An Etsy shipping profile is a saved set of shipping settings (origin, destinations, prices and delivery time) that you apply to many listings at once, and for print on demand you should build one per product type, based on where your production partner ships from and what it charges. Get the origin, the one-item and additional-item prices and the processing time right once, and every listing that uses the profile inherits them.
This is for print-on-demand sellers who have been editing shipping listing by listing, or who use one profile for everything from tees to canvas prints. Shipping is part of the price the buyer sees, part of the fee you pay and part of how Etsy judges a listing, so a wrong profile costs you in more than one place.
What a shipping profile controls
Etsy describes the purpose plainly: "To reuse the same shipping settings on multiple items, apply a shipping profile" (Etsy shipping settings help). Two rules from the same page shape how you set them up for POD:
"A listing can only be connected to one shipping profile."
"Each listing can have only one shipping origin."
So a profile is not a shop-wide setting. It is a recipe for one kind of product, and a listing can follow only one recipe. If you sell tees made in one place and mugs made in another, they need different profiles.
Set the origin to where the product ships from
For print on demand, the origin is the location your production partner ships from, not your home address. If you live in Türkiye and your US orders are printed in the US, a US origin tells buyers where the parcel really starts, and transit is counted from there.
Cross-border orders bring their own rules. For US-bound orders from sellers outside the US, Etsy's June 2026 update said: "Starting July 9, sellers outside of the US will need to account for all of their costs, including duties and import fees", and orders shipped without duties prepaid "will no longer qualify for Etsy Purchase Protection" (Etsy updates). For how duties apply to your own shop, check Etsy's help pages or a qualified professional. Our guide to shipping from Türkiye to US buyers covers the basics.
Build one profile per product type
Products differ in weight, packaging and the partner's shipping charge, so group them. A shop with five product types usually needs about five profiles, not one and not fifty.
| Profile | Typical products | Origin | Prices to enter | Processing time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light apparel | Tees, tank tops, baby bodysuits | The partner's print location | The partner's quote for one item and for each additional item | The partner's production time |
| Heavy apparel | Sweatshirts, hoodies | The partner's print location | A heavier quote, with its own additional-item rate | Same as light apparel unless the partner says otherwise |
| Drinkware | Mugs, tumblers, water bottles | Where the partner makes these products | A quote for fragile, boxed items | Often its own production time |
| Wall art | Canvas prints | Where the partner makes canvas | A quote for large, boxed items | Check the partner's time for framing |
| Small gifts | Ornaments, tote bags | The partner's location | A light parcel quote | The partner's production time |
Name profiles so you can tell them apart in a list, for example "US apparel light" and "US drinkware". Then attach each listing to the profile for its product.
Prices: one item, additional item and upgrades
For POD, fixed prices usually make sense, because the partner, not you, buys the label. Etsy's calculated shipping is limited anyway: "Currently, only sellers who use USPS or Canada Post to send orders can use calculated shipping" (Etsy shipping settings help).
Fixed prices have two fields that matter. When a buyer orders several items, Etsy combines shipping (Etsy shipping settings help): it charges the most expensive "One item" rate plus each other item's "Additional item" rate. Set the additional-item price from your partner's real cost for a second item, or a multi-item order can lose money. Upgrades such as faster delivery stack on top: "Fixed-cost shipping upgrades add to the base shipping cost, rather than replace it."
Shipping is not fee-free either. Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee "applies to shipping and gift wrapping (if you charge your customers for those)" (Etsy fees). And for US listings, the shipping price affects search: "US listings with domestic shipping prices lower than $6 will be prioritized in search" (Etsy search visibility help). Whether to fold shipping into the item price is its own decision: see free shipping or charged shipping for POD.
Delivery estimates that match production
The delivery date a buyer sees is processing time plus transit time. Processing is "how much time you need to get an order ready to ship" (Etsy processing time help), and for POD that is your partner's production time. It starts the day after purchase, and Etsy counts it in business days, Monday to Friday, treating weekend orders as Friday orders (Etsy shipping settings help).
Set processing to what your partner actually delivers, and leave a small cushion for busy seasons rather than promising the fastest case. Processing times can be set per listing or per variation, and editing a processing profile updates every listing linked to it, which makes a seasonal change quick. If you need help choosing the number, our guide on what processing time to set for POD walks through it.
Accurate estimates protect you. Etsy Purchase Protection requires, among other things, that you ship within the stated processing time with valid tracking and show an estimated delivery date on the listing (Etsy Purchase Protection). For US sellers, "Adding tracking information is required to complete an order" (Etsy tracking help).
How Alomations templates carry your shipping profiles
In Alomations, a template holds everything a product's listings share: product and category, price, sizes and colours, materials, SKUs, and the shipping, return and processing profiles. You choose the Etsy shipping profile once in the template, and every listing a run creates from that template is published with it. Per-shop templates let each connected shop use its own profiles, the bulk Etsy-profile editor sets profiles on many templates at once, and "Refresh from Etsy" pulls in profiles you created or changed on Etsy.
When you fulfill through our production partners, the orders screen shows item cost and shipping separately before you pay from your balance, and production for US orders is in the US, which makes an honest origin easy to set. Shipping is quoted separately from the product prices on the catalog, so you can build each profile from real numbers. For a walkthrough, see building your first listing template.
Frequently asked questions
How many shipping profiles does a POD shop need?
One per group of products that share an origin, a shipping cost and a production time. For most shops that means a handful, such as light apparel, heavy apparel, drinkware and wall art.
Can one listing have two shipping origins?
No. Etsy says each listing can have only one shipping origin. If the same design is made in two places, list each version separately with its own profile.
Does editing a shipping profile change my live listings?
Yes, that is the point of a profile: its settings are shared by every listing that uses it. That makes seasonal changes fast, and it is a good reason to check which listings are linked before you edit.
Should I offer free shipping on POD items?
It depends on your prices and your buyers. For US listings, Etsy prioritizes domestic shipping under $6 in search, so it is worth testing whether part of the shipping cost belongs in the item price.
