Why prints crack or peel and how to prevent it

Why DTF, DTG, sublimation and vinyl prints crack or peel, which causes come from washing, the press or the file, and what a seller can change.

Prints crack or peel when the bond between the print and the fabric breaks down, most often because of hot washing, high dryer heat or an iron, a transfer that was not pressed or cured properly, or a design with large solid blocks and fragile details. You cannot control a buyer's washing machine, but you can control the design file, the blank, the print method, the placement and the care instructions, and that is where prevention starts.

This matters because print cracking usually shows up weeks after delivery, in a message or a review. Etsy counts "a shop's average review rating" among the customer service factors in search (Etsy announcement), and Star Seller needs an average rating of 4.8 or higher (Etsy Star Seller). Knowing which causes are yours to fix keeps you from blaming the wrong thing.

How each print method wears

Each method attaches colour to fabric differently, so each one ages differently.

  • DTF (direct-to-film). The design is printed on film, coated with adhesive powder and heat-pressed onto the garment (a print provider's DTF and DTG guide). It sits on top as a thin layer, so cracking and peeling are its typical signs of wear. That provider estimates it "Holds up for 50-100 washes before fading, cracking, or peeling shows", and another notes it "might develop small cracks if the garment is washed in hot water" (a second provider's guide).

  • DTG (direct-to-garment). Water-based ink goes into the fabric and "absorbs into the fibers". The first provider describes it as "Lasts 50+ washes with proper care before color fades gradually" (DTF and DTG guide), so its usual sign of age is fading rather than peeling.

  • Sublimation. "The printing method uses dyes, so the design becomes a part of the fabric" (a provider's all-over print guide). There is no layer on top to crack, but it needs polyester and cannot print white.

  • HTV (heat transfer vinyl). Vinyl is "attached on top of a base material using adhesive" (Cricut's Infusible Ink guide), so like DTF it can lift at the edges once the bond weakens.

  • Screen printing. Thick ink sits on top of the fabric, and screen prints "can last decades" (a provider's screen printing guide), though the setup makes it a poor fit for one-off orders.

Our guide to DTF printing explains the process step by step, and HTV vs DTF transfers compares the two layered methods.

What you can influence as a seller

The design file

A large solid shape becomes a large stiff patch in DTF, and a stiff patch is what cracks when the shirt stretches. Breaking a solid area with texture, a distressed finish or small gaps keeps it more flexible. At the other extreme, hairlines and tiny isolated dots give the adhesive very little to hold, so they are often the first pieces to lift. Our article on thin lines and small text shows what survives printing.

Resolution affects how clean the edges look. One provider says "The recommended resolution for JPEG/PNG files is 300 DPI" (a provider's file guide). Use a transparent PNG and clean up faint, half-transparent pixels around the edges, which can print as a thin, weak fringe.

The blank and the method

Match the method to the fibre. DTG "needs 100% cotton or high-cotton garments" (DTF and DTG guide), sublimation "requires polyester or another synthetic material" (a provider's print methods guide), and "DTF can print on cotton, polyester, nylon, and blends alike" (DTF and DTG guide). A method used on the wrong fabric looks weak from the first wear.

Placement

Keep the design on flat fabric, away from side seams, collar ribbing and sleeve seams. A print that crosses a seam bends at the same spot every time the shirt is worn.

Care instructions

Hot water, dryer heat and irons are the buyer-side causes, so tell buyers how to wash the shirt. Blank makers publish their own care rules: the Comfort Colors 1717 spec sheet says "Maximum washing temperature 30C, inside out, with like colors" and "Do not iron" (Comfort Colors 1717 spec sheet). Put the same advice in your listing description. Our DTF care guide has wording you can adapt.

What you cannot control, and how to respond

Heat, pressure and time at the press belong to whoever prints the order. What you can do is order a sample of each product you sell, wash it the way a buyer would, and look at it again after a few washes. If a buyer reports peeling soon after delivery, ask for a photo, compare it with your sample and raise it with the printer.

The refund decision is yours: "Each Etsy seller is responsible for their own policies regarding refunds, exchanges, and returns" (Etsy on returns). If you refund through Shop Manager, "your Etsy transaction and processing fees for the refunded transactions are automatically refunded" (Etsy on refunds). Our guide to damaged or misprinted POD orders walks through the reply.

How Alomations handles the print side

Our catalog products are printed with DTF for apparel, plus sublimation for products that need it, and production for US orders is in the US. The apparel range includes Gildan 5000, 64000, 18000, 18500 and 5400, Bella+Canvas 3001 and 6400, and Comfort Colors 1717 and 1566, with "from" prices for each product on the catalog page.

The files start right: every design is print-ready at 12 inches and 300 DPI as a transparent PNG with an SVG alongside. Light and dark versions come from one design, so a black shirt gets a version built for dark fabric.

On the orders screen, an Etsy order arrives with the design and variant already matched. You see item cost and shipping separately before paying from your balance, the row shows which print centre has the order, and the partner cannot mark an order shipped without a tracking number, which is posted back to Etsy where Etsy allows it. If you prefer, you can print and ship an order yourself. Fulfillment is open on every plan, Free included, and support answers in English and Turkish.

Frequently asked questions

How many washes should a DTF print last?

One provider estimates 50 to 100 washes before fading, cracking or peeling shows. That figure assumes reasonable care, and hot washing shortens it.

Is it normal for a DTF print to feel stiff at first?

Yes. One provider describes a DTF print as having "a plastic feel" that "might be slightly stiff initially", and another says it softens over the first few washes.

Can sublimation prints crack?

Sublimation dye becomes part of the polyester fabric, so there is no separate layer to crack or peel. Its limits are different: it needs polyester, and white cannot be printed.

Should I refund a buyer whose print cracked?

That is your policy to set. Ask how the shirt was washed and for a photo, then decide case by case. Weigh the cost of a replacement or refund against an unhappy buyer and a possible poor review.
