Toddler shirts are sized with a number and a T (2T, 3T, 4T and so on), youth shirts with letter sizes marked Y or Youth, and neither group lines up with adult sizes. Because the shirts are smaller, the print area is smaller too, so a kids' listing needs artwork that works at a small scale, a size chart from the blank you actually sell, and wording an adult buyer can follow.
This guide is for print on demand sellers adding kids' sizes to a shop that already sells adult tees. Kids' sizes fit naturally with family, birthday, school and holiday designs. They are also where many "it doesn't fit" messages start, because the person ordering is almost never the person wearing the shirt.
How toddler and youth sizes are labelled
Toddler sizes carry a T after a number. The number is a rough age in years, and the T marks a toddler cut, proportioned for a younger body than a regular kids' size with the same number. Youth sizes are usually letters with a Y in front (YS, YM, YL) or the word Youth on the label, and many brands print an age guide next to each size on their chart.
Treat the age as a starting point, not a promise. Two children of the same age can be two sizes apart, so the measurements on the chart (chest width and body length) are what you want buyers to use. Each blank brand publishes its own chart, and the range of sizes differs by brand and style. Take sizes and measurements from the chart of the blank you sell, not from a generic list.
Kids' sizes do not convert to adult sizes
A youth large is not an adult small, even when two charts look close. Cut, sleeve length and body length differ, and the gap matters most at the top of the youth range, where older kids, teens and petite adults overlap. Do not write "youth XL fits like adult S" unless the blank's own chart shows it.
This is the point to explain most clearly when you sell matching family sets, because parents ordering for a whole family often pick from one dropdown in a hurry. Our guide to family matching shirts from baby to adult shows how to set those listings up.
Smaller shirts, smaller print area
A design sized for an adult chest is too wide for a toddler tee, and providers handle print size across garment sizes in different ways. Even among adult tees, one large provider says "Some smaller product sizes do not support this placement" for its largest front print area (provider print area notes), and another says designs "are not scaled up for sizes larger than L" (provider print area guide). Kids' blanks are smaller again, so the provider's template for each size is the measurement to trust.
Design for the smallest size first:
Keep text large and short. A long quote that reads well across an adult chest turns tiny on a 2T.
Avoid hairline strokes and fine detail, which get lost when artwork is scaled down. Our notes on thin lines and small text show what survives printing.
Keep the layout compact and close to square, so it scales down without crowding the collar or the hem.
Setting up kids' sizes as Etsy variations
On Etsy, sizes are a variation. You can add variations for up to 3 item attributes, such as size, colour and style, and price, quantity and SKU can each vary by option when you switch that on (Etsy variations guide). That lets one listing carry toddler and youth sizes at different prices when the blanks cost different amounts.
Three limits from the same guide are worth knowing before you build a large size grid. Listings with 1 or 2 variation types can have up to 4,900 option combinations. Unique prices, SKUs and quantities are possible for up to 400 combinations. And buyers cannot filter search results by custom variations, so if your sizes are a custom variation, words like toddler and youth belong in your title and tags, not only in the dropdown. For the basics, see what a variation is on Etsy.
In a mixed listing, name each option so it states the group: "Toddler 3T" and "Youth M" leave no room for doubt.
| Size group | How sizes are labelled | What to tell the buyer | Design note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toddler | A number plus T (2T, 3T, 4T) | Measure a shirt that fits now and compare it with the chart | Short text, big letters, simple shapes |
| Youth | Letters marked Y or Youth (YS, YM, YL) | Quote the age guide from the blank's chart and say it is only a guide | Scale down from the adult file and check thin lines |
| Adult unisex | Letters with no prefix (S, M, L) | Say plainly that youth and adult sizes are separate | Full-size artwork |
| Mixed family listing | Group name in every option (Toddler 3T, Youth M, Adult L) | Point to the size chart photo before the dropdown | One design, scaled for each group |
Describing kids' sizing to adult buyers
The buyer is a parent, grandparent, aunt or teacher, often buying a gift and often unsure of the child's size. Write for that person:
Put the size group in the title and in the first sentence of the description. Etsy advises you to "Clearly describe your item in the first sentence of your description" (Etsy SEO guide).
Add a size chart image to your photos, using the blank's own measurements. Our guide to building a size chart for Etsy apparel walks through it.
Explain how to measure: lay a shirt that fits flat, measure across the chest and from shoulder to hem, then compare with the chart.
Say what to do when unsure. If your advice is to size up for a growing child, write it in one plain sentence.
Etsy requires a return policy on physical listings, even one that says no returns or exchanges (Etsy returns guide). For made-to-order items, a clear chart prevents more size problems than any policy can fix afterwards. Children's products can also carry extra safety and labelling rules depending on the country you sell into, so check Etsy's help pages or a qualified professional for your own situation.
How Alomations handles kids' sizes
The Alomations catalog includes women's, youth, toddler and baby sizes next to the adult Gildan, Bella+Canvas and Comfort Colors apparel, so one design can be listed for the whole family from the same workspace. On paid plans you save size and colour sets once as variation profiles and reuse them in every template, so a toddler set and a youth set never have to be rebuilt for a new listing. Templates also let you arrange prices across sizes, and Etsy listing attributes are filled from the product.
When a kids' size sells, the order arrives with the design and the variant matched, so a 3T order reaches production as a 3T. You can send it to a production partner from the orders screen, with the item cost and shipping shown separately before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 4T the same as a kids' size 4?
Not exactly. The T marks a toddler cut, which is proportioned differently from a kids' size with the same number. Use the measurements on the blank's chart rather than the number alone.
Should toddler and youth sizes share one listing?
They can, as long as each option names its group. Use separate listings when a design clearly suits one age group, so the title and tags can be specific.
Can I reuse my adult design file for kids' shirts?
Usually the same artwork can be scaled down, but check text size and thin lines at the smallest size, and shorten long text if it becomes hard to read.
Can buyers filter Etsy search by toddler or youth size?
Not through a custom variation. Etsy's variations guide says buyers cannot filter search results by custom variations, so put words like toddler and youth in your title, tags and description as well.
