Screen printing vs DTF for small Etsy orders

Screen printing needs screens and minimums, DTF needs neither. We compare setup, look and durability and explain which method fits one-off Etsy orders.

For one-off and small Etsy orders, DTF is usually the better fit: there are no screens to prepare and no minimum order, so a single shirt is as practical to produce as a batch. Screen printing pays off when you print the same simple design in bulk, because its setup work is spread across many identical pieces.

This guide is for sellers deciding how their shirts get made: printing at home, working with a local print shop or using print on demand. An Etsy shop sells one item at a time, in whatever size and colour each buyer picks, and that pattern decides the method more than anything else.

How each method works

Screen printing pushes ink through a stencil stretched on a mesh screen, and "each color requires a separate screen, requiring more time and effort to set up," as one print provider's guide to screen printing puts it. A three-colour design means three screens, lined up with each other, before the first shirt is printed.

DTF (direct-to-film) "prints a design onto a special transfer film, coats it with adhesive powder, and then heat-presses it onto the garment" (DTF and DTG comparison). The whole design, in every colour, is printed in one pass, and a white ink layer on the film lets the transfer work on any fabric colour (print method overview). Our explainer on what DTF printing is walks through each step.

Setup and minimums: why one-offs rarely suit screen printing

The same screen printing guide says the method "Has minimum order requirements, usually between five to 100 units," and that it suits bulk orders of simple designs with 1 to 4 colours, while the setup makes it inefficient for small runs and complex designs (screen printing guide). Minimums differ from shop to shop, so ask your printer for theirs. DTF, like DTG, runs "with no setup fees or minimum orders" (DTF and DTG comparison).

Now picture an ordinary week of orders: a medium in sage, a 2XL in black with a different design, a shirt with a child's name on the back. Each order is a run of one. To screen print them you would either set up screens for every single order or print stock in advance and hope you guessed the sizes and colours right. Printing ahead also means paying for shirts before anyone has bought them.

DTF matches how Etsy orders arrive. The design is printed on film when the order comes in, pressed onto the size and colour the buyer chose, and shipped. Personalized orders, where every piece carries different text, are far simpler this way.

Colours, fabrics and the finished look

Screen printing lays thick ink on top of the fabric, and screen prints "can last decades" (screen printing guide). It is at its best with bold, flat colours. Detailed, many-colour artwork is harder, because every colour needs its own screen.

DTF prints the whole design in full colour from one file, and "can print on cotton, polyester, nylon, and blends alike" (DTF and DTG comparison). The trade-off is feel: a thin, smooth layer sits on top of the fabric and is firmer than DTG until it softens over the first few washes. Another provider notes that a DTF print "has a plastic feel and might be slightly stiff initially" and that its breathability is "relatively low" (print method notes). That stiffness shows most on large solid blocks of colour, so open designs, lettering and outlined graphics suit DTF well.

On durability, one provider estimates that DTF "Holds up for 50-100 washes before fading, cracking, or peeling shows" (DTF and DTG comparison), and another warns that a DTF print "might develop small cracks if the garment is washed in hot water" (print method notes). Care instructions matter, so include them with every order. Our guide to washing and caring for DTF printed shirts has wording you can reuse.

When screen printing still makes sense

Screen printing is not wrong for Etsy. It fits a different kind of order.

  • Group orders. A family reunion, a team or a bachelorette party ordering many shirts with one design spreads the setup across the whole group. Sizes can usually vary within the order, because the screens are made for the design. See our family reunion shirt ideas and ordering timeline.

  • A proven design you stock yourself. If you ship from your own inventory, a bulk run of a steady seller can make sense.

  • Simple marks where thick ink is the appeal. A one-colour logo or slogan with a heavy, long-lasting print.

If a print shop produces your items, Etsy requires you to say so: "If you work with a production partner, you must disclose that production partner in your relevant listings" (Etsy Help: creating a listing). Set a processing time that covers the shop's turnaround, since Etsy defines processing time as "how much time you need to get an order ready to ship" (Etsy Help: processing times).

How Alomations prints Etsy orders

Alomations is set up for orders of one. Apparel in our catalog is printed with DTF, with sublimation for products that need it, and production for US orders is in the US. There is no batch to fill: each order is printed after it arrives.

Orders come in resolved, with the design and variant matched and the buyer's personalization text and photos attached, which is what makes per-order personalization workable. On the orders screen you see the item cost and shipping separately before paying from your balance, the row shows which print centre has the order, and the partner cannot mark it shipped without a tracking number, which is posted back to Etsy where Etsy allows it. If you prefer to print an order yourself, you can. Fulfillment is open on every plan, Free included.

Frequently asked questions

Is DTF as durable as screen printing?

Screen prints can last decades. One provider estimates DTF at 50 to 100 washes before fading, cracking or peeling shows, and hot washes can crack it, so care instructions make a real difference.

Can I sell screen printed shirts on Etsy?

Yes, as long as the design is your own. If a print shop makes them, disclose it as a production partner and set a processing time that covers its turnaround.

Does DTF work on black shirts?

Yes. The white ink layer on the film lets a DTF transfer work on any fabric colour, dark shirts included. Our DTF vs DTG comparison covers how it differs from printing straight onto the shirt.

What is a DTF gang sheet?

A gang sheet is one sheet of transfer film filled with several designs printed together. Read more in what a DTF gang sheet is.
