Selling print on demand outside the US works when your international rates cover the real shipping cost plus the Etsy fees charged on shipping, and when the listing promises a delivery window you can keep. Buyers abroad are far more patient with a longer wait when they know about it before they pay, and far less patient with silence once they have paid.
This guide is for sellers whose products are printed in the US and who want to open their listings to buyers in Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia and beyond. It matters most before the holidays, when orders from abroad come with a gift date attached and less room for delay.
What changes when an order leaves the US
A domestic parcel travels through one carrier network. An international parcel is usually handed from one carrier to another, clears customs in the destination country and is delivered by a local service. Each hand-off adds time you do not control, and tracking can go quiet between two networks. A return or a reprint has to make the same long trip again.
| Setting | Domestic US order | International order |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping price | Kept low, since it can affect search placement | Set per destination from your production partner's quote |
| Additional item rate | Covers a little extra weight | Price the extra weight honestly |
| Processing time | Business days, Monday to Friday | The same, with longer transit on top |
| Delivery estimate | Fewer hand-offs | Longer, and customs can add time |
| Tracking | Required for US sellers to complete an order | Keep it, it decides protection and Star Seller |
| Returns | Your shop policy | EU orders may need a 14-day minimum |
The domestic price matters for search: Etsy says "US listings with domestic shipping prices lower than $6 will be prioritized in search". That rule names domestic prices, and your international rates sit on their own rows of the same shipping profile. Adding tracking is required to complete an order for US sellers. For the domestic side of the timeline, see how long POD orders take to reach US buyers.
Price international shipping so it does not eat the margin
Start from what your production partner charges to ship to each destination, then account for the fees Etsy takes on shipping:
Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee applies to the order total, and Etsy says it "applies to shipping and gift wrapping (if you charge your customers for those)".
Payment processing fees are taken from the total sale price, including its shipping fees. The rate depends on the country of your bank account, for example 3% + 0.25 USD in the US and 6.5% + 14 TRY in Türkiye.
Calculated shipping is only available to sellers who use USPS or Canada Post, so a POD shop shipping through a partner usually sets a fixed price per destination.
When a buyer orders several items, Etsy's combined shipping uses the most expensive item's "One item" rate plus each other item's "Additional item" rate. Set the additional-item rate abroad with care: a second hoodie adds real weight, and an underpriced rate can turn a large international order into a loss. If your shop is based outside the US, Etsy also lets you set different item prices for domestic orders, US orders and all other countries. Whether to build shipping into the item price is a separate decision, covered in free shipping or charged shipping for POD.
Set delivery expectations buyers believe
Your processing time is "how much time you need to get an order ready to ship", and Etsy counts it in business days, Monday to Friday. Transit comes on top, and abroad it is longer and less predictable. Be generous with the international estimate rather than optimistic.
This matters for protection too. Etsy Purchase Protection covers an order that arrives "7+ days after its estimated delivery date window provided at checkout", when the order meets Etsy's conditions. Those include shipping within your stated processing time with valid tracking and an estimated delivery date on the listing. Valid tracking also decides whether an order counts toward Star Seller.
Then say it in plain words. One line in the description ("Orders outside the US take longer to arrive, and customs can add time") and a short message when the order ships answer many questions before they are asked. For the replies themselves, see replying to where is my order messages.
Returns, the EU 14-day rule and duties
Returns from abroad are expensive for everyone, so write the policy before the first international order arrives. Etsy requires a return policy on physical listings, even one that says no returns, and notes that EU rules "require some sellers to offer a minimum 14-day return policy" on orders shipped to the EU. How that applies to personalized or made-to-order items is worth reading on Etsy's help pages for your own shop. For a misprint or damage claim from far away, a replacement sent to the buyer is often simpler than asking for the original back. Our guide to returns and exchanges for print on demand items covers the policy wording.
Destination countries may charge import taxes or duties when a parcel arrives. Who pays and how depends on the country and the shipping method, so check Etsy's help pages or a qualified professional for what applies to your shop.
Which countries to open first
You do not have to ship everywhere at once. You choose the destinations in your shipping profile, and one profile can be reused across many listings, as Etsy's shipping profile guide explains. A sensible path is to add a few destinations, watch what those orders really cost and how long they take, then add more. Our guide to Etsy shipping profiles for POD products walks through the setup.
Language is less of a barrier than it looks. Etsy translates listings automatically, and a manual translation overrides the automatic one when you want to control the wording for an important market.
How Alomations handles the shipping side
Templates hold the shipping side of a listing. When you build one, you choose the shipping, return and processing profiles along with the product, sizes and prices. Set your international rates once in the Etsy shipping profile, attach that profile to the template, and every listing made from the template carries the same rates. If you change a profile in Etsy, "Refresh from Etsy" brings the change into Alomations, and the bulk Etsy-profile editor sets profiles on many templates at once.
On the orders screen, Etsy orders arrive resolved, with the design and variant already matched. When you fulfill through a production partner, the item cost and the shipping are shown separately before you pay from your balance, so you can compare what shipping cost you with what the buyer paid. The partner cannot mark an order shipped without a tracking number, and tracking is posted back to Etsy where Etsy allows it. Production for US orders is in the US, and you can also print and ship any order yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Should I offer free international shipping?
Only if the item price absorbs it. Etsy's transaction and processing fees apply to the whole order, so free shipping moves the cost into the price rather than removing it. A common middle ground is to charge for international shipping and keep domestic shipping low.
Can I sell to some countries and not others?
Yes. You choose the destinations in your shipping profile. Start with a few and add more as you learn what those orders really cost.
What if an international order is late?
Reply quickly with the tracking status and a realistic update. If the order passes its estimated delivery window, Etsy Purchase Protection may cover it if the order meets Etsy's conditions, such as having shipped on time with valid tracking.
Do I need tracking on international orders?
Keep it. Valid tracking counts toward Star Seller and Etsy Purchase Protection, and it gives you something concrete to share when a buyer asks.
