A print-on-demand order is printed wherever your production partner's print centre is, which is not necessarily where you live: a seller in Istanbul can have a US order printed in the US and shipped from there. For a buyer in the US, that location shapes the delivery date they see, what shipping costs, whether import duties come into it, and what your listing has to say about the item.
This matters most for sellers outside the US who sell to US buyers, which describes many shops run from Türkiye, and for anyone choosing between production partners. Your design and your listing can be excellent and still disappoint a buyer if the parcel starts its trip on the wrong continent.
What "printed where" means on an Etsy order
On Etsy, the place of production shows up in two settings. The first is the shipping profile: "Each listing can have only one shipping origin." The origin should be where the parcel actually leaves from, which for print on demand is the print centre, not your home address.
The second is the production partner disclosure. Etsy allows print-on-demand partners "as long as the items being sold are the seller's original design (or the buyer's customization)", and it requires you to disclose the partner in the relevant listings, with its location (city, state, province and so on). Buyers can see that information from your shop's About section. Our guide to production partners on Etsy covers the rules in full.
Because a listing has one origin, a product printed in two places needs two setups. If your mugs are made in one country and your shirts in another, give each its own shipping profile with the right origin.
Delivery time: processing plus distance
What the buyer experiences as delivery time has two parts. Processing is "how much time you need to get an order ready to ship", counted in business days and starting the day after purchase. For print on demand, that is the time your partner needs to print the item, pack it and hand it to a carrier.
Transit is the rest, and distance drives it. A shirt printed in the US for a US buyer travels a domestic route. A shirt printed abroad crosses a border, clears customs and often changes carriers on the way, and each step adds days and uncertainty. Our article on how long POD orders take to reach US buyers looks at the timeline step by step.
The estimate matters beyond the buyer's patience. Etsy Purchase Protection covers, among other cases, an order that arrived "7+ days after its estimated delivery date window provided at checkout", but its conditions include shipping within your stated processing time with valid tracking. A realistic processing time and a realistic route protect you as much as the buyer. See what processing time to set for POD on Etsy for how to pick one.
Shipping cost and search placement
International postage usually costs more than a domestic parcel, and the buyer pays for it either in the shipping line or inside the item price. For US listings there is a search effect as well: Etsy says "US listings with domestic shipping prices lower than $6 will be prioritized in search", and it names a shipping price that is too high among the things that can push US sellers' listings lower.
A print centre close to the buyer is what makes a low shipping price for US buyers realistic in the first place. For setting the profile itself, see Etsy shipping profiles for print on demand products.
Duties and US buyers when you print abroad
In a June 2026 update, Etsy wrote: "Starting July 9, sellers outside of the US will need to account for all of their costs, including duties and import fees" on orders going to the US. The same update adds: "If orders are shipped without duties prepaid, they will no longer qualify for Etsy Purchase Protection."
If your parcel ships from abroad, those costs are yours to price in. If the order is printed in the US for a US buyer, the parcel never crosses a border on its way, so that shipment does not pass through customs before it reaches the buyer. For questions about your own tax or customs position, check Etsy's help pages or ask a qualified professional. Our article on shipping from Türkiye to US buyers covers the basics for sellers who do ship internationally.
Printed in the US or abroad: what changes
| What it affects | Printed in the US for a US buyer | Printed abroad for a US buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping origin on the listing | A US address | The print centre's country |
| Route | Domestic | International, through customs |
| Duties and import fees | No border crossing on a domestic parcel | Yours to account for, per Etsy's July 9 rule |
| Purchase Protection | Needs on-time shipping, valid tracking and a delivery estimate | The same, plus duties prepaid |
| Postage the buyer pays for | Domestic rates | International rates |
What to tell buyers
A buyer may never think about where a shirt is printed, but they will notice when it arrives. Three habits keep expectations right:
Disclose the production partner with its location, as Etsy requires. Etsy lets you hide the partner's name and show a descriptive title instead, such as "Apparel printer".
Set a processing time your partner actually meets, so the delivery estimate at checkout is true.
Answer "where is my order" messages with the tracking link. Valid tracking also matters for Star Seller, which counts only orders with a valid tracking number.
How Alomations handles production location
In Alomations, orders arrive resolved: the Etsy order pulls in with the design and variant matched, and you fulfil it through production partners from the orders screen. Before you pay from your balance, the item cost and the shipping are shown separately, and each order row says which print centre has the order. Production for US orders is in the US, and our catalog products are printed with DTF for apparel and sublimation for the products that need it.
Tracking follows the same path: the partner cannot mark an order shipped without a tracking number, and the tracking is posted back to Etsy where Etsy allows it. You can browse the products and their "from" prices in the catalog, with shipping quoted separately. Fulfillment is open on every plan, Free included, and you can still print and ship an order yourself when you prefer.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to tell buyers where my POD items are printed?
Etsy requires you to disclose your production partners in the relevant listings, including the partner's location. You can show a descriptive title such as "Apparel printer" instead of the partner's name.
Can one Etsy listing ship from two countries?
No. Etsy says each listing can have only one shipping origin, so products printed in different places need separate shipping profiles and usually separate listings.
Does printing in the US change my Etsy fees as a seller in Türkiye?
The rates do not change with where the item is printed: Etsy's payment processing fee follows the country of your bank account. The transaction fee also applies to the shipping you charge, so a different shipping price changes the amount you pay, not the rate. What US printing mainly changes is the route, the postage and the duties on the shipment.
Is a long processing time a problem?
Not in itself, as long as you meet it. Your ship-by date comes from the processing time you set, so an honest number protects you better than an optimistic one.
