Cap mockups: the front and side views buyers need

Caps need a different shot list from shirts. Here are the front, side and close-up views a cap listing needs, and how to keep a small front print readable.

A good hat mockup set starts with a straight front view that shows the print clearly, then adds a three-quarter or side view for the crown shape, the brim and the closure. Because a cap print is small, at least one image should be a tight crop where the design fills a large part of the frame.

If you already sell shirts and are adding caps, you may have noticed that the approach that works for a tee turns a cap print into a smudge in search results. A cap is small, curved and three-dimensional, so it needs its own shot list and much tighter framing.

The views a cap listing needs

Every image should answer a question the buyer would otherwise have to ask you. For a cap, those questions are about the print, the shape and the fit.

Etsy gives you room for all of these: a listing can carry up to 20 photos and 2 videos. The front and side views do the selling. The back, the lineup and the on-head shot answer the questions that would otherwise arrive as messages, such as whether the strap adjusts or how deep the crown is.

Making a small front print readable

A design that covers a shirt front shrinks to a patch on a cap, and in a search thumbnail it shrinks again. Five habits keep it readable:

  • Fill the frame. The cap should take up most of the image, not sit small in the middle of a table. Crop until the front panel is large. Our guide to framing in mockups covers this in detail.

  • Shoot the front straight on. A low angle hides the print under the brim, and a high angle shows mostly crown.

  • Give the print contrast. A dark design on a dark cap disappears at thumbnail size, so lead with your best-contrast colour.

  • Add a dedicated close-up. A second image where the print fills most of the frame lets buyers read the lettering and see the texture. See close-up mockups that show print texture.

  • Keep the design simple. Thick shapes and short words survive at cap size. Long phrases and fine detail do not, either in the mockup or on the real cap.

Then check the result where buyers will see it. Etsy crops thumbnails differently across the site and advises you to "position your image so your subject is clear in all 3 views used across Etsy". Since June 2026 you can preview listing thumbnails before publishing, which is the fastest way to see whether a small print still reads.

Which view to put first

The first photo carries the listing in search, so choose it for clarity, not mood. Etsy's Search Visibility page checks for a primary photo that shows one finished product, with no collages, and is clear and well lit. For a cap, that means a single cap, front or three-quarter view, filling the frame on a calm background.

Etsy also says the first photo should be horizontal (landscape) or square, and it recommends a width and height of at least 2,000 pixels for listing photos. Save the colour lineup for later in the set: a grid of six caps is a collage, and each cap in it is too small to read. There is more on this in what your first Etsy photo has to do in search results.

Showing the print at its true size and position

A mockup is a promise. If it shows a print twice the size the cap can actually carry, the buyer receives something that looks smaller than what they paid for, and the review says so.

  • Use the print area your production partner gives for that exact cap, and size the design to it before placing it.

  • Many structured six-panel caps have a seam down the middle of the front. Check where it falls: a monogram split by a seam looks like an accident.

  • Keep the print where it will really be produced, which is usually centred on the front panel above the brim.

  • Match every mockup colour to a real colour in your variations, so the buyer can find the cap they saw.

How a cap is decorated also limits size and detail, and printing on caps and hats compares the options before you design.

Keeping your cap listings consistent

When a buyer opens your shop, or sees three of your caps in one search, the photos should differ only where the designs differ. Use the same background, the same first-photo angle and the same order of views across every cap listing, so the buyer compares designs instead of lighting.

Consistency also saves you time. Once a cap set works, you repeat the same views for each new design instead of deciding the shot list again, and a new colour simply joins the lineup at the end.

How Alomations renders cap mockups

Smart mockups in Alomations render your design onto real product photos with the fabric's folds, shading and light, so the print takes on the photo instead of looking pasted on top. They are free to use. Objects in front of the design stay in front, and a zoom (framing) control lets a product shot taken from far back fill more of the image, which is exactly the fix a small cap print needs. Before the run you can preview every colour and every side, and every mockup is downloadable if you want it elsewhere.

Caps from Valucap and YP Classics are in the catalog, and the built-in mockup library has ready product photos for catalog products, so you can list a cap without owning one. On paid plans, your own mockup library lets you upload your own cap photos, set the print area once and reuse them in every run. Smart mockups count toward Etsy's 20 images, so plan the set as one. Smart mockups in Alomations shows the whole feature.

Frequently asked questions

How many photos should a cap listing have?

Etsy allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos. Cover the views in the table first, then add an image only when it answers a question the others do not, such as how the closure works or how a colour looks in daylight.

Should the first photo show the cap on a model?

Usually not. A single cap, front or three-quarter, filling the frame reads better as a small thumbnail. Put the on-head shot later in the set to show scale and fit.

Can I upload a transparent PNG cap mockup to Etsy?

No. Etsy accepts .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic files, but says "animated .gif files & transparent .png files are not supported". Export the mockup with a solid background.

What size should a hat mockup image be?

Etsy recommends at least 2,000 pixels in width and height, and the first photo should be at least 635 pixels on each side to avoid showing up lower in searches.
