A bundle mockup does its job when the first photo shows every item in the set together, at the same scale and in the same light, and the photos after it show each piece on its own. When the title, the variation names and the first line of the description repeat the same count, the buyer knows exactly what will arrive before they add it to the cart.
This guide is for sellers who list more than one item under one price: matching family shirts, couple sets, bachelorette crews, a trio of prints or a mug with a matching tee. Sets can raise the value of each order, but they also invite questions like "is the second shirt included?", and doubt that nobody answers can turn into returns and cases. Clear photos settle most of it before the buyer has to ask.
First decide what the buyer is actually buying
Before you shoot anything, settle how the set is sold, because the photos have to say the same thing as the checkout. There are three common setups, and each one needs a different first photo.
| Setup | What the buyer chooses | What the photos must make clear | Works well for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed set, one price | Usually only size or colour | How many pieces arrive and that they ship together | Gift sets, print trios, mug and tee pairs |
| Matching items, one listing | Which piece and which size, one at a time | That each piece is priced and ordered on its own | Family, couple and bridal party shirts |
| Separate listings, bundled at checkout | Each listing on its own | Which other listings complete the set | Collections whose pieces also sell alone |
The middle setup suits apparel well. Etsy lets you add variations for up to 3 item attributes, so a matching-shirt listing can offer the piece (Mom, Dad, Kid), the size and the colour as separate choices. The third setup uses Etsy's own sale tools: discounted bundles can include up to 3 listings.
The first photo: the whole set, in one scene
The first photo carries the listing in search results, so it should show the set as one finished product, not as a grid of separate pictures. Etsy's Search Visibility page checks for a primary photo showing one finished product, with no collages, and for a primary photo that is clear and well lit. Three shirts photographed together in one scene show the set as the single product the buyer receives; three mockups pasted into a grid are a collage. We cover the wider job of that image in what your first Etsy photo has to do in search results.
A few rules keep a set readable at thumbnail size:
Show every piece at the same scale, so the toddler tee looks small because it is small, not because it was shrunk.
Use one light direction and one background for all the pieces.
Overlap the pieces as little as possible, so every design stays visible.
Leave space around the group. Etsy crops thumbnails to square, portrait and landscape, and asks you to position your image so your subject is clear in all 3 views.
Make the first photo horizontal or square. Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2,000 pixels wide and high.
Then show each piece on its own
After the group shot, the buyer wants to check the piece they care about. Etsy's listing guide allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing, which is plenty for a set if you plan the order:
The whole set together.
Each piece alone, in the same order as the variation menu.
A close-up of each design, so lettering and fine lines can be read.
The set in use: a family-photo style shot, a gift box, a shelf.
A size chart that covers every size range in the set (adult, youth, toddler).
A "what's included" image that names each piece and its count.
A short video of the set, up to 15 seconds.
If your listing has more than 20 options, Etsy only lets you add photos for 20 of them, so give option photos to the pieces that differ most. For how many images a listing really needs, see how many photos an Etsy listing should have.
Matching shirts for families and groups
Family and group sets add a second question: which size range each piece comes in. Show at least one photo where an adult shirt, a youth shirt and a toddler or baby piece sit side by side, so the buyer sees that small sizes are part of the offer. If the design changes per person ("Mama", "Papa", "Mini"), each version needs its own clear photo, named exactly as it appears in the variation menu. Our guide to family matching shirts covers the size ranges in detail.
Personalized sets need one more image: a sample with realistic names that shows where each name sits. Etsy allows up to 5 personalization fields per listing, so for a large group, one text box with clear instructions ("list each name with its size") is easier to manage than trying to give every person a field of their own.
Say the count in words, everywhere
Photos do most of the work, but the words have to agree with them. Etsy's advice is that a person should be able to read the first sentence and know exactly what you're selling. For a set, that first sentence states the count and the pieces: "Set of three matching shirts: one adult, one youth, one toddler, sold together."
Put the count in the title and in the variation names ("Set of 3", "Single shirt").
State what is not included, such as a gift box that only appears as styling.
Match every item in the photos to an item in the description.
This protects you as much as the buyer. Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover cases where the item doesn't match the listing description, so a prop that looks like part of the set is a real risk.
How we build set listings in Alomations
Our smart mockups render each design onto a product photo with real fabric folds, shading and light, and you can preview every colour and every side before the run. For a set, that gives you per-piece photos that look as if they were shot in the same session. The background picker for flat-lay shots lets you use the same backdrop for every piece, and because smart mockups are downloadable, you can also use them to build the "what's included" image.
When the set is a collection of designs, one per tee, Aloma, our AI assistant, can make it a group listing: the set of designs becomes one listing instead of one listing per design. Smart mockups count toward Etsy's 20 images, so plan the photo order above before you start the run.
Frequently asked questions
Can the first photo be a collage of the set?
It is safer not to. Etsy's Search Visibility checks look for a primary photo showing one finished product, with no collages. Show the set in one scene first and keep any grid for a later photo.
Should each piece also have its own listing?
If the pieces sell well alone, yes: list them separately and offer the set as its own listing or as a discounted bundle. If a piece only makes sense inside the set, one listing is simpler for the buyer.
How many photos does a bundle listing need?
Enough to show the whole set, each piece, a close-up of each design and the size range. Etsy's listing guide allows up to 20 photos, so a set rarely runs out of room.
Does a video help for sets?
A short video can show the pieces together and then one by one, which a still photo cannot. Etsy allows 2 videos per listing, and they play without sound and run up to 15 seconds.
