Name shirt colours in the words a buyer would use, and keep the manufacturer's name in brackets only where it helps, for example "Heather Grey (Sport Grey)". A colour option a shopper cannot picture is one they will not choose, and a name that does not match the photo invites a disappointed message after delivery.
This guide is for sellers who copy shirt color names straight from a blank's spec sheet. Those lists are written for printers and wholesale buyers who know the catalogue. Etsy shoppers pick from a dropdown in everyday language, often on a phone, and they decide in seconds.
Why manufacturer colour names confuse buyers
The names describe a catalogue, not what the buyer sees. On the Gildan 5000, Ash, Sport Grey, Dark Heather and Graphite Heather are all greys of different depth and texture. Listed side by side as brand names, they give a shopper no idea which is light and which is dark.
Some colour names hide a different fabric. Gildan's US spec sheet describes the 5000 as "5.3-ounce, 100% US cotton", but Ash is 99/1 cotton/polyester, Sport Grey and the Antique colours are 90/10, and heathers such as Dark Heather and Graphite Heather are 50/50 cotton/polyester. On the Gildan 64000, many heathers are 65/35 polyester/ring spun cotton. A colour name is therefore also a fabric claim, which matters when your description says "100% cotton". Our guide to describing fabric and fit accurately covers that side.
The same name on two brands is not the same shade. Ash appears on both the Gildan 5000 and the Bella+Canvas 3001, and each brand dyes its own fabric. If you sell both blanks, check each colour against its own photo rather than assuming they match.
Garment-dyed colours vary by nature. The Comfort Colors 1717 sheet asks buyers to "allow for slight color variation in production and washing". A plain name plus a short note in the description sets the right expectation. Our article on heather, garment-dyed and solid colours explains how each type prints.
How to name colours so buyers understand them
Lead with the plain colour family: Grey, Navy, Green, Red, Beige.
Add a texture word when it is true. "Heather" tells the buyer the fabric has a mixed, textured look, which a flat swatch may not show.
Keep the brand name in brackets where it helps. It lets you, your production partner and a returning buyer know exactly which blank colour was ordered.
Never use the same plain name twice in one listing. Two options that both read "Grey" leave the buyer guessing. Make them "Light Grey" and "Dark Heather Grey".
Skip invented poetic names. "Midnight Dream" means nothing to someone choosing in a dropdown.
Use the same name for the same colour in every listing, so a buyer who bought one shirt can find the match in another.
| Manufacturer name | A name buyers understand | Fabric note from the spec sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Ash (Gildan 5000) | Ash Grey (very light grey) | 99/1 cotton/polyester |
| Sport Grey (Gildan 5000) | Heather Grey (Sport Grey) | 90/10 cotton/polyester |
| Dark Heather (Gildan 5000) | Dark Heather Grey | 50/50 cotton/polyester |
| Graphite Heather (Gildan 5000) | Graphite Heather Grey | 50/50 cotton/polyester |
| Heather Oatmeal (Gildan 64000) | Oatmeal Heather (light beige) | 99/1 cotton/polyester |
| Heather Navy (Gildan 64000) | Heather Navy | 65/35 polyester/ring spun cotton |
| Garment-dyed colours (Comfort Colors 1717) | Plain colour name, with a variation note in the description | Slight colour variation expected |
The descriptive words in brackets are suggestions. Check each one against the brand's colour card or a sample before you rename a colour in your shop.
Making colour words searchable
Variation names are for choosing, not for being found. Etsy states that buyers cannot filter search results by custom variations. If a colour is part of what people search for, such as a sage green shirt or a pink sweatshirt for a gift, the colour word has to appear in the title or the tags as well.
With up to 13 tags of up to 20 characters each, a tag spent on a colour should be a colour people actually look for, not a brand name like "graphite heather". Where your category offers colour attributes, set them to the plain colour of the item in the main photo, since Etsy recommends filling out both attributes and tags.
Photos need to agree with the names. If a listing has more than 20 colour options, you can only add photos for 20 of them, which is one more reason to offer a focused set. Our guide on which shirt colours to offer on Etsy helps you choose that set.
Selling in English from outside the US
If your shop language is English, write colour names in English even when you think of them in another language. Etsy machine-translates listings automatically, and categories and attributes are translated too, but your own text is where every translation starts. A brand name such as Graphite Heather has no everyday meaning to carry across, so the plain colour word next to it does the work for a buyer reading in another language.
How variation profiles keep colour names consistent
In Alomations, a variation profile is a set of sizes and colours saved once and reused in every template. You decide the buyer-friendly name for each blank colour one time, and every listing built from that profile uses the same words, which ends the "Grey" in one listing and "Sport Grey" in the next. Our article on variation profiles shows how to set one up.
Templates then carry the profile into each listing run along with prices, SKUs and shipping, and Mockup Preview shows the design on every colour before the run. When an order comes in, it arrives resolved with the design and variant matched, so the colour the buyer chose maps straight back to the right blank. Saved variation profiles open on the paid plans, and the catalog lists the blanks and colours you can build them from.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use the manufacturer's colour name or my own?
Use both where it helps: a plain name first, with the manufacturer's name in brackets. The plain name helps the buyer choose, and the brand name helps you and your production partner pick the right blank.
Can buyers search for the colour in my variation options?
Etsy says buyers cannot filter search results by custom variations. Put the colour words people search for in your title or tags, and keep the variation names for choosing.
Why does the same colour look different on two shirt brands?
Each brand dyes its own fabric, and blends take dye differently from 100% cotton. Name and photograph each blank's colours separately instead of sharing one list across brands.
Can the colour name change the fabric I should describe?
Yes. On some blanks, such as the Gildan 5000 and 64000, heather and some other colours use a cotton/polyester blend while the solid colours are 100% cotton, so check the spec sheet before your description promises one fabric for every colour.
Save your sizes and colours once and build listings from them, starting on the free plan, from the Alomations pricing page.
