The baby and toddler mockups that work best on Etsy are a clean flat-lay for the first photo, a gift-style shot that shows the item ready to give, and at least one photo that makes the real size obvious. Baby garments are small, so their prints are small too, and an honest mockup shows the design at the size it will actually print instead of an adult-sized graphic on a newborn bodysuit.
This is for sellers listing baby bodysuits, toddler tees and matching family sets. Baby items are often bought by people with no baby at home: friends heading to a shower, grandparents, colleagues. They have never held a 6-month size, so your photos have to do that for them.
Why baby listings need their own mockups
A tiny garment photographed on its own fills the frame, and in a search thumbnail it looks as big as an adult tee. That is the main trap with baby mockups: nothing in the picture tells the buyer how small the item is, or how small the print is on it.
Model photos are harder too. A photo of a real baby needs the parents' permission and a lot of patience, which is why flat-lays and hand-held shots are the practical choice for most print on demand shops.
A note on words before you write the listing: some everyday product words are also brand names. "Baby bodysuit" is the plain generic term and describes the item exactly, so it is a safe choice for your own titles and tags. If you are unsure whether a word belongs to a brand, use the generic term or check with a qualified professional. Our guide to baby bodysuits as a print on demand product covers the product itself.
The shots that work for baby and toddler items
| Shot | What it shows | Where it goes | Honesty check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat-lay on a plain background | The garment and print, clear in a thumbnail | First photo | Print scaled to the real garment |
| Gift-style flat-lay | The item folded with tissue, a box or a card | Second or third | Props that do not ship are named as props |
| Scale shot | The garment in adult hands or beside an adult piece | Early in the gallery | Nothing that makes it look bigger |
| Size lineup | Several sizes side by side | After the main shots | Each size shows its real print size |
| Print close-up | Lettering, colours and fabric | Middle | No editing that the print cannot match |
| Size chart | Measurements per size | Last | Taken from the blank maker's chart |
A flat-lay first
Etsy's guidance is that "The first photo in a listing should be horizontal (landscape) or square", and that sellers should "Position your image so your subject is clear in all 3 views used across Etsy" (Etsy Help: photo tips, Etsy Help: thumbnails). Etsy's Search Visibility page also checks for a primary photo that shows one finished product rather than a collage, and that is clear and well lit (Etsy Help: search visibility).
For baby items that means one garment, laid flat and centred, with generous space around it on a soft, plain background. Since June 2026 you can preview listing thumbnails before publishing (Etsy Help: recent updates), which is worth doing for small items that can look lost in a big frame. For when a flat-lay beats a model shot, see flat-lay vs model mockups.
Gift-style shots
Show the item the way it will be given: folded with tissue paper, in an open box, next to a card. Keep props simple and generic, and say in the description exactly what is included. A box or a soft toy in the photo that does not ship with the order is how "this isn't what I ordered" messages start, and Etsy Purchase Protection does not cover a case where "The item doesn't match the listing description" (Etsy Help: Purchase Protection).
Showing the real size
Hands in the frame. A bodysuit held by adult hands shows its size at a glance.
Next to an adult piece. A matching parent tee beside the baby bodysuit sells the family set and shows scale in one image.
Print at true size. Ask your provider for the print area of each baby size, and check that the mockup shows the design at that size rather than stretched to fill the chest.
A size lineup. If you offer several sizes, one image with them side by side answers the question before it is asked. Toddler and youth sizes follow their own charts, as our guide to toddler and youth shirts explains.
A size chart last. Use the blank maker's measurements, not a generic chart from another product.
How many photos, and in what order
Etsy's listing guide says you can add "up to 20 photos and 2 videos" to each listing (Etsy Help: creating a listing), with videos of up to 15 seconds. A baby listing rarely needs all 20. A sequence that answers what gift buyers ask is flat-lay, gift shot, scale shot, colour options, print close-up and size chart, with a short video if you have one.
Two technical points save re-uploads. Etsy recommends photos with a width and height of "at least 2000 pixels", and transparent PNG files are not supported for listing photos (Etsy Help: photo tips), so export mockups as JPG or as a PNG without transparency.
What to say in the listing
Your photos and your words should tell the same story. Name the fabric the way the blank maker states it, and leave out claims you cannot back up. If a personalized design shows a sample name in the mockup, say clearly that the buyer's own name replaces it.
Products for babies and young children can come with extra rules depending on where you sell, so check Etsy's help pages or a qualified professional before you list them. Using a mockup before the item is printed is normal as long as it shows what the buyer will receive, which we cover in is it honest to use a mockup before you print the item.
How Alomations builds baby and toddler mockups
The Alomations catalog includes baby, toddler and youth sizes next to adult apparel, and the built-in mockup library has ready product photos for the catalog products, so you can list baby and toddler apparel without photographing it yourself. Smart mockups render your design onto those photos with real fabric folds, shading and light. A background picker covers flat-lay shots, and objects in front of the design, such as a hand, stay in front, which is exactly what a hand-held scale shot needs.
A zoom (framing) control lets a product shot from far back fill more of the image. Use it for clarity in the first photo, and keep one wider shot so the size stays honest. Before the run you can preview every colour and every side, mockups are downloadable, and they count toward Etsy's 20 images. On a paid plan, your own mockup library lets you upload your own flat-lay or gift photos, set the print area once, reuse them in every run and change the garment colour of your own photo live in Mockup Preview. Frequently asked questions
Can I use photos of a real baby in my listing?
Only photos you have the right to use, taken with the parents' permission. For most print on demand listings, a flat-lay or a hand-held shot shows the item well without a model.
How many photos should a baby listing have?
Etsy allows up to 20. A flat-lay, a gift shot, a scale shot, colour options, a close-up and a size chart cover the questions buyers ask, so add more only when they show something new.
Should I write onesie in my title?
The safest choice is "baby bodysuit", the plain generic term that describes the item exactly. If you are unsure whether a product word you want to use is a brand name, choose the generic term or ask a qualified professional.
Do I need a mockup for every size?
Not one per size. A lineup image or a clear scale shot makes the range obvious, and the size chart covers the measurements.
You can make your first baby and toddler mockups on the Alomations free plan, with no card needed.
