a little time before you judge it.

How Alomations builds the first image

In Alomations the first image is usually a smart mockup: your design rendered onto a product photo with real fabric folds, shading and light, so it reads as a photograph rather than a flat paste-on. The built-in mockup library has ready product photos for the catalog products, so you can list without owning a camera or a sample. For flat-lay shots there is a background picker, which helps with the contrast problem above, and a zoom (framing) control lets a product shot from far back fill more of the image, so it does not shrink to a dot in the grid.

Before the run you can preview every colour and every side, which is the moment to pick the shot that reads best small. On paid plans you can also upload your own photos to your own mockup library, set the print area once and reuse them in every run. Etsy allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing (Etsy Help: creating a listing), and smart mockups count toward the 20. The features page shows the whole listing run.

Frequently asked questions

What size should the first Etsy photo be?

Etsy asks for at least 635 pixels in width and height to avoid showing lower in search and recommends 2,000 pixels or more (Etsy Help). Square or landscape works for the first photo.

Can my first photo be a collage of several products?

Etsy's Search Visibility page checks for a primary photo showing one finished product, with no collages (Etsy Help). Put collages and colour charts further down the image set.

Should the thumbnail show the shirt on a model or laid flat?

Either can work. Choose the one where the design is largest and clearest at small size and that fits how your buyers shop.

How many photos should a listing have?

You can add up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing, per Etsy's listing guide. Use the images after the first for the back, a close-up, a colour chart and a size chart.
