Etsy buyers expect a printed tote bag to be sturdy enough for books or groceries, to have its size stated plainly, and to carry a design that says something about the person who will use it. A tote that looks thin, gives no dimensions and has a small, logo-like print reads as a giveaway, however good the artwork is.
That gap matters because a tote competes with the free bags people already have at home. Nobody pays for a bag they could have picked up at a conference, so the listing has to show at a glance that this one is different. If you already sell shirts and mugs, the tote is a natural next product, and our guide to using one design on shirts, mugs and totes covers how to adapt artwork across them.
Size: state it, then show it
Buyers want to know what fits: a laptop, a few books, a weekly shop. Put the width, height, any gusset and the handle length in the first lines of the description, taken from your blank's spec sheet, so nobody has to scroll for them. Etsy asks sellers to "Describe the details of your item so buyers know what they're getting" (Etsy) and to describe the item clearly "in the first sentence of your description" (Etsy).
Then show the scale in photos. A tote carried on a shoulder, or packed with everyday things, answers the size question faster than numbers do. You can add up to 20 photos per listing (Etsy), so there is room for a flat shot, a carried shot and a close-up. Accuracy protects you too: Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover cases where "The item doesn't match the listing description" (Etsy).
Fabric weight: what makes a tote feel like a gift
Fabric is the first thing a buyer judges. A heavier canvas holds its shape when the bag is empty and feels like something you would give. A thin, soft cotton bag folds flat and feels promotional. Quote the fabric and weight exactly as your blank's spec sheet gives them, in the unit it uses, rather than calling the bag "heavy" or "thick".
Fill in the material attribute too. In March 2026 Etsy wrote "We've also removed the Materials tag field", so materials now live only as an attribute (Etsy updates), and Etsy's advice is to "Fill out both attributes and tags for your listings" (Etsy).
The fabric also decides the print method. DTF "can print on cotton, polyester, nylon, and blends alike" (Printify), while sublimation "requires polyester or another synthetic material" (Printify). Our guide to printing on tote bags: fabric weight and methods goes deeper into which method suits which bag.
Designs that make a tote a gift
The totes people buy as gifts are about the person carrying them. A few directions work well:
A hobby or identity. Books, gardening, coffee, a profession. The bag says "this is me" every time it is carried, and one theme can carry a whole range of bags.
A name or initials. Personalization turns a generic bag into a present. Etsy lets you add up to 5 personalization fields per listing, with a text box limit you set between 1 and 1,024 characters (Etsy).
An illustration that fills the space. A tote is a flat canvas. Artwork sized for a small chest print looks lost on it, so scale the design to the bag's print area.
A short phrase with a point of view. A joke or a line the recipient would say themselves, set in type that reads from across a room.
Keep every design original. Brand logos, characters and team names are not yours to print, however often you see them on bags.
Gift or freebie: what buyers notice
| What buyers notice | Reads as a freebie | Reads as a gift |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Thin cloth that folds flat | Heavier canvas that holds its shape |
| Size information | No dimensions in the listing | Width, height and handle length in the first lines |
| A small mark in the centre | A design scaled to the print area | |
| Design | A generic word or a logo | A phrase, picture or name about the recipient |
| Photos | One flat image | A flat lay, a carried shot and a close-up of the print |
| Gift details | Nothing mentioned | Gift wrap or a gift note option described |
Listing the tote so buyers find it
Open the title with what the item is, then the design and the recipient. Etsy's advice is to "Clearly describe your item at the beginning of the item title" (Etsy). Use tags for gift phrases: Etsy says tags "are great for aspirational or buyer-minded search terms (for example, "gift for her")" (Etsy), and you have 13 of them.
If you offer the bag in more than one colour or handle style, variations can cover it. Since September 2026 a listing can have up to three variation types, "like size, color, and style" (Etsy updates). For the first photo, show one finished bag rather than a collage, which is one of the checks on Etsy's Search Visibility page (Etsy). Our guide to choosing tote bag mockups covers the rest of the gallery.
Totes in the Alomations catalog
Tote bags are part of the Alomations catalog, alongside shirts, ceramic mugs, ornaments and canvas prints. Each product has its own page with a "from" price, and shipping is quoted separately, so you can work out the margin before you list. Our overview of the catalog's products, print methods and from prices explains how to read it.
Because one design can go onto several products, a tote can share artwork with the shirt and mug versions of the same idea. Designs come back print-ready at 12 inches and 300 DPI as a transparent PNG with an SVG alongside, and the built-in mockup library has ready product photos for catalog products. When an order arrives, it pulls in with the design and variant matched and the buyer's personalization text attached, ready to fulfill through our production partners.
Frequently asked questions
What fabric should a printed tote be?
That depends on the print method. Cotton and cotton canvas suit DTF, which "can print on cotton, polyester, nylon, and blends alike" (Printify), while sublimation needs polyester. Whatever you choose, state the fabric and its weight from the spec sheet.
Should I offer personalization on totes?
If the design has a natural place for a name or initials, yes. Personalized bags work as gifts because they are clearly for one person. Set the character limit to what fits your layout, and show a sample name in the mockup.
Can I list the same design on a tote and a shirt?
Yes, as separate listings. A tote and a shirt sit in different categories, and Etsy says "The category determines which sections of Etsy's marketplace your item appears in" (Etsy), so each product deserves its own title, tags and photos.
How should I price a tote?
Start from your product cost and shipping, then add Etsy's fees and your margin. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the order total, including shipping and gift wrap if you charge for them (Etsy).
