There is no set time for a first Etsy sale: a new shop has no reviews, no sales history and only a few listings, so it takes a while to be found in search and to earn a buyer's trust. If you spend the wait finishing the shop, fixing listings and bringing in your own traffic, you are ready when the first order arrives.

This is for sellers who have just opened a shop and are watching for the first order, especially print on demand beginners. Usually the issue is time rather than a mistake, and there is useful work to do in the meantime.

Why the first sale takes time

In a new shop, each step between publishing a listing and a buyer finding it takes a little time.

  • Getting into search. Etsy says a published listing can take up to 48 hours to appear in search results and categories (Etsy's listing guide).

  • Relevance. "Search results are ordered by how relevant the items are to what you search for" (Etsy on search results). A shop with few listings matches fewer searches.

  • Quality and service signals. Etsy calls listing quality "an important factor in getting found in Etsy search" and names titles, tags, attributes, quality and customer service among the factors sellers control (Etsy on search ranking). On the service side it looks at "a shop's average review rating, message response rate, and case rate" (Etsy announcement). In a new shop most of these are still blank.

  • Buyer trust. Buying from a shop with no reviews is a small risk for a shopper. Clear photos, a complete About section and plain policies close part of that gap.

  • Search differs per shopper. Etsy says search results differ from shopper to shopper (Etsy on search ranking). Not seeing your listing in your own search does not mean nobody sees it.

What to watch while you wait: views or sales

The most useful question during the wait is not "do I have a sale" but "are my listings being seen". If your listings get no views in Etsy Stats, the problem is most likely findability: titles, tags, category or the number of listings. If they get views but no favourites or orders, the problem is persuasion: the first photo, the price, the shipping cost or the description.

Our article on why Etsy listings get no views covers the first case, and Etsy Stats explained shows how to read the numbers. After an edit, give it time: Etsy says changes "can take up to one day to reflect in search" (Etsy announcement).

A week-by-week plan while you wait

The plan starts in the week you open the shop. The weeks are a guide rather than a rule, and the order matters more than the dates.

WeekFocusWhat to do
1Finish the shopAbout section, return policy, production partner details, logo and banner
2Audit the listingsCompare each listing with the checks on Etsy's Search Visibility page
3Widen your reachNew designs in the same niche, titles matched to different buyer searches
4Bring in trafficShare your own links, and try a small Etsy Ads budget if you want
5Read the numbersRefresh the first photo and title of listings that get views but no clicks
6Prepare and planOrder a sample of your own product, plan the next shopping dates

Weeks 1 and 2: the shop and the listings

"If your shop is not complete, your listings' search visibility may be impacted" (Etsy's Search Visibility page). Etsy also names a missing return policy among the things that can push listings lower, so set one even if it says no returns (Etsy on search ranking). If you sell print on demand, you must also disclose your production partner in the relevant listings, and our guide to production partners on Etsy shows how.

In week 2, hold each listing against the Search Visibility checks: at least one image, a high-resolution, clear and well-lit primary photo, a primary photo that shows one finished product rather than a collage, the most specific category possible, and a return policy.

Weeks 3 and 4: reach and traffic

Keep new designs in the same niche, so the shop reads as one clear offer. To bring your own traffic, you can join Share & Save: enrolled sellers "get an instant refund of 4% off the eligible order total", and Etsy's page says that from October 20 to January 4 enrolled sellers earn 6.5% back on eligible orders (Etsy Share & Save). Links sent in Etsy Messages or placed in listing descriptions do not count.

Etsy Ads has a 15-day waiting period after you open your shop, "The minimum daily budget is $1", and Etsy recommends running a strategy for at least 30 days before adjusting it (Etsy Ads guide). Ads are optional, and Etsy lets you change the budget at any time.

Weeks 5 and 6: numbers and preparation

For listings that are seen but not clicked, look first at the first photo and the start of the title. If you are unsure about price, Etsy's Marketplace Insights tool shows price ranges of recently bought listings for search terms (Etsy updates). In week 6, order a sample of your own product: you get your own photos and you see exactly what a buyer receives. Our guide to ordering samples of your own products lists what to check.

Be ready for the first order

A few rules start to matter the moment the first order lands:

  • Tracking. Physical orders need valid tracking to count toward Star Seller and to qualify for Etsy Purchase Protection (Etsy on tracking).

  • Payment reserve. If Etsy holds a reserve on your payments, the funds are released once Etsy can confirm the order shipped, and "For most sellers, the reserve will be removed within 90 days" (Etsy on reserves).

  • Offsite Ads fee. If your first order comes through an Offsite Ad and you made less than $10,000 on Etsy in the past 365 days, Etsy charges a 15% fee on the order total (Etsy fees).

  • Messages and reviews. Reply to first messages quickly. "Buyers have 100 days to review an order" from the delivery or estimated delivery date (Etsy on reviews), and Star Seller eligibility starts 90 days after your first sale (Etsy Star Seller). Our article on Star Seller requirements for POD shops has the full criteria.

How Alomations helps during the wait

Going through listings one by one takes time. The Alomations listings manager, on every plan including Free, shows the active and draft listings of every connected shop in one list and gives each live listing a score: ten checks, each with the fix attached. The question "which listing should I fix first" becomes a to-do list. Update SEO rewrites a live listing's title, tags and description, and the first rewrite per listing is free. You can also ask Aloma, the AI assistant, which of your listings score under 70.

The shop report, on paid plans, looks at the whole shop instead of single listings: a scored health check with an action plan and a PDF. The features page lists everything else.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a first Etsy sale usually take?

There is no single answer that applies to every shop. The product, the niche, the number of listings and the season all play a part. Rather than guessing at a date, check whether your listings get views.

Will more listings speed up the first sale?

More listings mean more chances to match a search, as long as each one is complete. A few well-photographed listings in one niche do more than many scattered ones.

Should I run a sale to get the first order?

You can, as long as you check the margin first. Etsy lets you offer "any percentage off between 5% and 75% off the list price" (Etsy on sales and promo codes). Subtract Etsy's fees and the product cost from the discounted price and see what is left.
