Showing fit in apparel mockups: size and model height

Buyers cannot try a shirt on through a screen. How to show the size a model wears, their height and the fit, so more buyers order the right size the first time.

A fit mockup works when it says three things next to the photo: the size the model is wearing, the model's height, and how that size sits on them (true to size, roomy, or sized up for a relaxed look). Put that line on the photo or right under it, repeat it near the top of the description, and pair it with a size chart so buyers can compare the picture with a shirt they already own.

This guide is for print-on-demand sellers who list t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies and keep answering the same message: "Will a large be too big on me?" A wrong-size order hurts more in print on demand than in retail. The shirt was printed for that one buyer, so it cannot go back on a shelf, and the buyer ends up unhappy with an item that was never faulty.

Why a product photo alone does not show fit

A flat lay or a ghost mockup shows the design and the colour well. It does not show length, how wide the body is, or where the sleeve ends on an arm. A model photo gets closer, but only if the buyer knows who they are looking at. An XL on a petite model looks like an oversized style, and an S on a tall model looks cropped, even with the same cut.

Unisex sizing adds confusion too: many buyers usually shop in women's sizes, and a unisex medium fits them differently. Our guide to unisex vs women's sizing covers how to explain that difference in words.

Etsy's own listing guide asks you to "Describe the details of your item so buyers know what they're getting" (Etsy: creating a listing). Fit is one of those details. It also matters when something goes wrong: Etsy Purchase Protection lists as covered an item that "matches the listing description and photos, but a buyer claims it does not", and lists as not covered an item that "doesn't match the listing description" (Etsy Purchase Protection). Clear fit information keeps your listing on the right side of that line.

What a fit caption should say

Keep the caption short enough to read on a phone and complete enough that nobody has to message you. A good fit line covers:

  • The size the model is wearing.

  • The model's height, in centimetres and in feet and inches if you sell to buyers in more than one country.

  • The model's usual size, so buyers can tell whether the photo shows a true fit or a sized-up look.

  • The blank, by brand and style, because fit changes from one blank to the next.

  • Where the size chart sits in the listing.

A complete line reads like this: "Model usually wears a medium and is wearing a large in the Comfort Colors 1717 for a relaxed fit. Full size chart in the last photo."

Name the blank because makers describe their cuts differently. Gildan calls the 5000 a "Classic fit" (Gildan 5000 spec sheet) and the 64000 a "Modern classic fit" (Gildan 64000 spec sheet), while the Comfort Colors 1717 sheet says "Relaxed fit" (Comfort Colors 1717 spec sheet). A buyer who already owns one of these shirts understands your fit at once.

Only state what you know. If a stock mockup's source does not give the model's size or height, do not guess: use a measurement image and a size chart instead.

The fit images worth a place in your listing

Etsy lets you add "up to 20 photos and 2 videos" to each listing (Etsy: creating a listing). The first photos should sell the design. Fit images follow, for the buyer who likes the shirt and now needs a size.

Keep fit captions off your first photo. Etsy crops thumbnails to square, portrait and landscape views and asks you to "Position your image so your subject is clear in all 3 views used across Etsy" (Etsy: listing thumbnails). Text near the edge of a first photo is the first thing a crop cuts off. On later photos, the buyer sees the whole image.

For the chart itself, our guide on how to build a size chart for Etsy apparel listings walks through the measurements and units.

Choosing the model and the shot

Fit images work best when the model looks like the people who buy from you. A shop selling to new mums gets more from a model with a similar build than from a fashion shoot. Our article on choosing models for your mockups goes deeper on this, and flat-lay vs model mockups explains which listing photos each type should fill.

A few habits make fit shots more useful:

  • Shoot the model standing straight with relaxed arms, so the hem and sleeves sit where they would in daily wear.

  • Use the same model and size across a collection, so a returning buyer learns your sizing once.

  • Repeat the fit line in the description and in your saved reply for size questions.

How Alomations helps with fit images

In Alomations, smart mockups render your design onto product photos with real fabric folds, shading and light, so the print looks like part of the shirt. You can preview every colour and every side before the run, and a zoom (framing) control helps when a product was shot from far back and looks small in the frame. The built-in mockup library has ready product photos for the catalog products, so you can list without owning a photo. Read more in smart mockups in Alomations.

For fit shots, the best photo is one where you know the size and the height yourself. On paid plans, your own mockup library lets you upload your own photos, set the print area once and reuse them in every run, and Mockup Preview changes the shirt colour of your own photo live. One photo of someone you know, wearing a sample in a known size, can then carry every new design, with the fit line added to the image before you upload it. Smart mockups count toward Etsy's 20 images, so plan your fit shots into the same set.

Frequently asked questions

Should I state the model's height on a stock mockup?

Only if the mockup's source states it. If you do not know the size or the height, leave the model caption out and rely on a measurement image and a size chart.

Where should the fit line go, on the photo or in the description?

Both. Put it on a later photo, where thumbnail crops will not cut it, and near the top of the description, because some buyers read and others only swipe through photos.

Does a fit image replace a size chart?

No. A model photo shows how one size looks on one body. A chart lets the buyer compare your measurements with a shirt they already own. Use both.

Do fit images help a listing rank in Etsy search?

Etsy does not say that fit photos affect ranking. Its Search Visibility page checks the primary photo, for example that it is clear, well lit and shows one finished product (Etsy: search visibility). Fit images do their work after the click, when the buyer picks a size.
