Wash a DTF printed shirt inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle, skip bleach and fabric softener, air dry or tumble dry on low, and never iron directly over the print. Heat is the main enemy of a DTF transfer, so good DTF wash care comes down to keeping the print cool and protecting it from friction.

This guide is for sellers who sell DTF shirts and want buyers to get the longest life from them, and for anyone who needs a short care note for a listing or a packaging card. A buyer who washes a new shirt on hot and finds a crack will usually blame the print, not the wash, so clear care instructions protect your reviews as much as the shirt.

Why DTF prints need their own care

DTF "prints a design onto a special transfer film, coats it with adhesive powder, and then heat-presses it onto the garment", in the words of one print provider's comparison. The result is a thin layer that sits on top of the fabric rather than soaking into it. That is why DTF works on cotton, polyester and blends alike, and also why it reacts to heat and friction differently from the fabric underneath. What DTF printing is and how it works explains the process in full.

A new DTF print can feel a little stiff. One provider describes a "plastic feel" that "might be slightly stiff initially" (provider guide), and another notes that the layer softens over the first few washes. Tell buyers that, so the feel of a new shirt is not mistaken for a defect.

How long a print lasts depends heavily on care. One print provider estimates that a DTF print "Holds up for 50-100 washes before fading, cracking, or peeling shows" (provider comparison). Treat that as a provider's estimate, not a promise to make to your buyers.

How to wash a DTF printed shirt

  1. Turn the shirt inside out. The print rubs less against the drum and the other clothes in the load.

  2. Use cold water. A DTF print "might develop small cracks if the garment is washed in hot water" (provider guide). Follow the garment's own label where it sets a limit: the Comfort Colors 1717 spec sheet says "Maximum washing temperature 30C, inside out, with like colors" (Comfort Colors 1717 spec sheet).

  3. Choose a gentle cycle and a mild detergent. Less agitation means less friction on the edges of the transfer, where wear usually starts.

  4. Skip bleach and fabric softener. Both are harsher on a printed layer than a plain wash needs to be.

  5. Wash with similar garments. Zips, hooks and heavy fabrics such as denim scrape against the print.

Drying, ironing and storage

Air drying is the gentlest option. If you use a dryer, choose low heat and take the shirt out promptly. Heat is what bonded the transfer to the fabric in the first place, so repeated high heat works against it.

Do not iron directly on the print. If the shirt needs ironing, turn it inside out or place a cloth between the iron and the design, and keep the hot plate off the printed area. Some blanks say not to iron at all: the same Comfort Colors sheet says "Do not iron." Avoid dry cleaning as well.

Fold shirts with the print on the inside, so the design does not rub against other clothes in the drawer.

A short care note for listings and packaging

Buyers rarely read a long care section, so give them a short version in two places: the listing description and, if you can, the package. Etsy asks sellers to "Describe the details of your item so buyers know what they're getting" (Etsy Help), and care belongs in those details. How to write an Etsy description buyers actually read shows where it fits.

A version you can copy:

  • Wash inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle.

  • No bleach and no fabric softener.

  • Tumble dry low or hang to dry.

  • Do not iron directly on the print.

  • The print softens after the first few washes.

Put it near the end of the description, after fabric and fit, under a short heading such as "Care". If you ship orders yourself, or your production partner offers inserts, print the same five lines on a small card. For a garment with its own limit, such as the 30°C maximum on the Comfort Colors 1717 sheet, add that line to those listings.

When a buyer reports cracking or peeling

Ask for a photo, and ask how the shirt was washed and dried, politely and without blame. Cracks after a hot wash or high-heat drying point to care, while edges lifting on the first wear more likely point to the press. Either way, replacing an item after a reasonable complaint often costs less than a poor review. Why prints crack or peel goes into the causes, and quality checks for print on demand orders covers what to inspect when a sample or an order arrives.

How Alomations prints apparel

Apparel in the Alomations catalog is printed with DTF, with sublimation for the products that need it, and production for US orders is in the US. The range covers Gildan, Bella+Canvas and Comfort Colors, including the Gildan 5000, 64000, 18000, 18500 and 5400, the Bella+Canvas 3001 and 6400, and the Comfort Colors 1717 and 1566. Each product shows a "from" price on the catalog page, for example the Gildan 5000 from $6.89 and the Bella+Canvas 3001 from $8.40, as read on October 17, 2026, with shipping quoted separately.

When a listing run writes your description, its fabric claims match the materials in your template, so the care note you add sits next to accurate fabric details. Orders go to production partners from the orders screen on every plan, Free included.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a DTF printed shirt in the dryer?

Yes, on low heat. Air drying is gentler, and high heat is the thing to avoid.

Why does a new DTF shirt feel stiff?

A new DTF print can feel slightly stiff and plastic, and it softens over the first few washes. That is normal for the method, not a defect.

How many washes does a DTF print last?

It depends on the printer and on care. One provider estimates 50 to 100 washes before fading, cracking or peeling shows. Cold washes and low heat give the print its best chance.

Can you iron over a DTF print?

Not directly. Iron the shirt inside out or with a cloth between the iron and the design, and skip ironing entirely where the garment's label says so.
