Printing on wood: UV print or engraving?

UV printing adds full colour to wood, while engraving burns the design in a single tone. Here is how to choose between them and which designs suit each.

UV printing lays full-colour ink on the surface of the wood, so it suits illustrations, photos and colourful lettering, while engraving burns the design into the wood in a single tone, so it suits bold line art, names and monograms. Choose the method from the design: if it needs colour, print it, and if it reads in one colour and should feel carved in, engrave it.

This is for sellers adding wooden products, such as signs, coasters, ornaments, keepsake boxes or plaques, next to their shirts and mugs. Wood suits personalized gifts, and the two methods look so different that a design matched to the wrong one is an easy way to disappoint a buyer. For the wider question of methods across a whole shop, see choosing a print method for each product in your shop.

How UV printing on wood works

A UV printer jets ink onto the wood and cures it straight away with ultraviolet light, so the ink sets as a thin layer on the surface instead of soaking in. That gives you:

  • Full colour, including gradients and photographs.

  • A choice about the grain. Printed straight onto bare wood, colours mix with the wood tone and the grain shows through. Many UV printers can lay down white ink first, which keeps colours brighter on darker wood.

  • A smooth, slightly raised layer you can feel on the surface.

The trade-off is that the ink sits on top. On a surface that gets handled or wiped often, a print can wear sooner than a design cut into the wood, so ask your provider how their finish holds up on that specific product.

You will also come across a third route: sublimation onto specially coated wood blanks. Sublimation "requires polyester or another synthetic material" (Printify on print methods), so it works only on wood that has been coated for it, never on bare wood.

How engraving on wood works

A laser engraver burns away a thin layer of wood wherever the design is dark. The mark comes out darker than the surrounding wood and slightly recessed, so you can feel the design with a fingertip. A few things follow from that:

  • The colour comes from the wood itself. Pale, even-grained woods show the most contrast, while dark or busy-grained woods make the design harder to read.

  • There is no ink layer, so there is nothing on the surface to scratch off.

  • Shades of grey do not exist as such. The engraver turns them into patterns of dots or lines, which works for some photos and looks muddy on others.

  • No two pieces of wood are identical, so two engravings of the same file will differ slightly. Say so in the listing.

Leather follows a similar logic, covered in engraving and printing on leather goods.

Design styles that suit each method

Designs for UV print

  • Watercolour and painted illustrations, where soft colour is the point.

  • Photo products, such as a pet portrait or a family photo on a plaque.

  • Bright, multi-colour lettering and patterns.

  • Designs that account for the wood: if no white ink goes down, pale colours almost disappear on natural wood, so test light tones on a sample first.

Designs for engraving

  • Bold line art and silhouettes with clear edges.

  • Names, dates and short quotes in fonts with even, sturdy strokes. Hairline serifs and tiny script lose detail, the same problem described in thin lines and small text.

  • Monograms, simple line maps and emblems you drew yourself.

  • Black-and-white artwork in which everything black becomes a burn and everything white stays wood.

If one design idea has to work both ways, make two files: a colour version for print and a simplified line version for engraving. Do not expect one file to serve both.

Preparing files and listings for wooden products

For UV print, prepare the file like any other print file. Printify recommends 300 DPI for JPEG and PNG files (Printify file requirements), and Printful advises that the file be "sized to match the actual print dimensions to ensure DPI is calculated correctly" (Printful file guidelines). Use PNG when the background should stay clear: JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas can print as white (same Printful page). For engraving, vector art keeps edges crisp at any size, and vector or raster for POD designs explains the difference.

The listing has to match the finish. Etsy asks you to "Describe the details of your item so buyers know what they're getting" (Etsy's listing guide), and Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover a case where "The item doesn't match the listing description" (Etsy Purchase Protection). Write "UV printed" or "laser engraved" in the description, show the real wood colour in your photos, and never use a full-colour mockup for an engraved product. If a production partner makes the item, Etsy requires you to disclose that partner in the relevant listings (Etsy on production partners). For names and dates, Etsy lets you add up to 5 personalization fields per listing (Etsy on personalization).

Wooden products in Alomations

The Alomations catalog includes wooden products, next to an exclusive range of leather goods and the usual apparel, mugs and ornaments. Each product is listed with a "from" price on the catalog page, and shipping is quoted separately. Before you design for a wooden product, look at it in the catalog, ask our support team how it is decorated if the page leaves you unsure, and order a sample of your own design. Ordering samples of your own products lists what to check when it arrives.

On the design side, every Alomations design comes back print-ready at 12 inches and 300 DPI (3,600 pixels on the long side), as a transparent PNG with an SVG alongside, so you have a vector file to start from as well as the PNG. On paid plans, the Design Editor can redraw flat art as vector, remove a background in one click and add outlines, which helps when you turn a colour design into a clean line version. A listing run then turns the design into a finished Etsy listing with mockups, a title, 13 tags and a description.

Frequently asked questions

Can UV printing put white on dark wood?

Many UV printers can print white ink, which is how light colours stay visible on dark wood. It depends on the printer, so ask your provider before you design light-on-dark artwork.

Which wood engraves best?

Pale, even-grained woods give the clearest result, because an engraving is only as visible as the difference between burnt and unburnt wood. Dark woods and strong grain make fine detail harder to read.

Is engraving more durable than UV print?

An engraving has no ink layer on the surface, so there is nothing to scratch off. A UV print can wear where the surface is handled often. For pieces that mostly hang on a wall or sit on a shelf, wear matters less.

Can I offer the same design printed and engraved?

Yes, with two files and honest photos of each version. Separate listings are often clearer for buyers than one listing with a finish option, because the two products look so different.
