Personalized gift products that work well for POD

Mugs, ornaments, stockings, leather goods, canvas prints and baby clothes: where a name, date or photo adds the most, and how to price the extra work.

The products where a name, date or photo adds the most value are the ones people keep and display: mugs, ornaments, Christmas stockings, leather goods, canvas prints and baby clothes. Personalization can justify a higher price on them, but it also adds checking, risk and support work, and the price has to cover that.

This guide is for print-on-demand sellers deciding which products to make personal, especially ahead of the gifting season. A plain mug competes with every other plain mug, while a mug with a grandchild's name on it is a different purchase: the buyer cannot pick it off a shelf. Choosing the right products, and pricing the extra work honestly, decides whether personalization becomes a profit line or a pile of support messages.

What makes a product worth personalizing

A good personalized product usually ticks most of these boxes:

  • It is a gift. People pay more for a present that shows thought than for something they buy for themselves.

  • It is kept or displayed. An ornament comes out every December, a canvas hangs for years. The longer the item lives, the more the name matters.

  • The name has room. A short name or a date has to read clearly at a glance, so the product needs a calm area for it.

  • It ties to a moment. Weddings, births, first Christmases, retirements and graduations all come with a date worth printing.

  • It is easy to get right. Every personal detail is a chance for a typo, so simple layouts beat busy ones.

Mugs and ornaments are the easiest place to start: one short text field, a simple layout and a product every buyer understands. Stockings and leather goods do well in the gifting season, and our guides to knitted Christmas stockings and leather passport holders go deeper on each.

Names, dates or photos: choosing the personal detail

Names are the simplest and the most requested. The catch is length: a design that looks balanced with Mia can break with Maximilian. Plan for both ends, as covered in designing for short and long names.

Dates carry meaning for weddings, births and anniversaries. Ask buyers to write the month as a word or follow a set format, because 03/04 means different days in different countries.

Photos carry the most emotion and the most risk. Buyers send what they have, and a dark phone photo stays dark in print. Etsy lets you add one upload field per listing, where buyers can upload up to 10 files of up to 100 MB each, in .jpg, .png, .svg, .heic or .pdf.

On the Etsy side, you can add up to 5 personalization fields per listing: text boxes, lists of options (up to 30 options each) and the upload field, each set as required or optional. A text box takes a character limit between 1 and 1024, "based on your design", which is the simplest way to stop a name from overflowing the layout.

How personalization changes the price

A personalized order costs you more than a plain one, even when the blank and the print cost the same. You spend time reading and checking each order, some buyers ask for a proof, a typo means a reprint, and a returned item cannot be sold to anyone else. Price for that work, not only for the product.

There are three common ways to do it:

  1. Build it into the base price. The simplest choice when every buyer personalizes the item.

  2. Charge an add-on. Etsy supports add-on pricing only for optional text fields, at between $0.20 USD and $500 USD equivalent.

  3. Price by variation. When the option changes the work, such as one name or four, a variation can carry its own price, because price can vary by variation once you switch it on.

Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee applies to the total order amount, so a higher price raises the fee too. Run your margin with the personalized price, not the plain one.

Returns deserve a thought as well. Etsy lets you set different return and exchange policies for each physical listing, and notes that EU rules require some sellers to offer a minimum 14-day return policy on orders shipped to the EU. Check Etsy's help pages, or a qualified professional, for what applies to your shop.

Getting the buyer's text right

Most personalization problems start in the personalization box. Tell buyers exactly what to type and in what order, and show an example. Our guide to personalization instructions buyers follow has wording you can adapt. Put a sample name in your mockups that is clearly a sample, so nobody expects it on their order.

Keep the design yours. Etsy allows print-on-demand production partners as long as the items are "the seller's original design (or the buyer's customization)", and a buyer's request does not make a character, a team logo or a brand name safe to print.

How Alomations handles personalized products

In the Design Editor (paid plans), you add an editable field, such as a name or a date, to a design. The listing then reaches Etsy with personalization switched on, and when an order arrives, the buyer's text is placed into the design. Titles say Custom or Personalized when the design is personalized, and sample names stay out of the copy. A design can also hold a slot for the buyer's photo, which arrives with the order and is cropped around faces and detail before the print file is prepared. Our article on personalizable designs shows the whole flow.

Most products in the table above are in the Alomations catalog: ceramic mugs, round and heart ceramic ornaments, knitted Christmas stockings, leather passport holders and portfolios, canvas prints, baby and toddler sizes, tumblers and water bottles. Each has a from price on the catalog page, with shipping quoted separately. Orders then arrive on the orders screen with the buyer's personalization text and photos attached.

Frequently asked questions

Which personalized product is easiest to start with?

A mug or a ceramic ornament with a name. One short text field, a simple layout and a product everyone understands keep mistakes and questions to a minimum.

Should personalization cost extra?

It should be paid for somewhere, either in the base price or as an add-on. Etsy's add-on pricing works only on optional text fields, between $0.20 and $500 USD equivalent.

Can buyers send a photo through Etsy?

Yes. Add an upload field to the listing: Etsy allows one per listing, and buyers can upload up to 10 files of up to 100 MB each.

Can I print a character or team logo if the buyer asks for it?

Keep to original designs. A buyer's request does not give you the right to use someone else's character, logo or brand, and Etsy can remove listings under its Intellectual Property Policy.

You can start listing on the free plan and move to a paid plan when you want the Design Editor's personalizable fields.
