A ghost mannequin mockup is a garment image in which the mannequin has been edited out, so a shirt, hoodie or sweatshirt looks as if an invisible body is wearing it: hollow at the neck, filled out through the chest and sleeves. It shows the garment's shape and drape without a model, which makes it a useful middle ground between a flat-lay and a model shot.
This matters if you sell apparel on Etsy and want a clean, consistent look across many designs. Buyers want to see the neckline, the length and how the fabric falls, and a ghost mannequin image shows all three without a person's styling taking over. It also has limits, especially around fit, and knowing them helps you decide which slot it deserves in your listing.
How a ghost mannequin image is made
In product photography, the garment is first shot on a mannequin from the front and the back. The photographer then shoots the inside of the back neck separately, often with the garment turned inside out. In editing, the mannequin is removed and the inner neck is placed into the gap, so you see into the collar as you would on a real garment. Some photographers call it the invisible mannequin or "hollow man" look.
For print on demand, most sellers never run that shoot themselves. They use ghost mannequin photos of the blank garment and place their design digitally, the same way they would use any other mockup. If you start from someone else's photos, check that the licence covers commercial use on Etsy.
When it beats flat-lay or model shots
Each type of apparel image does one job better than the others. Our comparison of flat-lay and model mockups covers those two in depth, and this table adds the ghost mannequin to the picture.
| Shot type | What it shows best | Weak spot | Where it fits in a listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghost mannequin | Shape, neckline, drape and length, with nothing to distract | No human scale, can feel clinical | A clean main image, back views, collar or hood details |
| Flat-lay | Colour, the whole design, a styled scene | The garment looks flat, no sense of how it hangs | Colour options, lifestyle and gift scenes |
| Model | Fit on a body, scale, who the product is for | The model draws attention, and fit depends on their size | Fit and lifestyle images, size reference |
A ghost mannequin image tends to win in a few situations:
Structured garments. Hoodies, sweatshirts with ribbed cuffs and polos with collars look better with volume than laid flat.
Back prints. A back view on a ghost mannequin shows the print where it really sits, below the collar.
A consistent catalog. When you list dozens of designs, the same hollow form on the same background makes your shop look organised.
Neutral styling. No model means no particular age, style or body type defining who the shirt is for.
It loses when the buyer needs emotion or proof of fit. Gift and occasion listings usually need a scene that shows the moment, and a buyer comparing sizes wants to see a person.
How a ghost mannequin shows fit, and where it stops
A ghost mannequin image is honest about the garment's cut. It shows the silhouette, how long the body is compared with the width, where the sleeves end, the shape of the neckline and how ribbing gathers at the cuffs and hem. For a buyer deciding between a boxy unisex tee and a fitted one, that is real information.
What it cannot show is how the garment fits a particular body. The mannequin is one fixed size, and buyers are not. Pair the ghost image with a size chart and, if you have one, a model image that states the model's height and the size worn. Our guides on showing fit in apparel mockups and building a size chart for Etsy apparel cover both.
Accuracy also protects you. Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover an item that does not match the listing description, so the shape you show should be the shape the buyer receives.
Using ghost mannequin mockups well on Etsy
A few Etsy rules decide how a ghost mannequin image should be prepared.
Flatten transparent cutouts. Ghost mannequin images are often supplied as cutouts on a transparent background, but Etsy says "Animated .gif files & transparent .png files are not supported." Place the garment on a solid or softly lit background before you upload.
Use enough pixels. Etsy recommends listing photos with a width and height of at least 2,000 pixels.
Plan for the thumbnail crops. Etsy shows thumbnails in square, portrait and landscape views and asks you to keep your subject clear in all 3 views. A centred ghost mannequin with space around it survives those crops well.
One product in the main photo. Etsy's search visibility checks include a primary photo showing one finished product, with no collages. A single garment on a plain background meets that naturally.
Use the full set. You can add up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing, so a ghost front and back can sit next to a model shot, a flat-lay in other colours and a size chart.
Placement matters as much as the photo. A design that floats flat over the folds, sits too low or is too large for the garment is the fastest way to make a ghost image look fake. Our list of mockup mistakes that make Etsy listings look fake covers the usual problems.
How Alomations handles mockups
Alomations has a built-in mockup library of ready product photos for the catalog products, so you can list without owning a single photo. Smart mockups render your design onto those photos with real fabric folds, shading and light, objects in front of the design (a hand, a strap) stay in front, and you can preview every colour and every side before the run. A zoom control lets a product shot from far back fill more of the frame.
If ghost mannequin images are the look you want for your shop, your own mockup library on paid plans is the place for them. Upload ghost mannequin photos of your blanks (shot yourself or licensed for commercial use), set the print area once, and reuse them in every run. In Mockup Preview you can even change the shirt colour of your own photo live. Our guide to using your own product photos as mockups walks through the setup, and every mockup counts toward Etsy's 20 images.
Frequently asked questions
Is a ghost mannequin the same as an invisible mannequin?
Yes. Ghost mannequin, invisible mannequin and hollow man all describe the same technique: the mannequin is removed in editing so the garment looks worn by an invisible body.
Can a ghost mannequin image be my first listing photo?
Yes, as long as it is clear, well lit and shows one product. Etsy says the first photo should be horizontal or square, and it uses square, portrait and landscape crops, so check all three.
Does a ghost mannequin show how a shirt fits?
It shows the cut and proportions, not the fit on a particular body. Add a size chart and, ideally, a model image with the model's height and size.
Can I upload a ghost mannequin cutout with a transparent background?
No. Etsy does not support transparent PNG files for listing photos, so place the garment on a background and export a flat image first.
