In a mockup workflow, a PSD is the editable template where you place your design, a PNG carries artwork and anything that needs transparency, and a JPG is the finished photo you upload. For Etsy listing photos, upload a JPG or a PNG without transparency: Etsy accepts .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic, does not support transparent PNGs, and does not list PSD at all.
This guide is for sellers who have bought a mockup pack, opened a folder full of files with three different extensions, and wondered which one is meant for what. Getting the formats right keeps your listing photos sharp, keeps colours from shifting and saves you from uploads that fail or look wrong.
PSD: the editable mockup template
A PSD is a Photoshop document. In a mockup pack it is the working file: a product photo built in layers, with a smart object layer where your design goes, plus layers for shadows, fabric texture and sometimes a changeable background colour. You open it, place your design, and the layers above it make the print look like part of the product. We explain the mechanics in what is a smart object mockup in Photoshop.
What a PSD is not is an upload file. It is not on Etsy's list of accepted image formats (Etsy Help: photo requirements), it is usually large, and it needs Photoshop or an editor that can read layered PSD files. Treat it as your master: keep it, edit it, and export a flat image from it for every listing. Check the licence that came with the pack too, since the file you bought and the right to sell with it are separate questions, as we explain in mockup licences: can you use any mockup you find.
PNG: transparency and lossless detail
A PNG stores every pixel without compression loss and can hold a transparent background. That makes it the right format for two jobs in a mockup workflow.
The first is your design file. A print file needs a transparent background so only the artwork prints. One print provider puts it simply: "For DTG products, PNG is usually the best option because it supports transparent backgrounds", and a JPG cannot hold transparency, so its empty areas can print as white (a print provider's file guidelines). See how to export a transparent PNG for a t-shirt design for the export steps.
The second is a lossless master of a finished mockup, for example to keep before you make the final JPG. What a PNG should not be is a transparent listing photo. Etsy's photo article says "Animated .gif files & transparent .png files are not supported", so a mockup with a cut-out background needs a solid background before it goes on a listing.
JPG: the finished listing photo
A JPG uses lossy compression: it throws away detail you mostly cannot see, which keeps files small. That trade suits listing photos, and Etsy's own guidance points the same way:
"We recommend your listing photos have a width and height of at least 2000 pixels or more."
"Your first listing photo should have a width and height of at least 635 pixels to avoid showing up lower in searches."
"Images larger than 1MB in file size may not finish uploading, especially on a slower internet connection." This is a warning, not a hard limit.
"We convert images to use the sRGB color profile (CMYK color profile is for print only)."
All four come from Etsy's photo requirements. The practical result: export mockups as JPG, at least 2,000 pixels on each side, in sRGB, with a quality setting that keeps the file near 1MB without visible blocks. Save each JPG once from your master. Opening a JPG, editing it and saving it again loses a little more detail every time. Our Etsy mockup size and dimensions guide covers the pixel sizes in depth.
Which format goes where
| Format | What it is for | Transparency | Upload to Etsy as a listing photo | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PSD | Editing a mockup template | Yes, in layers | No, not on Etsy's accepted list | Large files, the pack's licence terms |
| PNG | Print files, artwork, lossless masters | Yes | Yes, but not with a transparent background | File size, and transparency on listing photos |
| JPG | Finished listing photos | No | Yes | Repeated saves, oversized files on slow uploads |
| SVG | Vector artwork | Yes | On Etsy's list, but a mockup photo is a raster image, so use JPG | Fonts and effects that do not survive export |
A simple export routine
Keep the PSD as your master and never overwrite it with a flattened version.
Place your design as a transparent PNG at its real print size, so the smart object does not have to enlarge it.
Export a JPG at 2,000 pixels or more on each side, in sRGB.
Check the file size. If it is far above 1MB, lower the quality slightly rather than shrinking the image.
Check the crop. Etsy says thumbnails need enough border to be cropped to square, portrait and landscape, and the first photo should be landscape or square (Etsy Help: photo requirements). Since June 2026 you can also preview thumbnails before publishing (Etsy Help: 2026 updates).
Name files clearly (product, colour, angle) so you pick the right one when you build the listing.
How Alomations handles mockup files
With smart mockups in Alomations, there is no PSD to open. Your design is rendered onto product photos with real fabric folds, shading and light, and objects in front of the design, such as a hand or a strap, stay in front. A background picker covers flat-lay shots, a zoom control makes a product shot from far back fill more of the image, and you can preview every colour and every side before the run. Smart mockups are free to use and downloadable, and the run places them on the listing for you. Etsy allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing (Etsy Help: creating a listing), and smart mockups count toward the 20. There is more in smart mockups in Alomations.
On the design side, every design comes back print-ready at 12 inches and 300 DPI (3,600 pixels on the long side), as a transparent PNG with an SVG alongside. On paid plans you can also upload your own product photos to your own mockup library, set the print area once and reuse it in every run.
Frequently asked questions
Can I upload a PSD to Etsy?
No. Etsy accepts .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic files for listing photos. Export a JPG from the PSD first.
Should listing photos be PNG or JPG?
JPG in most cases. It keeps files small enough to upload reliably. A PNG works too, as long as it has a solid background.
Can I upload a transparent PNG mockup to Etsy?
No. Etsy does not support transparent PNGs for listing photos. Put the mockup on a solid background and export it again.
What size should a mockup JPG be?
Etsy recommends at least 2,000 pixels in width and height, and warns that files above 1MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection.
You can make listings with smart mockups on the free plan, without opening a single PSD.
