The wooden items sold through print on demand are mostly flat, decorated surfaces: signs and plaques, coasters, ornaments, photo blocks and panels, keychains, puzzles and serving boards, decorated either by printing colour onto the wood or by engraving into it. Printed wood has a warm, natural look that changes slightly from piece to piece, and it suits home, gift and personalized niches far better than fast slogan humour.
This guide is for sellers who already list shirts and mugs and want a product that feels like a keepsake. Wood reads as something to keep on a shelf or hang on a wall, which changes the designs that work and the way you describe them. Knowing how each decoration method looks before you design saves you from artwork that disappears into the grain.
The wooden items you can sell through print on demand
Which items you can offer depends on the production partner, but the same handful turns up again and again in print-on-demand catalogs:
Signs and plaques: family names, house rules, home quotes, welcome signs, small desk plaques.
Coasters: sets of four or six, often with a shared theme.
Ornaments: flat wooden shapes for Christmas trees and year-round hanging decor.
Photo blocks and panels: a photo printed straight onto wood instead of paper or canvas.
Keychains and small tags: cheap to ship and easy to personalize.
Puzzles: a photo or illustration cut into pieces, usually as a gift.
Serving and cutting boards: usually engraved rather than printed. For anything that touches food, ask the production partner which finish it uses and describe it accurately.
Wall panels are worth a separate mention. A design printed on a wood panel competes with canvas and posters, and it gives your wall art a different texture at a different price point. Our guide on printing on wood with UV print or engraving goes deeper into those two methods.
How printed wood looks
Wood is never a blank white page, and that is both its charm and its main design constraint. There are three common ways to decorate it, and each gives a different finish.
UV printing on natural wood. Ink is printed onto the surface and cured with ultraviolet light. Colours sit on top of the wood, and the wood tone shows through and warms them. Whether the white parts of your design print as white depends on the printer: some lay down white ink, others leave those areas unprinted so the bare wood shows.
Laser engraving. The design is burned into the surface, giving one tone that ranges from light to dark brown, with a slight depth you can feel. There is no colour, so the artwork has to work as a single-colour drawing.
Sublimation on coated board. Many photo panels, coasters and ornaments sold as "wood" are actually hardboard with a white coating made for sublimation. Sublimation requires polyester or another synthetic material, which is why the coating is there, and the same source notes that items like ornaments are decorated by sublimation onto a coated surface. You get bright, photo-friendly colour but no visible grain. Our explainer on sublimation printing for POD sellers covers the method.
| Method | What the surface looks like | Colour | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| UV print on natural wood | Grain visible, varies piece to piece | Full colour, warmed by the wood tone | Signs, wall panels, colourful ornaments |
| Laser engraving | Design burned in, slight depth | One tone, light to dark brown | Boards, keepsakes, names and dates |
| Sublimation on coated board | Smooth white coating, no grain | Bright full colour | Photo panels, coasters, photo ornaments |
Designing artwork for wood
A design that looks crisp on a white shirt can turn muddy on pine or walnut. A few habits help:
Prefer dark, saturated colours on light wood. Pastels and pale yellows can vanish into the grain unless the printer lays down white ink first.
Do not rely on white until you know how your partner prints it.
Think in one colour for engraving. Remove gradients and soft shadows, thicken thin lines and test the artwork as pure black on white.
Leave a margin. Edges of small pieces like coasters and ornaments are where cutting tolerances show, so keep names and dates away from them.
Supply a proper print file. One provider's guidance is that "The recommended resolution for JPEG/PNG files is 300 DPI", and a JPEG does not support transparency, so transparent areas can print as white. On wood, that white box is very visible. Our guide to making a print-ready file covers the details.
Niches that suit wood
Wood works best where the buyer wants something that feels permanent and personal. Good fits include:
Home and family: family name signs, an established year, house numbers, kitchen quotes.
Weddings and anniversaries: names and dates, guest keepsakes, gifts for the couple.
Christmas and seasonal decor: ornaments, a first-Christmas keepsake, holiday signs.
Pets: name signs for a bed or bowl area, and memorial pieces offered with care.
Outdoors and cabins: lake house, camping and rustic lodge designs that match the material.
Hosting and the kitchen: engraved boards with a family name or a handwritten recipe.
Personalization carries most of these niches. Etsy lets you add up to 5 personalization fields per listing, and a text box can have a character limit from 1 to 1,024 set to fit your design, which is how you stop a long surname from running off a small coaster. Our list of personalized gift products that work well for POD has more ideas in the same spirit.
Listing wooden products on Etsy
A few Etsy settings matter more for wood than for apparel.
Category. Etsy says the category determines which sections of the marketplace your item appears in, so pick the most specific home decor or ornament category that fits.
Materials. Since March 2026, Etsy has removed the Materials tag field, and materials exist only as an attribute. Fill in the wood type there, and follow Etsy's advice to fill out both attributes and tags.
Honest descriptions. Say that grain and tone vary from piece to piece. Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover an item that does not match the listing description, so accuracy protects you as well as the buyer.
Photos. You can add up to 20 photos and 2 videos. Use some of them for scale (in a hand, on a shelf) and a close-up of the grain or the engraving depth.
Production partner. If a partner makes the item, Etsy says you must disclose that production partner in your relevant listings.
Wooden products in the Alomations catalog
The Alomations catalog includes wooden products alongside apparel, mugs, ceramic ornaments, canvas prints and an exclusive range of leather goods. Each product has its own page with a "from" price, and shipping is quoted separately, so you can see the cost before you set a retail price. Our tour of the catalog, its print methods and from prices explains how to read those pages.
Once you choose a product, a template holds its price, variations, shipping and processing profiles, and a listing run turns your design into a finished listing. When an order comes in, it arrives on the orders screen with the design and variant matched and the buyer's personalization text attached, and you fulfill it through a production partner with the item cost and shipping shown separately before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Is printed wood the same as engraved wood?
No. Printing adds colour on top of the surface, while engraving burns the design into it in a single brown tone. They suit different designs, so decide on the method before you draw.
Can white be printed on wood?
It depends on the printer. Some lay down white ink, others leave white areas unprinted so the wood shows through. Check the product details before you design around white.
Why does my wooden product look different from the mockup?
Real wood varies in grain and tone, and a mockup shows one example. Say so in your description and photos, so buyers expect a natural material rather than an exact copy.
