Performance polos and tees sell to buyers who need several matching shirts at once: sports teams, clubs, small businesses and event crews. To sell them as print on demand on Etsy, build listings around the requests these buyers bring (a logo, names, mixed sizes and a date) and set clear rules for proofs and deadlines before the first order arrives.
This guide is for POD sellers who already sell personal shirts and want to take on team and business orders. A performance polo POD listing works differently from a single gift tee: one buyer orders many shirts, and a mistake in a name, a size or a logo repeats on every one of them.
Who buys performance polos and tees
Sports teams and coaches, from youth leagues to adult recreational teams.
Running, cycling and walking clubs that wear one club shirt to events.
Gyms and fitness instructors who want branded tees for staff or clients.
Small businesses dressing staff in a logo polo: cafés, cleaning crews, salons, contractors.
Event and volunteer crews for tournaments, charity runs and festivals.
Company outings and golf days, where a logo polo doubles as a keepsake.
What they share: they buy for a group, they care about a deadline, and they often bring their own artwork. Performance fabric, usually a light, quick-drying polyester or polyester blend, suits active days and long shifts, and a polo looks more formal than a tee for staff who meet customers.
The custom requests they bring
Their own logo. Etsy's personalization tools include a file upload field. You can add one upload field per listing, and "Buyers can upload up to 10 files, with a maximum size of 100 MB per file", as .jpg, .png, .svg, .heic or .pdf (Etsy Help).
Names and numbers. A text box field takes a character limit you set between 1 and 1024, and a listing can have up to 5 personalization fields in total (Etsy Help).
Mixed sizes in one order. A team rarely wears one size.
A hard date. Game day, opening day or the event itself.
Brand colours. Screens and fabric never match perfectly, so set expectations early.
A proof. Buyers want to see the logo placement before many shirts are printed.
One rule sits above all of these: print only logos and names the buyer owns or has permission to use. A professional team's crest or a sportswear brand's mark belongs to someone else, and rights owners can report listings to Etsy. When a report complies with Etsy's policies, Etsy removes the reported content (Etsy Help).
Matching each buyer to a listing setup
| Buyer | Typical request | Listing setup that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Youth or amateur sports team | Team name, player names and numbers, mixed sizes | Size and colour variations, a required text box for names and numbers |
| Running or cycling club | One club design, an event date | Size variation, an optional text box for the date |
| Small business | Logo on the left chest, staff names | A file upload field for the logo, an optional text box for names |
| Gym or fitness coach | Brand logo on training tees | Logo upload, colour variation limited to the brand's colours |
| Company outing or golf day | Polos with a logo and the event name | Polo or tee as a style variation, a text box for the event name |
Etsy now allows "up to three distinct variations, like size, color, and style" (Etsy's 2026 updates), which is what lets the last row live in a single listing.
Print method on performance fabric
DTF "can print on cotton, polyester, nylon, and blends alike", while DTG "needs 100% cotton or high-cotton garments" and is "not recommended for nylon or polyester" (Printify). Sublimation "requires polyester or another synthetic material" (Printify Help), and "The color white can't be printed on all-over print products" (Printful Help).
Our catalog apparel is printed with DTF, and one trade-off matters for active wear. Printful says a DTF print "has a plastic feel and might be slightly stiff initially", and "The breathability for these prints is relatively low" (Printful Help). On a shirt made to breathe, we would favour a left-chest logo plus a back print over a large solid block on the front. Our guide to small chest logos and pocket prints covers sizing.
Care matters too: a DTF print "might develop small cracks if the garment is washed in hot water" (Printful Help). Team kits get washed often, so put washing instructions in the description. More on this in print durability on polyester and blend fabrics.
How to list them for teams and businesses
Title. Etsy says "Clearly describe your item at the beginning of the item title" (Etsy Help). Lead with what it is and who it is for, within the 140-character limit, and leave out any team or brand you do not own.
Variations. Size, colour and style cover most group orders. You can set unique prices, SKUs and quantities for up to 400 option combinations (Etsy Help), so larger sizes can cost more.
Personalization fields. Make the names field required on a team listing and optional on a business one. Add-on pricing works only on optional text fields, between $0.20 and $500 USD equivalent (Etsy Help), so on a listing where the name field is optional, you can charge for a name on the back.
Description. Etsy's advice: "A person should be able to read the first sentence and know exactly what you're selling" (Etsy Help). Then cover fabric, print method, care, and how proofs and deadlines work.
Processing time. Set it honestly. Processing times can be set per listing or per variation, and you can extend a ship-by date once, before it passes, by up to 21 days after confirming with the buyer (Etsy Help).
Large or unusual orders. Move them to a custom order with a private listing, which costs $0.20 per private listing (Etsy's fee page). Our guides to handling custom order requests and managing a large group order cover the conversation and the logistics.
Production partner. If a production partner prints your orders, you must disclose that partner in your relevant listings (Etsy's listing guide).
How Alomations handles team and business orders
The Alomations catalog includes performance polos and tees alongside Gildan, Bella+Canvas and Comfort Colors apparel, with "from" prices for each product on the catalog page and shipping quoted separately. Apparel is printed with DTF, and production for US orders is in the US. Personalizable designs add an editable field, such as a name or a date, so the listing reaches Etsy with personalization switched on and the buyer's text is placed when the order arrives. For logo polos, a smart mockup's front view can carry its own chest-logo spot.
Orders arrive resolved, with the design and variant matched and the buyer's personalization text and photos attached, and custom orders have their own screen. You fulfil through production partners from the orders screen: item cost and shipping are shown separately before you pay from your balance, and a partner cannot mark an order shipped without a tracking number, which is posted back to Etsy where Etsy allows it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I print a team's or a company's logo for them?
Yes, when it is their own logo or they have permission to use it. Never print professional team or brand logos you have no rights to.
Which print method suits polyester performance shirts?
DTF prints on polyester and blends, DTG is not recommended for polyester, and sublimation needs polyester or another synthetic material. Our catalog apparel uses DTF.
How do I collect names and sizes for a whole team?
A required text box (up to 1024 characters) lets the buyer list each name with its size. For a large or mixed order, agree the details by message and send a private listing.
Do I need to disclose a production partner on these listings?
Yes. Etsy requires sellers who work with a production partner to disclose that partner in the relevant listings (Etsy Help).
