A good Etsy description tells the buyer exactly what they are getting in the first sentence, then answers the next questions (fit, material, care, personalization, shipping) in short labelled blocks they can scan. Etsy's own advice points the same way: "Clearly describe your item in the first sentence of your description."
This matters most for print-on-demand apparel and gifts, where buyers have real questions about fit, fabric and delivery and may leave rather than send a message. A description that answers those questions before they are asked also protects you later: Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover a case where "The item doesn't match the listing description."
What the first sentence has to do
Etsy puts the test simply: "A person should be able to read the first sentence and know exactly what you're selling." Name the product, the style and the design in plain words, in that order.
Weak: "Looking for a gift they'll love? This one is special."
Clear: "Heavyweight garment-dyed cotton t-shirt with a hand-lettered Coffee First design across the chest."
The weak version could describe anything in your shop. The clear one tells a buyer arriving from search that the click was right, which is the description's first job. Leave your shop story, greetings and sale announcements out of the opening. Your story belongs in the shop's About section, which Etsy also recommends filling in because Google "likes to see your expertise and trustworthiness as a seller".
Plain sentences have one more advantage. Etsy machine-translates listings automatically for shoppers in other languages, and short, literal sentences survive translation better than slang and wordplay.
Keywords: write them the way a person would
Etsy's guidance is to "Use keywords that you think shoppers will search to find your items" "but avoid repeating the same phrases over and over again." Put your main phrase once in the first sentence and let related words appear where they naturally belong: "heavyweight", "unisex", "personalized", the occasion.
Etsy names titles and tags among the search factors sellers control, so that is where your search terms do their main work. For the detail, read how to write Etsy titles that rank. You will also see advice about a required description length or a "first 160 characters" rule. Neither appears in Etsy's help articles, so write for the buyer and stop when the questions are answered.
A structure that answers buyer questions in order
Buyers read a description top to bottom only until they find what they came for. Put the blocks in the order the questions come up.
| Block | The buyer's question | What to write |
|---|---|---|
| First sentence | What exactly is this? | Product, style and design in plain words |
| Fit and sizing | Will it fit me? | The fit in words and where the size chart is |
| Material | What is it made of? | Fibre content per colour, from the blank's spec sheet |
| How is the design applied? | The print method and how it feels | |
| Personalization | How do I add my text? | What to type, in which box, and how you use it |
| Care | How do I wash it? | Short care steps for the blank and the print |
| Processing and shipping | When will it arrive? | Made to order, and where to see the delivery estimate |
Start each block with a plain label such as "Fit:" or "Care:" so a skimmer on a phone can jump straight to it.
Fit and sizing
Describe the fit in words (unisex, classic, relaxed, fitted) and say that the size chart is in the photos. Our guide on how to build a size chart for Etsy apparel listings covers the measurements and the image itself.
Material: be exact for every colour
Fibre content can change by colour within one style. Gildan's US spec sheet lists the 5000 as "5.3-ounce, 100% US cotton", but Ash is 99/1 cotton/polyester, Sport Grey and the Antique colours are 90/10, and the heathers are 50/50. If your listing offers heathers, "100% cotton" is wrong for some of the colours you sell. Write it the way it is: "100% cotton (heather colours are a cotton and polyester blend)."
Fill in the material attribute as well. In a March 2026 update, Etsy removed the Materials tag field, so materials now live only as an attribute.
Care
Use the blank maker's instructions where you have them. The Comfort Colors 1717 sheet says "Maximum washing temperature 30C, inside out, with like colors." and "Do not iron." For transfer prints, one print provider notes that a DTF print "might develop small cracks if the garment is washed in hot water." "Wash cold, inside out" is a cautious line for most printed shirts.
Personalization
Etsy lets you add up to 5 personalization fields per listing, with a character limit you choose for text boxes. The detailed instructions belong in the personalization field itself. The description only needs one line that tells the buyer what you will do with their text, for example "We print the name exactly as typed." Our guide to writing Etsy personalization instructions buyers follow goes further.
Processing and shipping
Your processing time lives in your processing profile, and buyers see a delivery estimate at checkout. Avoid writing a fixed number of days in the description: if you later change the profile, the description becomes wrong. "Made to order, see the estimated delivery date at checkout" stays true.
Disclosures that belong in the listing
If a production partner prints your items, Etsy says you must disclose that production partner in your relevant listings, and buyers can also see your partners in your shop's About section. A short line in the description, such as "Printed to order by our production partner", makes it plain for buyers who read every word. Our guide to production partners on Etsy explains what to declare and where.
If you prompted the design with AI, Etsy is just as clear: "Seller-prompted AI creations must disclose the use of AI." Keep that disclosure honest and easy to see.
How Alomations writes the description for you
Every Alomations listing run writes a buyer-intent title within Etsy's 140 characters, all 13 tags and a description, built from your design and the template behind it. The copy follows the template's facts: fabric claims match the template's materials, a long-sleeve shirt is never called a "tee", titles say Custom or Personalized when the design is personalized, and sample names from a personalized design stay out of the copy. Etsy listing attributes are filled from the product, and the run publishes live in your shop or saves an Etsy draft, depending on one setting.
For listings that are already live, Update SEO in the listings manager rewrites the title, tags and description of a live listing, and the first rewrite for each listing is free. Each live listing also gets a score from ten checks, with the fix attached to each one. More on the method in how Alomations writes titles, 13 tags and descriptions, and the rest of the toolset on our features page.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an Etsy description be?
Etsy's help articles do not set a length. Make it long enough to answer fit, material, care, personalization and shipping, with the most important answer in the first sentence.
Should I repeat my tags in the description?
Use the important phrases naturally, once or twice. Etsy advises against repeating the same phrases over and over.
Does the description help with Google?
Etsy's advice on being found through Google includes describing the item clearly in the first sentence of the description. That same sentence is what a buyer reads first, so one habit serves both.
Will buyers in other countries understand my description?
Etsy translates listings automatically, and manual translations you add override the automatic ones. Short, literal sentences translate best.
