Printing on tote bags: fabric weight and methods

A tote's canvas decides more of the print result than the file does. How weight, weave and colour change DTF, DTG, sublimation and screen prints, and which designs suit them.

Tote bag printing works best when the method matches the fabric: cotton canvas takes DTF, DTG and screen printing, while sublimation needs a light-coloured polyester tote. The heavier and coarser the canvas, the more it rewards bold shapes and solid lettering over hairlines and soft fades.

This guide is for Etsy sellers adding totes next to their shirts and mugs, and for anyone whose tote print came back rougher than the mockup promised. A tote's weave, thickness and colour all show through the print, so one file can look crisp on one bag and grainy on another.

How canvas weight changes the result

Totes range from thin cotton bags that fold into a pocket to thick canvas that stands up on its own. Makers state weight in ounces or in grams per square metre, so compare the spec sheet of the exact bag you plan to sell rather than trusting a label like "heavy".

A lighter tote usually has a finer, flatter weave, so fine detail tends to survive better. The trade-off is drape: a thin bag creases when carried, and a large print bends with it.

A heavier canvas holds its shape, so the print stays flat and readable on the shoulder. Its weave is coarser, though, and small text and thin lines break up across the raised ridges first. On any weight, keep artwork clear of thick seams, the bottom gusset and the handle stitching.

How weave and colour change the print

With DTG, the "ink absorbs into the fibers, so the print feels part of the shirt" (a print provider's DTF vs DTG comparison). On a tote the print takes on the grain of the cloth, which suits a rustic design and looks grainy on a photo-like one. DTF is "a thin, smooth layer you can feel sitting on top of the fabric" (same source), so it bridges the weave better but reads as a layer on the bag.

Colour matters as much as weave:

  • Natural canvas is off-white and often slightly flecked. Without a white layer underneath, colours print a little warmer and softer, and white in your design depends on the printer adding white ink, so ask your provider.

  • Black and dark totes need white underneath. DTG uses "a pretreatment coat and a white ink underbase" (provider comparison), and even then a print on a dark garment "may be less vibrant" (a provider's DTG vs DTF guide). DTF carries its own white layer in the film, so it works on any fabric colour (provider help on print methods).

  • White polyester totes are the only group that suits sublimation.

DTF and DTG

DTF "prints a design onto a special transfer film, coats it with adhesive powder, and then heat-presses it onto the garment", and it "can print on cotton, polyester, nylon, and blends alike" (provider comparison). One provider notes that a DTF print "has a plastic feel and might be slightly stiff initially" (provider help comparing print methods). On a bag that shows up as a stiff patch, so open shapes with some negative space sit better than one huge solid block. Our guide to DTF printing covers the process.

DTG "needs 100% cotton or high-cotton garments" (same comparison), so it fits cotton canvas and not polyester bags.

Screen printing and embroidery

In screen printing, "each color requires a separate screen", and it "Has minimum order requirements, usually between five to 100 units" (a provider's screen printing guide). For a shop that sells one tote at a time, screen printing only makes sense for batch orders, such as matching totes for a wedding party, which we compare in screen printing vs DTF for small Etsy orders.

Embroidery colours "are limited to the available thread shades" (provider help on print methods), and "Large and heavy embroidery on thin fabrics can sometimes cause the fabric to curve or warp slightly" (provider help comparing print methods), so heavier canvas is the better base.

Sublimation

Sublimation "requires polyester or another synthetic material" (provider help on print methods). The maker of one sublimation-style system sets the bar at "at least 75% polyester" on "white or light-colored fabrics" and says its designs "will not transfer to 100% cotton" (Cricut Help). So a cotton tote is not a sublimation product, while a white polyester one carries photos and gradients well. See sublimation printing explained.

Designs that suit totes

  • Bold over fine. Thick strokes and solid letters survive canvas texture, while hairlines and tiny type go first, as our guide to thin lines and small text explains.

  • Short phrases. A tote is read from a few steps away, so one large line beats a paragraph.

  • Limited palettes on natural canvas. Two or three colours chosen for a warm off-white base look deliberate.

  • Transparent backgrounds. JPEG does not support transparency, so transparent areas can print as white (provider file guidelines). On natural canvas that white box is impossible to miss, so send a PNG.

  • Full resolution at print size. "The recommended resolution for JPEG/PNG files is 300 DPI" (provider file requirements), at the size the design will print, inside the provider's print area for that bag.

Listing a tote honestly on Etsy

Name the fabric. In a March 2026 update Etsy said "We've also removed the Materials tag field", so materials now live as an attribute (Etsy Help: recent updates), and Etsy advises you to "Fill out both attributes and tags for your listings" (Etsy Help: listing attributes).

Add a close-up of the canvas texture and a photo of the bag carried, so buyers see both weave and size. Etsy recommends photos "at least 2000 pixels" wide and high (Etsy Help: photo tips). If a partner prints your totes, "you must disclose that production partner in your relevant listings" (Etsy Help: creating a listing).

Totes in the Alomations catalog

Tote bags are part of the Alomations catalog, alongside apparel, mugs, tumblers and canvas prints. Each product on the catalog shows a "from" price, with shipping quoted separately, so you know the product cost before you set your Etsy price. Production partners print the orders, and production for US orders is in the US. See the catalog: products, print methods and from prices.

Every design comes back print-ready at 12 inches and 300 DPI as a transparent PNG with an SVG alongside, in a light and a dark version so one design reads on light canvas and on black. A tote order arrives with the design and variant matched, and you fulfill it from the orders screen, where item cost and shipping are shown separately before you pay from your balance.

Frequently asked questions

Can you sublimate a cotton tote bag?

No. Sublimation needs polyester or another synthetic. For cotton canvas, use DTF or DTG, or choose a light polyester tote.

Which print method lasts longest on a tote?

One provider says screen prints "can last decades" (screen printing guide) and estimates DTF at 50 to 100 washes before wear shows (DTF vs DTG comparison). Totes are usually washed less often than shirts.

Is heavier canvas always better for printing?

No. It keeps the print flat, but its coarser weave breaks up fine detail, so delicate line art suits a lighter weave.

What file should I send for a tote print?

A transparent PNG at 300 DPI at the real print size, never a JPEG.
